  1. Well that's that...
  2. Mets Hot Stove Report is on SNY ,Peterson and Darling raving about Perez...Peterson saying being a pitching coach is like working at the United Nations...must be able to deal with all types of guys.....Perez looks a lot better in blue and orange than the black and gold....Ron got a few words in....
  3. Bill Madden had an interesting article in the News yesterday...I know I was shocked too....in talking about bullpen management Madden has these numbers.... ] Before the era of specialization - or "Creeping La Russa-ism" as we like to call it - managers seldom got caught up in matchups. If their starting pitchers tired while holding a lead, the call usually went to one primary bullpen source - a Goose Gossage, Bruce Sutter, Sparky Lyle or Dan Quisenberry - who would usually finish up the game no matter how many innings it required. But even when Tony La Russa started reducing the games to seven innings with his lefty-righty eighth-inning setup men and Dennis Eckersley for the close, it wasn't nearly as complex as it's become with managers routinely starting up their pens in the sixth inning. Last year, Randolph used his bullpen to get 1,628 outs, according to statistics from the Elias Sports Bureau. This, in contrast to the 1,561 outs Art Howe needed from the pen in 2004, the year before Randolph took over as Mets manager, or the 1,340 outs Bobby Valentine got from his relievers in 2000 when he took the Mets to the World Series. Indeed, as complete games go the way of the Sunday afternoon doubleheader, outs in a season recorded by relievers have increased by more than 5,000 over the last 10 years (see chart). http://www.nydailynews.com/01-28-2007/sports/baseball/story/492584p-414929c.html
  4. metirish wrote: and what has lying about fighting in Vietnam got to do with coaching the Blue Jays? ="Edgy DC"] Quite a bit when Johnson was using combat stories to motivate his players and it all turned out to be crap. It was a pretty sad story. The lie took on a life of its own and it was almost as if he had come to believe it himself. The team, for what it's worth, didn't fire him immediately. He came back to start the season but a few weeks into spring training they got the notion that he had lost the team. Oh,Ok,that explains that....has he been out of the game since I wonder.
  5. Well if we are to believe what the baseball people are saying in that article then the interview process was not nearly as bad as some make it out for Willie.....and what has lying about fighting in Vietnam got to do with coaching the Blue Jays?
  6. Shep Messing in the booth with Gary and Keith pumping the Red Bulls would be cool.
  7. ] Bulls running from MSG? Are the Red Bulls about to bolt MSG Network? Spies say Red Bulls brass has already engaged in "serious conversations" with SportsNet New York honchos to explore the possibility of jumping to the TV home of the Mets. If the Red Bulls do exit MSG, it would put a further hole in the network's summer programming, unless, of course, MSG is considering using replays of this scintillating Knicks season to revive its summer schedule. Anyway, why would the Red Bulls want to leave MSG? There probably are a few reasons. One likely is promotion. On SNY, the Red Bulls could count on receiving major hype during Mets telecasts. This would provide the Red Bulls with more traction than having upcoming games and telecasts promoted on reruns of MSG's "50 Greatest Moments" series. Then there's SNY's comprehensive sports news operation, which the Red Bulls would also benefit from. If the Bulls split, they would not be the first franchise to cross over to SNY. Of course, the Mets did it when SNY was created. The latest MSG defection came when Lou DiBella took his "Broadway Boxing" series to SNY. makes perfect sence for Red Bull....MSG is shot.
  8. I've only known Jack Lang from hearing and reading about him, when I think about sportswriters I imagine he had a great love for it and that there are probably not any left like him, maybe Vic Ziegel and Jerry Izenberg, maybe I just have a romantic view of what sportswriters were and are not anymore....

  20. The money breakdown.... ]Randolph and the Mets agreed in principle yesterday to a three-year, $5.65-million extension, three people familiar with the situation confirmed. The extension will kick in immediately -- Randolph's $700,000 contract for 2007 was torn up -- and run through 2009, with a team option for 2010. The 52-year-old will earn $1.4 million this season, $2 million in 2008 and $2.25 million in 2009. The 2010 team option is for $2.5 million.
