  1. Mets' lingering mystery: Why did Buck Showalter have to be fired? | Klapisch https://www.nj.com/mets/2023/11/mets-lingering-mystery-why-did-buck-showalter-have-to-be-fired-klapisch.htmlhttps://www.nj.com/mets/2023/11/mets-lingering-mystery-why-did-buck-showalter-have-to-be-fired-klapisch.html Bob Klapisch raised an interesting point earlier this week: Showalter was supposedly axed because David Stearns wanted his "own man", presumably Craig Counsell. But the Mets missed out on Counsell. So why was Buck fired before the Mets were sure they'd land Counsell? And was Carlos Mendoza also one of Stearns's "own men" all along? Lotsa ways to speculate on this one. Also, the Astros forfeited their first and second round draft picks in two consecutive drafts as part of the punishment for their role in the sign-stealing cheating scandal.
  3. Like the Mets W-L record under Randolph? If the Mets won x games with that jackass managing, they would've won more than x games with an average manager. The Mets won despite Randolph, not because of him. Also, one can make the reasonably plausible case that no Mets manager inherited a better squad out of the box than Randolph.
  4. Willie Randolph: worst fucking manager the Mets ever had and I fucking loathed him from about his first week on the job until the day he was finally fucking fired. Good fucking riddance. Inherited the best middle of the order in all of baseball and all he wanted to do was bunt his way onto the scoreboard. In the first inning. Of every fucking game. With a leadoff hitter that was the fastest player in all of baseball and with the best 3-4-5 in the game. Randolph did the dumbest thing I ever saw a manager do in all of my life of watching baseball games. In mile-high Denver, against the Rockies (natch!) where you should assume, before you even make out the fucking lineup card, that you're gonna need about eight runs to win a game, because it's fucking Denver, that fucking jackass sac bunted Jose Reyes from second base to third base. In the first inning! With Reyes having reached second base leading off the game. The fastest runner in the game. So fast that Reyes was the likeliest runner in all of baseball to score from second base without the ball leaving the infield. So now, the jackass has to hope that his awesome 3-4-5 middle of the order of Beltran, Wright and Delgado doesn't hit a homer. Because if they homer, he's made to look like a jackass, which he was, for wasting an out given that Reyes woulda scored anyway without having to give away an out on account of the homer. Not that the jackass had the capacity to work this all out in his head and figure out what he hadda hope for so as not to look like a jackass. Because he was a jackass playing one run baseball in the first inning of a game being played in Denver. Fucking Denver! In the first inning. The highest scoring inning of all of them. Because your best hitters come to bat in the first inning. Because you craft your lineup for the first inning and you know who's coming to bat. When the Mets won the division in 2006, I went into semi-depression, knowing that this idiot would get undeserving credit for the feat and that it would take at least another year and a half to ax him. Willie Randolph inherited a Ferrari of a baseball team and he put training wheels on it. Where the hell is VicSage to chime in with some Wee Willie Small Balls snark?
  5. Casey Stengel had the best managerial run in baseball history managing the Yankees and then the worst ever as the Mets manager. Not that Stengel's Mets stint should be judged based on his on-the-field accomplishments. Same for Joe Torre: one of the best managerial runs ever as Yankee manager and a dreadful run as manager of the Mets. Some Yankee taint.
  6. I went with Happy Rails. Happy is such a happy word that it makes me happy. It's so uplifting!
  7. How far does your rationality extend? ... how long would you allow him to emerge from game after game without a W before you'd throw your hand up and cry "I don't care what makes sense, or follows reason, or is logical. The guy needs to be out of the rotation! He's killing us!!" Or are you so wedded to rationality that you'd allow this to go on indefinitely before you'd reach that conclusion? i mean, i'm not an idiot, so... yeah... i don't think i'd ever reach that conclusion. What mm said: No, because I'm not a goddamned idiot. Here's a few more: 1) deGrom's too damn dominant and we're behind. Maybe if deGrom purposely gave up a few gopher balls, our hitters would perk up. 2) It's Buck's fault. He once managed the Yankees. 3) Where's our offense? Where the hell is Ostrosser?
  8. Edgy MD wrote: You are retrofitting your logic to suit your conclusion, so much so that you had to be reminded that Joe Torre managed the Yankees after the Mets. It's moronic. So much taint managing for an org that hasn't had a losing season in more than three decades. /rollseyes
  9. As what? As a second baseman? Or as a manager? Hope it's the former and not the latter.
  10. What was Jerry Grote's lifetime Mets batting average on the morning of September 8, 1972? No idea. Go look it up for us, and if I give a fuck I will let you know. I couldn't give a flying fuck about the moronic things that you give a flying fuck about. Edgy MD wrote: Then please don't comment on them. If Ostrosser is allowed to post about not giving a flying fuck, then so can I. Please stop bullying me by red-lighting my posts. I can't fight back on that level. And you red-light me whimsically and arbitrarily, for personal reasons more than anything else. If you wanna shut me up, please do it fairly, and in a manner that might even garner my respect. I have an enormous amount of respect for intelligent arguments, even those that go against me. Don't just make shit up. I can't comment but he can?
  11. Yeah, sure. Whatever. That makes sense. Hating the Orioles because of Don Buford and Frank Robinson. And Davey Johnson, too, I suppose. Whatever. Ostrosser.

