  1. Jerry let K-Rod pitch the 10th because he thought that K-Rod would be credited with the win and the save.
  2. One more Marv. He appears at the 4:27 mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-8vIeyKa3U

George Brett belted his pine tar incident home run with a T-85 Hillerich & Bradsby bat: the Marv Throneberry model. I suppose this is fitting: if I had to write up that home run as a work of believable fiction, I'd have hapless Marv hit it. 5. Nope on Swoboda, Boyer, Ashburn and Cleon. Kingman didn't play for the Mets during the '60's, so Kong can't be it. (Though I realize that I gave the '60's hint after Kingman was guessed.)
  6. I'll post the answer at the start of today's game, if this riddle isn't solved by then. More hints: 1) I'm neither confirming nor denying that the Met also played for the Mets in the '70's. All I said was that he played for the Mets during the '60's. 2) The player was not exclusively a Met, but he is associated with the Mets, more than with any other team.

  8. Here's another hint. The player we're looking for played for the Mets in the '60's.
  9. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Tommy Davis? No. Not Tommy Davis. The following tidbit isn't much of hint, but in 1983 George Brett was the only major leaguer to regularly use the "Name of one-time Met" model bat.
  10. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: George Brett The bat had George Brett's named "inscrbed" (is that the right word? -- engraved?) on it. But the specs were from a bat used by a one-time Met. The bat company referred to that model by the name of the one time Met that is the answer to this trivia question.

  12. All wrong answers. Here's a hint: We're looking for a player who was once a Met.
  13. What player model baseball bat did George Brett use to hit the controversial 1983 pine tar home run?
  14. How about Eddie Murray (93) and Steve Henderson (77)?
  15. Cleon did it in '71, although he shared the HR lead (14) with a few other Mets. Does that disqualify him?
  16. It's more than a little odd that NO ex-players showed, though. And Jeter apaprently can't take a shit in the morning without hearing his Sheppard introduction, but... well... ? Off Topic trivia: Who is the only Met player to have attended Casey Stengel's funeral? Rod Kanehl? Yes. The Hot Rod. Good, logical guess if, as your question mark implies, you weren't entirely sure of the answer. I had a vague recollection of having read it when Hot Rod passed. As it happens, YES aired its Caseyography last night with a good chunk devoted to his Mets days and his end -- he rose from his hospital bed and stood when he heard the national anthem prior to the Dodger game he had on the radio. Told his nurse it would probably be the last time he'd do it. And he died the next day. Somehow YES didn't edit this to have Steinbrenner buy Stengel the hospital or send him to college. SNY would've edited it by splicing in a game winning Matt Franco pinch hit single in the ninth. I was always aware of the "so called fact" that Kanehl was the only Met player that attended Stengel's funeral. But after giving this some thought today, I think it's implausible that Yogi Berra did not attend Casey's funeral. I wonder if Yogi's one week stint as a Met player was overlooked. Stengel died on 9/29/75 --- the Mets fired Berra in August of that year. Therefore, Berra's managerial duties would not have prevented him from attending because Yogi no longer had any. I'll ask Yogi the next time I see him.

  18. Cora's batting eighth, where he more or less belongs. (I'd bat Cora fourteenth, but that's just me.) This move is wholly undermined by leading with Tejada. Also, Wilpon's managers --especially Manager Small Balls-- tend to think that the second and eighth spots in the batting order are interchangeable and can be filled by the same batter.

  21. I suppose that between the crap happy Cora batting second and Lincecum pitching for SF, Jerry's gonna bunt every chance he gets. Wilpon's managers think that whether or not a one run lead is likely to hold up for eight innings has everything to do with how tough the opposing pitcher is.
