  1. With Matz and Lugo now likely to miss larger amounts of time, the rotation depth we had a few weeks ago has taken a hit. That puts more pressure on Harvey and Wheeler to be good and healthy out of the gate.

  4. I liked Walker much better last year at $10.5M than this year at $17M+. I still like him and think he'll be fine as part of the whole...as long as he (and everyone else) stays healthy.
  5. The wife and I will be in NYC June 12th-16th so we will be attending the 06/15/17 game vs. the Washington Nationals at Citi Field. I also picked up a ticket to sit with the 7 Line Army in Seattle on 07/29/17 when the Mariners host the Mets. Planning on (but haven't bought tickets for) a couple of games when the Mets visit Milwaukee and Chicago this year as well.
  6. My patience for Harvey will be much shorter than last year. Especially with Lugo, Gsellman and hopefully (eventually) Wheeler all in the mix.
  7. Edgy MD wrote: Harvey's workday ends with four runs (two earned) in three and a third. Box score sez he had 2 errors, which I'm assuming means he helped out his ERA with his own crappy fielding.
  8. It looks like LWFS's team has been re-assigned...I'm guessing to an interloper. GULP!
  9. I'm flexible that whole week and don't mind moving if we have to.
  10. I would counter that all professional athletes are not duct-tape-40-ounce-bottles-to-your-hand, fang-mouthpiece-wearing, butt-crack-thumbs-up-giving douchebags.

  13. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I can see the ERA being around 3.00, but I think deGrom will have too many five- or six-inning starts for him to win 17 games. 14 is probably more likely. Agreed. deGrom seems to be one of those guys who just hits a wall at 100 pitches. He can battle through any jam he is in at that point, but is no longer as dominant or reliable after that threshold.

What Dad drank, what he smoked, what aftershave he wore. Spot on. I think I've purchased about 5 used copies of this one...and I don't know where any of them are. It's a book I buy nearly every time I see it at a thrift store or used book shop.

  19. Overall, you're right about Gsellman having more upside now...if he puts up a 3.50 ERA over a full season, I'll be ecstatic. Still, I had no problem with Wheeler's development pre-injury. He did waste pitches after getting ahead, but he had better stuff (and stats) than Pelfrey over each of their first 49 starts.
  20. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: It's not like this was a guy who ever had it all together before a serious injury, surgery and a poor recovery from surgery. What is anyone expecting? Dude had a 3.50 ERA in 49 starts with 8.5 K/9. I would at worst label his pre-injury career as "average" and there was certainly room for him to grow, but I don't remember thinking he was below expectations based on his youth and experience. The fortune we have had with deGrom/Syndergaard/Harvey/Matz all being really good (better than Wheeler) very early in their careers may have altered the expectations, though. If he was being counted on the the ace or even the number two, I would agree that he was definitely not that guy yet pre-injury, but I'd be thrilled to have those stats from a fifth starter. I do think having missed two years makes it less likely that he will reach the ceiling we all thought he had back in 2013-14, but I haven't given up on him being valuable yet.

  22. I feel like the MLB is just fine without slow-pitch softball rules.