  13. Edgy MD wrote: Isn't the aversion to Boras kind of past its due date? Of course it is. Especially here. If the Mets wanna trade Alonso because they think the team will be competitively better off making the trade rather than keeping Alonso, well that's understandable. But trading Alonso because Bora's his agent? Why? Because the Mets might have to pay Alonso $10M or $15M more than the closest other bidder? They're gonna have to do that no matter who Alonso's agent is. I mean $10M or $15M to Cohen, who's worth 15 billion dollars and doesn't even need most of his money? Because how many cars can a person own? He can only drive one of them at a time. Assuming Cohen even drives himself around these days. What's he gonna do with all that extra money? Have three lunches a day and then four dinners at four different four-star restaurants every single evening? Ten or fifteen million dollars to a guy who's a billionaire 15 times over? And who probably has a better chance of doubling his net worth than some regular guy who's worth $75K, given how capitalism works? If Boras can elicit higher offers for the same free agent compared to other player agents, then he's doing a terrific job and every free agent should sign with Boras.

  21. =smg58 post_id=138706 time=1696276487 user_id=62] Like Eppler, Showalter had plusses and minuses and you can't credit him for last season while giving him a pass on this year. The Mets have done quite a bit worse in the recent past, but they can also do better and hopefully they will.

  23. =kcmets post_id=138744 time=1696361628 user_id=53] Has anyone heard anything more on the 'outcome?' BBRdotcom still has it as suspended and resume on October 2nd.
  24. Gary Carter from Heaven: "God told me that I should be the Mets next manager and that I should tell youse all. Why doesn't God himself tell youse? Because he works in mysterious ways." What is the point of the continual Gary Carter thing? God, heaven and mysterious ways? What is your point? Spell it out. Since you asked: I'm channeling Gary Carter openly campaigning for Willie Randolph's managerial gig while Randolph was still the Mets manager. Before the body was even dead, so to speak. I guess those are the classy intangibles that Carter brings to the table that are supposed to warrant the permanent retirement of Carter's Mets number, he of the two very good Mets seasons, two very crappy seasons, and one godawful vomit-inducing season. Heaven because Carter's dead, and being the goody two-shoes that he was, he's undoubtedly in Heaven right now, so his message has to emanate from Heaven. Mysterious ways because that's the argument advanced by those Mets fans that campaign for his Mets uni number to be retired. They can't put up a credible case based on Carter's Mets on-the-field record so they come up with this vague, ambiguous nebulous idea that his value extends beyond stats. Which you could say about any great Met. But we're supposed to believe that Carter's intangibles are so vast, that these mysterious ways intangibles, all by themselves, warrant the retirement of his Mets uni #. We've been through this plenty. Just this week, by one poster who claims intangilbles but won't explain just what they are. And a few years ago by the poster who would gladly turn over this country to a dictatorship. He wrote that Carter's value extended beyond his stats but couldn't explain one molecule of what that value was -- not that it stopped him from basing his whole case on those mysterious intangibles. It's like cornering some devout fanatic against the wall with all of the infinite absurdities and stuff irreconcilable with known science that one would have to accept to believe that the universe is controlled by a magic invisible man floating in the sky and they respond by telling you that you know who works in mysterious ways. When you hear that, your bullshit meter should be redlining. And you should cover your wallet. And because I can't help myself. Happy? Anything else you want me to explain? I'd be happy to.
