G-Fafif Apr 13 2009 08:36 AM Matter raised in my e-mail group that I have to admit didn't occur to me all weekend: somebody should have slid hard or come inside to send a message/retaliate for last September, the way they celebrated on our field and such, and in general for taking such glee in eliminating us. I can't imagine this bunch of Mets doing anything like that, from the manager down to the stars, the starting pitchers, anybody save maybe for a cranky reliever or two but then you're worried about protecting a lead. I instinctively approve all Met retaliation, proactive or otherwise, but my gut tells me you beat teams by outplaying them. Any thoughts? TransMonk Apr 13 2009 08:39 AM I ate the shit out of some fish fry on Friday thinking of the end of last season the whole time. I hoped they learned their lesson. John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 13 2009 08:46 AM Yes, they should outplay them. Which sort of supports my denouncing of Jerry's passive approach to, you know, scoring enough runs to defeat them. The more I think about it the madder I get. Sixth inning, new releif pitcher in, and he gives up a home run and single. Do we keep the music playing? No, we purposefully make an out to set up... Castillo? With a chance only to tie it? And when he makes an out, not on purpose, they can sidestep Sheff. Stupid Jerry. And did the Mets inappropriately over-celebrate?[/quote:jat6uws2] Spirit-breaking was the event in '04. Don't recall an overwhelming celebration. Hope Diaz is seeing something for his trademark. Listen, you win and you can do what you want. This is the franchise that perfected the curtain call and created the Festival of the Handshake. The Marlins made a big deal of eliminating the Mets a second time? Don't let 'em do that: the winning, that is. I didn't notice the excessive celebration until the "GET OFF THE FIELD!" chant started. It's sad when the fans have to show the indignation for the team, I suppose, but I'd prefer the Mets show their teeth as they cross the plate. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Apr 13 2009 08:51 AM ="John Cougar Lunchbucket":uyqcgzju] So in summary, I'm actually pretty satisfied with most of our team but strongly disagree with the way Jerry wussed us out of Friday's game.[/quote:uyqcgzju] More or less with you, Lunchpail... Speaking of wussing out, is it me, or has Jerry gone a little Willie on us with the bullpen usage? Between playing righty-lefty with Stokes and Feliciano, sticking to one-and-done inning limits for guys like Parnell or Stokes (even in long-man/mop-up situations), and 23 (!) appearances in 6 games, I'm mildly disturbed. (The fact that this comes after a springtime of this-is-a-changed-bullpen and pitchers-who-can-pitch-to-everybody happy talk deepens that disturbance a touch.) ="G-Fafif":uyqcgzju]I instinctively approve all Met retaliation, proactive or otherwise, but my gut tells me you beat teams by outplaying them. Edgy DC Apr 13 2009 08:52 AM Even the book says not to play for a tie on the road. More conservative than the book is pretty conservative. Home Opener IGT - San Diego Padres @ New York Mets
metirish replied to metirish's topic in Archived Game Threads
As long as Murphy tries his best it's OK. -
The question was asked , who would do it. I left it out there until I could wait no more. I have stepped up to the plate as it were to deliver what I hope to be a winning IGT. Has ever a Home Opener been more anticipated? , yes of course it has but tonight we Christen a new park( don't say stadium because Jeff doesn't want that) Santana will not be there as his wife is preggers and birth will be induced today in Florida. Seaver says he is more excited about this first pitch than the first pitch to close Shea. Mr. Seaver says he hopes he can throw it the 60 feet six inches and that it's a strike. I find it a bit sad to hear him talk like that.

