  2. Remember when he beat the Mets in LA with an extra-inning walkoff? That was the game that Jason Bay played in even though his face and head crashed into the outfield wall the day before.
  3. Whaddya expect? He's always killed the Mets. If the Mets miss the post-season by one game this season, guess who'll have been all over it?
  4. I can't believe this isn't being televised in NYC. If it is, you need a top secret decoder ring which I ain't got to figure out on which freakin' channel this is on.
  5. Familia's ERA goes from 2.01 to 3.47.
  6. I wonder if David Wright took a page from last season's new Daniel Murphy playbook? When Wright sees a pitch that he thinks he can handle, he tries to annihilate it, instead of just hitting it. It's consistent with the BP piece FK linked to above.
  7. Eureka! Mets have identified mechanical flaw in Matt Harvey By Mike Puma May 27, 2016 | 8:43pm Matt Harvey was back in the laboratory Friday searching for the perfect form. Instead of throwing a bullpen session, the scuffling Mets right-hander — for the second time in less than a week — held a between-starts workout on the field, with a batter standing in the box. The purpose, according to manager Terry Collins, was to correct a flaw in Harvey’s mechanics that team officials have spotted during recent games. “We’re seeing some things in certain situations when the hitters are in there that he’s doing mechanically that we’ve got to get fixed,” Collins said before the Mets faced the Dodgers. “Therefore we wanted hitters in there, even though it’s tough to simulate a regular game, but at least when you’ve got a hitter in the batter’s box, [Harvey] is looking at things a little differently.” Harvey, who is 3-7 with a 6.08 ERA, is scheduled to pitch at Citi Field on Monday. In his start against the Nationals on Tuesday, Harvey allowed three home runs and was removed after the fifth inning. The middle innings have doomed Harvey this season — opponents are batting .413 against him after the third inning. The Mets have ruled out the possibility Harvey is tipping his pitches. “There’s things going on the second time through the order that he’s doing, and I’m not going to get into them,” Collins said. “We’re seeing stuff he’s doing on the mound that it’s not giving away, but it’s keeping him from having the ability to make the pitches he needs to make. We’re seeing the velocity drop, and there’s a reason for that. We’re seeing lack of command for his breaking ball.” http://nypost.com/2016/05/27/mets-have-identified-mechanical-flaw-in-matt-harvey/

This is what I kinda thought was going on. If Wright is making less overall contact -- and he undoubtedly is -- but hitting the ball harder, then he's likely being more selective. Probably with pitches at and near the edges of the plate that he recognizes that he can no longer hit -- at least not as good as he used to. On those pitches, he's just letting them go by, hoping to get the ball instead of strike call. If this is an accurate explanation of what's going on with Wright, then i don't think that he'll be able to sustain his current level of effectiveness -- I'd expect more decline, probably in-season. The reason being that pitchers that haven't yet figured out Wright's new vulnerabilities will find out soon enough and then those pitches at the edges that Wright can't handle will suddenly appear more and more so right over the fat part of the plate where Wright won't be able to take them and hope for a ball call. I hope I'm wrong.
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think they're making many many of these cards. Not just "historic" moments, but anything that any fan anywhere might consider special. So they're exploiting fans of all 30 teams. A few years ago, Upper Deck came out with "Documentary" sets for a few select big market teams, including the Mets. Each team set consisted of 162 cards, one for each game of the season -- the goal being to "document" each game played by the carded team. The back of the cards had a summary of the game depicted by the particular card. [fimg=266]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2008/Upper-Deck-Documentary/772/Jose-Reyes.jpg?id=fcce5647-6fcd-4ca5-9096-c99e6dd20230&size=zoom&side=back[/fimg] It was an ambitious set that, I thought, lacked execution. The photos on the card fronts were random and didn't correspond to the game in question. Also, the images repeated: I'd say that only about a dozen images were used to fill the entire 162 Met set. [fimg=255]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2008/Upper-Deck-Documentary/775/Pedro-Martinez.jpg?id=54f9db78-3bb5-42ec-a517-e1527ce26233&size=zoom[/fimg] [fimg=255]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2008/Upper-Deck-Documentary/175/Pedro-Martinez.jpg?id=34107d79-25b7-4228-96f5-2529bed0676c&size=zoom[/fimg] Overall, I'd say that the set was a disappointment, because of the photographs.
  18. Didn't MLB enact a rule recently about how much time the batter has to step into the batter's box? And is MLB they actually enforcing that rule? 'Cause that's how you shorten a game without having to remove elements that many fans would like kept in. Just watch an old game; the pitches come in one on the heels of the last one. Today, a pitch is made and then the batter steps out of the box and you could practically listen to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida the whole long version before the batter steps in for the next pitch.

In other words, very few hitters in baseball are consistently hitting it harder. He isn't hitting it harder when he strikes out 50 times in 42 games. It's even worse than that. It's the Mets that played 42 games. Wright -- 33 games.
  23. Wright's base on balls rate is off the charts this season. He's on pace to draw 100 walks while playing only 75% of the season. I have mixed feelings about that -- and it's not because I have anything against the walk -- I don't -- I absolutely love it. I just think that this development might be further evidence of Wright's decline. Especially when his walk rate is considered in tandem with his increased strikeout rate. His whiff rates are also off the charts. He's on pace to fan almost 200 times this season -- again, obviously, in only 75% of the season. I think these numbers demonstrate what we can all see with our own eyes -- that his ability to simply make contact with pitches has markedly diminished between last season and this one. We can speculate as to whether this will be the new norm or whether this is something fixable or even just random.

Had he been just a tad slower catching up to it, it would've gone into the gap for a double. Yeah, and if he swung a lot harder without compromising his ability to hit the ball, he woulda drove it 550 feet to left center field. Also, Wright would probably have about 45 HR's by now if he was better than Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds combined. And three or four complete game shutouts.
