  1. Of course the Wilpons did all of that to Sandy. They didnt even want him in the first place. MLB foisted Sandy upon the Mets, an organization that moves billions with an "s" dollars in and out every year yet was once forced to borrow $25K from the league to keep its lights on. as many teams do, especially ones with frozen assets. Because that's so common, it happens almost every day. /rolls eyes The Mets having to borrow $25K to keep its lights on is the equivalent of you having to panhandle a dollar, pennies at a time, for a diner cup of coffee.

  3. Syndergaard's starting to remind me a little bit of Nolan Ryan. Thor's not struggling as much as Ryan did early in his career but I'm starting to wonder if Syndergaard's ever gonna have that dominant unhittable season or seasons that everyone was sure he would've had already, and if he ever does have those seasons, whether they'll happen in a Mets uniform.

Here's another Strawberry cover from before the start of the '84 season. This cover was not included in the cover derby. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47959168727_a163b47fd1_b.jpg>
  6. Lunchbucket's got a Bill Buckner avatar.
  7. =MFS62 post_id=11243 time=1558997516 user_id=60] I'll guess something off the wall - Koufax against Spahn. Later
  8. =G-Fafif post_id=11245 time=1558997925 user_id=55]Spahn-Drysdale?

  10. The startiing pitchers for tonight's Mets game, Jake deGrom and Clay Kershaw are both Cy Young award winners. Who were the starting pitchers the first time a Mets game pitted two former Cy Young award winners against each other?
  11. Buckner beat out Keith Hernandez for the NL 1980 batting crown by three points, depriving Keith of a second straight batting title.
  12. Edgy MD wrote: Buckner was also an outstanding fielder, at least for the first half of his career. He played the cutoff like a quarterback. He was to the cutoff play what Keith Hernandez was to the sacrifice bunt. Of course, he would never win a Gold Glove, because he was not Keith Hernandez. That's odd because my first serious memories of Buckner came from playing the 1971 Strat-O-Matic set (for many years) and from that set at least, I remember Buckner as a pretty good hitter though not much of a home run threat who, defensively, was a jack of all trades who played several positions, none too well.
  13. RIP. Jeez, he was like a part of the Mets family.
  14. If it's Memorial Day, they must be playing a doubleheader today.

  16. =G-Fafif post_id=11095 time=1558812801 user_id=55] I wasn't looking at the gap between first and last games together, rather the gap between appearances together. Hodges and Staub played together on September 28, 1975, and next on April 19, 1981. That's about 820 games. As for longest stretch between first and last games together (as measured in regular-season Mets games), it's likely Reyes/Wright, with Seaver/Jorgensen close behind. Though the years are similar (slightly past middle of 2004 to end of 2018 vs. late 1968 to June 1983), Jose and David might have the edge because of no games lost to strike or even rain.
  17. What about Ron Hodges and Rusty Staub (6/13/73-9/30/84)? Staub appeared in Hodges's first and last major league games, which were all as a Met. Close? Top three? If I wasn't so lazy, I'd calculate the games myself being that I already know the dates.
  18. About halfway through the game -- 5 homers and 13 strikeouts. This is your new baseball.

  20. I think the Mays thing is just a function of age. If you were there, it's special to you. I wasn't. So I can't figure out why watching a washed up Mays play out his last days would be anything special. Maybe for converted Giants fans? To each his own, but we're voting on covers, not on Mays's Mets batting average. And the Mays cover is fabulous. Mays captured in a broad smile. A natural, sincere honest to goodness smile evoking sheer happiness. Not one of those phony smile for the camera smiles. The Mets uniform wordmark dominates the lower half of the cover. And the headline: "The Amaysing Mets" is brilliant. So brilliant, that no sub-heading (e.g., "Willie Mays of the Mets") is needed because the headline tells you everything you need to know -- and with just three words. This is a crisp cover that conveys its message instantly with minimal effort.
  21. http://www.iheartradio.ca/image/policy:1.2539120:1492090904/Geena-Davis-in-A-League-of-their-Own.jpg?w=534&$p$w=9609138> I can out-hit Wilson Ramos. And she's a Davis. So stick her in left field if you prefer the both of them in the lineup.
  22. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=10918 time=1558629350 user_id=68] For as far back as I've been reading him, Prince has been writing the most heartfelt, most moving pieces on Willie Mays the Met that I've ever come across. I don't agree that Mays's Met uniform number should be retired -- officially or unofficially -- but I can recall reading a very persuasive Prince piece on the topic years ago that definitely moved my needle in the direction of retirement, even if it didn't convince me altogether.