Simple answer is that they paid for it. MLB, as most sports (except for The Masters) do, lets TV dictate the terms and FOX is going to voluntarily give up the NYC market for their expensive game right after politicians start voluntarily giving up votes and campaign contributions. The Marlins, meanwhile, aren't televising that game locally at all so it's not like they care that SNY is blocked out for the first 55 minutes. G-Fafif Apr 10 2009 03:31 PM It's Miami at 6 PM. I remember reading this earlier in the week. Isn't their local contract to a regional FSN affiliate-- what gives for skipping a Saturday telecast? Answers = Yes and I don't know (I don't think there's a Heat conflict). But not all teams televise every game (we New Yorkers have long been a bit spoiled on this topic) and Saturday nights are traditionally the worst TV slot of the week. Maybe they think it boosts weekend attendance to shun TV every once in a while. btw, first pitch in now scheduled for 6:25 so, at most, TV will miss 2 innings (and, at the rate these early games have been played, maybe less than 1) bmfc1 Apr 11 2009 08:19 AM Locals cable channels (but not over-the-air channels) can show the local teams. However, the broadcasts cannot begin after 1 PM eastern and before 7 eastern as FOX has exclusive TV rights to baseball during those hours. EI and mlb.tv cannot show any game that starts during the above hours, even if it is on FOX but not available locally (so tonight's game isn't on the EI schedule). The rules differ for EI and mlb.tv for 1 starts (I don't know why). As a result, as a Mets fan in the DC area: if the Mets have a 1 PM Saturday game, it is on mlb.tv but not EI. If the game starts after 1 and before 7, it is not available in either venue. (One year, the Mets had a Saturday DH against SF. The second game started after the FOX game finished but before 7 so it wasn't available outside of NY and SF.) If the Mets are on a FOX game but it is not shown in DC, it is not available on EI or mlb.tv (as if I'm going to say "hey, the Mets aren't on but the Orioles are so at least I have baseball). The blackout rules are overlybroad and unfair. E.g., EI and mlb.tv subscribers in Las Vegas are blacked out from 6 different teams broadcasts. This has been talked about for years and Selig talks about fixing it but never does. Maybe with today's absurdity, something will be done (although I wish it happened to a MFY broadcast). Angels Pitcher Nick Adenhart Was Killed Last Night
metirish replied to bmfc1's topic in New York Mets Talk
I had forgotten that O'Day and Rodriguez knew Andenhardt. O'day said he had spoken to him to congratulate him on making the team. Lupica today . With Nick Adenhart's death, Joba Chamberlain gets look at tragedy from the other side ] This time the gifted young baseball pitcher wasn't the drunk driver, the way Joba Chamberlain was. This time the young pitcher, Nick Adenhart of the Angels, fresh off six scoreless innings against the A's, a kid with everything ahead of him the way it is supposed to be ahead of Chamberlain, was the victim of an alleged drunk driver. This is how it happens with drunk driving when the policeman doesn't pull you over in time. So Nick Adenhart is dead at the age of 22. The police said the man who caused the accident, another 22-year-old named Andrew Gallo, somebody with another DUI on his record already, driving with a suspended license, was under the influence of alcohol when his mini-van ran a red light a few hours after Nick Adenhart made his fourth major league start. Sometimes these stories end up with the kind of pictures we saw of Joba Chamberlain, the police video showing Chamberlain trying to walk a straight line and trying to make conversation with the officer who pulled him over, about Yogi Berra and everything else. He told the officer he was a New York Yankee. Adenhart was a Los Angeles Angel, who had fought back so hard from injury and once again made himself a young guy to watch, a young guy good enough to get a start the first week of the season. "He wasn't an extreme talent," his agent, Scott Boras, said at an emotional press conference Thursday in Anaheim, Boras sitting there between Angels manager Mike Scioscia and general manager Tony Reagins. "He fought to get here." Tony Reagins talked about the young man's poise and said, "He had a lot of energy, but he didn't show it." Adenhart was a passenger in the car and two others were killed, so this isn't just a story about a young athlete dying too soon. This is about all who die in this senseless way. This story about drinking and driving that never changes no matter how the night ends: The drunk behind the wheel always having the potential to be the most dangerous guy in the world. This wasn't the way it ended for Joba on Highway 77, south of Lincoln, Neb., driving his BMW with an open bottle of whiskey next to him near the intersection of Old Cheney Rd., going 71 in a 55 mph zone. Maybe now, after a $400 fine and nine months' probation and the loss of his driver's license for 60 days - this after some court dates got postponed around his spring training schedule - Chamberlain fully realizes how truly lucky he really was last October. What Joba Chamberlain knows for sure is that the pictures of himself on the front pages of the New York papers and in that video are nothing compared to the ones from Fullerton, what was left of the car in which Nick Adenhart was riding before Gallo ran that red light, before Gallo's mini-van went crashing into that silver Mitsubishi, before he was booked on suspicion of murder, felony DUI and felony vehicular manslaughter. Here is what most baseball fans don't know about Adenhart if they're not