I just couldn't help myself. I read through the quiz and all of the right answers came to me instantly and so I had to post all the answers all at once. Actually, Pat Tabler took about a minute. I knew who the damn guy was right away but my brain had some trouble retrieving his name from my memory. At first, I kept coming up with Pat Tillerson like the cabinet guy, and then Pat Keebler like the cookie elves. But eventually, Tabler came to me. Luis Rivera I never would've gotten except that the other day, I pulled out some of my Mets baseball cards to look at. I've been neglecting my collection and so I haven't looked at my Mets cards in years and the last time I even bought some was in 2013 -- and just a couple. But I pulled out a book that had mid 90s Mets cards and there was Luis Rivera -- a couple of them. No way would Rivera get a card today unless it was his rookie year but years ago, there were big sets here and there and so a guy like Rivera has a Mets card.

It's Mejia. I knew instantly that Mejia hadn't pitched in the majors since 2015, and it's likely obvious to you now that I bring it up. But it took a while to register that Mejia fit the bill - that he had been around that long and exclusively with the Mets. But Mejia was initially, Jerry Manuel's failed experiment in the bullpen in 2010.
  7. Sometimes, smart people say the dumbest things. So guess which Mets reliever suddenly made my shit list big time right after I read the last few posts in this thread?

  9. d'Kong76 wrote: The real bandwagoners for me (and my age) are the ones who jumped ship in high school for Mr. October and Billy Martin's run. I remember a lot of friends wandering the halls with sprained-ankle limps they got jumping ship so abruptly. Of course, the other group (and it's a gigantic group) are the 'big baseball fans' sect that bought Yankee hats around 1997 and rode that wagon for seemingly like a freakin' decade. I have a friend like that. A Mets fan his whole life and then he went MFY around '96. The really disturbing thing about him is that he now denies that he was ever a Mets fan.

I have no memory of that season at all, but I know I was on board in 1970. I remember my father pointing to a story in the paper, with mug shots of a couple of Pirates (ugly bastards), and asking me if I was worried about the Pirates catching the Mets. I said "Nah." Don't think of yourself as bandwagonjumpers. Like me, you are children of '69. If you were bandwagon'rs you'd have jumped off at some point. Even when I "turned my back" on the team in '77 I stayed on board, although from a distance. The bandwagon "type" could never stick with this team from 1970 til now. It wasn't just 1969 that grabbed me. The whole Cinderella story with the teams history was also a big part of it. You just wanted to give the Mets a great big hug. I did that in 1970 and haven't stopped. I do believe that my '73 NLCS experience (gms 3,4,5) really provided the glue that made me stick to this team forevermore. A Metsfanfriend read the game three story on the cardblogthing and sent me some photos that I had never seen before. This was when play was stopped to remove the Reds players families from the make-shift box section along third. That was so bizarre. And I do believe that's me. Neat pic! Did you go to the game with Gene Shalit?

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Yeah, that surprised me too. People voting based on the sidebar and whether it was good news or bad news for the Yankees struck me as bizarre. Agree. 13. I don't know how much say the individual teams have over the design of those ST caps. For the last several years, MLB has been supervising the design of the ST caps, implementing universal themes to be shared by all teams.

I don't get all jingoistic about the results or anything, but it adds a small element of fun that's missing from typical run-of-the-mill ST. To me, the WBC is slightly less interesting than spring training. And to give you an idea of how disinterested I am about spring training, I doubt that I saw even half an inning of spring training last year.
  16. You think the likely 25 man opening day roster includes Nimmo but not Conforto? Did the Mets signal this?
  17. I think this is crazy talk. And then Mattingly agreed that the Marlins would "lay down" for the following game? And who negotiated that agreement? Colon? Terry Collins? Jeff Wilpon? As if the Mets thought splitting two games would've been a good thing at that point of the season.
  18. My strongest James Loney memory is when he beat the Mets with a walk-off extra inning HR as a Dodger. It was the same series, maybe even the same game, that Jason Bay banged his head against the outfield wall and sustained his first Mets concussion.
  19. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I have no memory of Hef homering in his 1st Mets start. The date Edgy gave was actually the day after Hef's game. We lost that one to Philly despite the unusualness of Doodoo hitting 2 home runs -- both off lefties (Cliff Lee & Raul Valdes) Yeah, I ignored the wrong date. I had no idea what the date was. But I just knew that Hef homered in that game. After I saw that youtube video, I realized that I remembered Hef's HR pretty much just the way it happened -- that shot to left at Citi Field.
  20. I thought #5 was the easiest and most obvious question/answer. I can't believe it's still on the board. He hit a HR. (39 second mark) [youtube:14kzxfrx]FdPOliahcSQ[/youtube:14kzxfrx]
  21. dinosaur jesus wrote: Lucas Duda is probably my favorite current Met. I love the guy. I can't say I believe in him, because I don't think he quite believes in himself, which is the problem. But he has the gift, if that's what it is, of being much better than people realize. I'm drawn to players like that. (Wayne Garrett. Olerud.) And I think he's got at least one terrific season in him. He's also hilarious. He's a big, goofy guy with a funny name who seems embarrassed about being a (relatively) famous athlete. Just the idea of Lucas Duda is funny somehow, which is the point of those Instagram photos that Granderson posts. And the writer of this piece is on to that too. He's not mocking him. It's really a kind of tribute, a way of saying that he gets Lucas Duda, and he hopes he's not the only one. I can really relate to this post. I think I root for Duda to improve his game more so than for any other Met. Plus, he's so lovable. Also, Garrett and Olerud are two of my all-time favorite Mets, ranking much higher on my imaginary and somewhat vague list than their skills merit. Although Olerud was one of the best Mets ever, now that I think of it. With Garrett, it was definitely the OBP thing, which I figured out and was totally onto since I was in Junior High School some 40 years ago thanks to obsessively playing solitaire Strat-O-Matic.
  22. This, coincidentally, came up last week, on the last page of this quiz thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25075&p=678440#p678440 Me and at least Rockin Doc didn't know what Vanis Takee meant. Now we have the origin story as well, which wasn't provided in the quiz thread. Other CPF slang decoded on that last page in that quiz thread ---- "avi".
  23. These newfangled defensive metrics [crossout:2akm90iq]might've[/crossout:2akm90iq] probably cost Daniel Murphy the MVP award.
  24. The Braves will pay Bartolo $12.5M for the 2017 season. Has a 44 year old pitcher ever received that much MLB contract money before? I don't know for sure, but I'd say no.
  25. Atlanta Braves schedule Bartolo Colon bobblehead giveaway for game against Mets. This triggers Noah Syndergaard's inner Liam Neeson. http://tomahawktake.com/2017/01/08/atlanta-braves-just-unintentionally-intentionally-start-war/
