  1. One hit in this inning (only one ball out of the infield in fact) and that's the one that hit square into a glove.
  2. DW became the first man to strikeout to left field.
  3. What's that candy commercial that asks: 'Not going anywhere for a while?' -- well that's what this game is like.
  4. James Dyson is the inventor/executive of his eponymously-named vacuum cleaner company. I never said it was a GOOD joke.
  5. Hah, Dyson sucks (see what I did there?)

I wasn't even really thinking of him for short until I saw a few of his throws, both on DPs where he wasn't in the best throwing position. But yea, you would have to think he's lacking something. HIs turns have been fine, but those are much shorter throws than the 'in the hole' ones that SSs have to make.
  7. Zvon wrote: Any particular reason that Herrera isn't part of the shortstop discussion? Generally SS is a position that young players, as they age and progress, move away from rather than towards, so if minor league coaches, scouts, managers thought he could play SS then he most likely would have played SS. And yet he barely ever did, leading us to believe that there's something, probably the arm, that he's lacking.
  8. Benjamin Grimm wrote: If you gave me a billion guesses, I couldn't have told you that Bo Porter was the manager of the Houston Astros. Very anonymous first-time manager on a team both at a low point in its history (3 consecutive 105+ loss seasons) and during the first span in history where they don't play the Mets (we actually get that division this year but theirs in the final series of the year). Also was pretty anonymous during his playing career (brief stints with 3 different AL clubs) to the point where I think most NYM fans would have trouble picking him out of a one-man lineup. This is really only notable in it being the lone managerial firing of the year.
  9. Well this game certainly took a turn for the better rather quickly, in part due to some questionable Marlin throwing decisions.
  10. Six teams have the day off today. Suxxx to be them -- or, more accurately, fans of them ... I'm sure the players don't mind.
  11. Been a long time since this thread surfaced, something which is generally good news for dugout bosses. But it does surface today wight eh news that the Astros have fired Bo Porter as manager alone with bench coach Dave Trembley. Timing seems a bit odd, but I'm sure there are reasons not obvious to distant observers. Organization man Tom Lawless gets to lay down the law (wait, can a guy named Lawless even do that?) for the rest of the season. Houston says it will start a search for the permanent replacement immediately.
  12. Yeah, but he's grown some since.
  13. New York CF Juan Lagares has at least one hit in seven of his past nine contests. I'll take 'Totally Silly Stats' for $600, Alex
  14. I'm not suggesting that it was the ideal move to let this hypothetical leak out to the press--although that any player (and particularly a catcher) is subject to being shifted around the diamond at some point in his career shouldn't exactly come as a shock to him--it's that this is merely an idea at this point, one which is a long way from being tried much less implemented that we run the risk of getting ahead of ourselves here.
  15. And a .88 WHiP!! Only caveat is that most of that occurred in A-ball
  16. TheOldMole wrote: Why are we so sure d'Arnaud would handle a position transition like Hundley or Piazza and not like Biggio or Berra? Not sure at all. At the moment this remains nothing more than a thought that Terry floated among the coaches with the futuristic idea that if this Plawecki guy turns out to be as good as hoped, THEN WHAT? Terry even said that he hadn't even brought up the subject w/d'Arnaud since you'd want to be in an instructional league type of situation before even trying it.
  17. May be up as the needed 3rd LHR but not someone they're fretting about protecting this winter. Already 25 y/o (26 by OD 2015) and spent a majority of the year in Savannah. Orignally a refugee of the Philly system Also apparently didn't pitch anywhere from 2010-2012 IOW, an arm, not a prospect.
  18. Mejia has to earn his keep with this one: Rollins, Utley, Howard, Brown due up.
  19. Ryan Howard and young Dilson standing over there next to each other on 1st look like a bear and its cub.
  20. Eveland's the last lefty standing out there as he's outlasted Rice, Lannan, and, at least temporarily, Edgin who appears to be at least temporarily unavailable. Sounds maybe like an early September call-up for Johnny Leathersich.
  21. Good Eveland! [fimg=300]http://www.nyfa.edu/student-resources/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Alfred-Hitchcock.jpg[/fimg]
  22. Gwreck wrote: Dillon, you've just been given a three run lead. The Phillies have Freddy freakin Galvis leading off the next inning. You cannot walk him on four pitches. Yeah Dillon, it's Galvis, son ... Fred Galvis, son.
  23. Not that we need a GS here, but in order to get back into a game like this we will need more than single runs here or there. That said, this would really be a nice spot for Grandy to get back into things.
  24. Keith not being able to accurately remember the details of his ML debut (40 years ago today) is a perfect example of unreliability of player memories even about themselves. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN197408300.shtml His recall of the date was wrong, the sequence of his ABs were off, even the pitcher off whom he had his first hit was incorrect (and marked that way on his souvenir ball). oe: although a reading of the box score shows that Keith was right about the pitcher and Gary (or whoever was feeding him his info) was wrong.