fans of the Angels. He came out of Williamsport High School in Silver Spring, Md. Five years ago, everybody thought he was going to be a high pick in the draft, because he was one of those kids with a big arm. But then right before the draft, he suffered a bad elbow injury, one of those injuries that would require reconstructive surgery. The Angels stayed with him, though, selecting him in the 14th round. The kid was thinking about having Tommy John surgery and going off to pitch for the University of North Carolina when he had recovered, make himself into a prospect for somebody else all over again. It turned into a wonderful story from there, because of the team's belief in the kid and his trust in the team. The Angels convinced him to sign with them, for a $700,000 bonus, and do his rehab under the care of their doctors and trainers. He did. That is the fight that Scott Boras talked about Thursday when he was there with Scioscia and Reagins to talk about Nick Adenhart's death at Orangethorpe and Lemon in Fullerton. He made his first start with the Angels last May, and then there were some injuries to Angels starters this spring and there was Adenhart against the A's on Wednesday night. Six scoreless innings. No decision. His lifetime record in the big leagues stayed at 1-0. He was with some friends after that. They wanted to go dancing after the game. Four of them in the Mitsubishi, Gallo and a passenger in the red mini-van. Then Adenhart wasn't a baseball pitcher with possibilities, with a future, he was another victim of drunk-driving in America. The way it is alleged that the man Donte Stallworth of the Browns struck and killed on MacArthur Causeway in Miami was a victim of drunk-driving. And Jim Leyritz, an old Yankee World Series home run hero, is in jail awaiting trial because he has been accused of DUI manslaughter. Joba isn't the only young athlete who ever got himself over the legal limit for alcohol and thought he was just perfect to drive home. Or to the next bar. But now he knows for sure where the trip can end when it doesn't end off to the side of Highway 77 in Lincoln. One kind of ending for him, one kind of ending for Nick Adenhart, as sad an ending as we could ever know about in April, which is supposed to be about beginnings in baseball. -

At least Livan is durable and predictable...which will make him easier to watch for me than Perez and Maine. Well, we could have done with fewer LOB, but the bats showed up. The bullpen has been OK. yes, it would have been nice for O'Day to get out of that inning today, and for them to not make a 9-4 game into a white-knuckler. But I'll take 2 outta 3 on the road anytime, anywhere. John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 09 2009 02:59 PM I'm not unhappy with the outcomes -- 2 of 3 is the best you could expect -- I'm just struck by the fact that the Reds when all is said and done might have the worst O in the NL and put up 17 runs in these last two games, off a variety of arms. Yuck! DocTee Apr 09 2009 03:02 PM ]Wait'll we face an opponent with a good lineup. This weekend's opponent, for example. OlerudOwned Apr 09 2009 03:18 PM Man, everyone is really ripping on Cincy's lineup. Votto and Bruce are blooming big time mashers, Phillips and Ramon Hernandez are two of the better offensive players at their respective positions. Encarnacion has some serious pop and Hairston was a pretty useful player last season. They're certainly no all-star team, but they ain't a bunch of sniffles either. I'm going to reserve any panic about Perez for a few weeks, while muttering curses on the WBC under my breath. metsguyinmichigan Apr 09 2009 05:14 PM No complaints from me. I'll take two of every three just fine. It was an early getaway day game after a long night. Ollie did what Ollie does. He'll probably get out first no-hitter then give up eight runs in his next start. Cincy is a better club than people give it credit for. Farmer Ted Apr 09 2009 05:26 PM On pace for 106 wins. smg58 Apr 09 2009 05:28 PM I'm betting the Mets aren't the only team Joey Votto goes to town on this season. Without making a detailed assessment, I'd take the Reds lineup ahead of Houston's, San Diego's, Washington's, and Pittsburgh's. Maybe Colorado's as well since Holliday is gone. Number 6 Apr 09 2009 10:39 PM I'd take it over San Fran, as well. Now we're at almost half the teams in the NL. Edgy DC Apr 10 2009 07:08 AM I'm calling a tie with Atlanta also, depending on who you think is the abler rookie --- Jordan Schafer or Chris Dickerson. John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 10 2009 08:42 AM Geez. I've been on the Joey Votto Bandwagon from Day 1. But the fact remains the Reds had a below average O last year and are coming back without their best offensive player in Dunn. The point of course, wasn't to quantify the Reds' bad O but highlight the Mets' poor pitching. The amount of hits and walks they Mets surrendered these guys might have looked far worse had we been matched against, say, Philly or Chicago. That's all I was saying. batmagadanleadoff Apr 10 2009 08:51 AM The '86 Mets, with Sid and Aguilera as their back of the rotation starters, lost to every singe team during the regular season. The following teams have three quality starts: Pittsburgh, San Diego, Los Angeles Angels and Kansas City. The Mets, through three games, have none. None of the Mets starters got through the sixth inning in Cincinnati. Considering the team won two of three there, that is not the end of the world. But the early stumbles of Mike Pelfrey and Oliver Perez have forced Jerry Manuel to use more of his bullpen than he would like, and the Mets relievers pitched 11 innings against the Reds.
