Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Francisco Lindor
batmagadanleadoff replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
Whatever Lindor does won't be enough for a good chunk of Mets fans unless he wins the triple crown. I predict Lindor won't disappoint me. Is there any other team going into 2021 with a better middle infield combo, at least on paper, than the Mets duo of McNeil and Lindor? -
Jeez, I swear I read that Baltimore had been selected to host the ASG after it had been pulled from Atlanta.
-
Baltimore had previously hosted the ASG in 1958 and in 1993. The team with the longest gap between hosting ASG's is the NY Mets, 49 years (1964-2013).
-
Edgy MD wrote: Well, there are real people living there, and so I suggested using the game as a carrot to unscrew voters. Whatch'a doin' this Summer? The 2021 ASG moves to Baltimore. Where it belongs: in a blue state.

Edgy MD wrote: Well, there are real people living there, and so I suggested using the game as a carrot to unscrew voters. There's real people in Georgia, too. Tony Evers is the only thing or person standing in the way of Wisconsin following Georgia's lead. If not for Evers ....

Edgy MD wrote: Well, the best way to make sure the salute to Aaron has some substance may be to move it to Milwaukee, where Aaron played 14 of his 23 seasons and was a key player in the hard fight for integrated housing in the city. Not that there aren't voter suppression measures on the agenda in Wisconsin, but not having yet passed, maybe the game can be used as a carrot to dissuade such legislation. Fuck Wisconsin and their scumbag state legislature. They do everything bad in that state. US Supreme Court sanctioned voter suppression. Extreme gerrymandering. Lame-duck kneecapping of the incoming Dem Governor. Screwing voters during the most dangerous months of the covid pandemic. Scott Walker for two terms. And MLB did its part but that's not nearly enough. Nothing is enough until Georgia repeals its new voter laws. Coke and Home Depot and Delta should be boycotted massively until Georgia's vile new law(s) is/are totally repealed. Those giant Georgia-based companies are playing politics, threading the needle, trying to satisfy everybody. After it's too late do they finally make public statements condemning the laws. There are even reports that Delta worked with the Georgia legislature in passing those bills.

For the statistical-minded, this is gonna cost deGrom at least one start.

Nobody peek! Mike Trout is the highest paid MLB'er for the 2021 season, making between $37M and $38M. Who's the second highest paid MLB'er for 2021? (I did not know this until I just looked it up. --- Hint: It's not Mookie Betts). Time's up, youse sleepyheads! It's Jake deGrom, the Met, clocking in at $36,000,000.00 for 2021.* That makes Jake the highest paid NL'er for 2021. Wouldn't have guessed Jake if I had about 10 guesses. *Tied with Gerrit Cole

Now I'm stumped! Who's Mr. Pine Tar?

He's worth about $15 billion. You could steal $100M from Cohen and he wouldn't even notice without scrutinizing his statements. He can buy anything he wants. Jeez. $30M a year for Lindor to Cohen is like pizza pie money to me and you. Oh, and Cohen can sign Lindor and bemoan letting Bauer get away all at the same time, which was my original main point a little while ago in the Bauer Douchebag thread. Walk. And chew gum. And walk. And chew gum. -

I wonder what the Mets off-season would've been like had the Wilpons managed to hold on to the team for another season? And who here'd be still sticking up for the Wilpons? -

Steve Cohen bummed over Mets' Trevor Bauer miss By Ken Davidoff If the Mets can cross the finish line with Francisco Lindor on a $300-million-plus extension, the shortstop will become the first nine-figure player commitment of the Steve Cohen Era. Yet if the Mets' new owner had his way, that milestone already would be reached…with Trevor Bauer. In a question-and-answer session with Mets radiocaster Wayne Randazzo published Monday, Cohen expressed his surprise and disappointment that the team didn't land the 2020 National League Cy Young Award winner in free agency. “Obviously we wanted to get Bauer and we made a heck of a bid,” Cohen said. “I thought we had him.” The Post's Joel Sherman first reported that the Mets believed they would land Bauer after offering him $105 million over three years. However, the Southern California native went to his hometown Dodgers for $102 million over three years. The Dodgers deal, like the Mets' package, features opt-outs after both 2021 and 2022. https://nypost.com/2021/03/30/steve-cohen-bummed-over-mets-trevor-bauer-miss/https://nypost.com/2021/03/30/steve-cohen-bummed-over-mets-trevor-bauer-miss/ -

Edgy MD wrote: If you thinky about it, the well timed period of excellence of Denver Public Schools is probably the best stroke of luck the Mets have had since the Seaver lottery. Would the Mets have selected David Wright first over Aaron Heilman if they didn't have a compensation sandwich pick that year? I have no idea. Maybe the Mets had Wright higher up on their board --- but they drafted Wright second only because they thought that Wright would, likely, still be available. Just spitballin'. -
Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Francisco Lindor
batmagadanleadoff replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
Could Francisco Lindor be the Best All-Around Mets Player Ever? - The New York Times Hernandez and Strawberry. Reyes and Wright. Lindor? Francisco Lindor hasn't committed to the Mets beyond this season, but he has the talent and track record to match up with the best all-around players in franchise history. Excerpt: In six seasons with Cleveland, Francisco Lindor showcased a multifaceted set of skills that, packaged underneath an irrepressible passion and an enchanting smile, combined to make him one of the most exciting, charismatic and winning players in baseball. Beginning Thursday, Lindor will put that total package on display for the Mets, with a chance to do something even more profound. Given his age, talent and apparent dedication to the sport, and provided he eventually signs with the club long term, Lindor, 27, has a chance to become the best all-around position player the Mets have ever had. “He could exceed them all,” said Bobby Valentine, who since 1977 has played, coached, managed and been a television analyst for the Mets. “His toolbox has the best set of tools, I think, of anyone who has ever played for the Mets.” Mike Piazza hit the ball farther and had a better batting average, but was not a top-notch defender or runner. Carlos Beltran was the best free-agent signing in franchise history, but he broke down some after his first four years with the team. Darryl Strawberry hit the ball to the moon, and had the speed to steal bases, but he was less consistent at the plate and could not match Lindor's defense. Jose Reyes had the speed and the smile, David Wright put up some top-tier years and Keith Hernandez had an undeniable all-around impact on the 1986 championship team. [***] Ron Darling, the former Mets pitcher turned broadcaster, said Hernandez was the best he ever played with. Hernandez's rare combination of offensive and defensive skills, plus his unparalleled knowledge of the game, instincts, performance in clutch situations and his standing as an admired teammate, made Hernandez stand apart. “Lindor has those qualities,” said Darling, who has watched Lindor play since he first came to the big leagues in 2015. “He has to stick around and do it, but there is the opportunity for Lindor to one day go into the Hall of Fame in a Mets hat. That could happen, that's how good he is.” The statistics already shimmer on Lindor's Baseball Reference page, tantalizing Mets fans who see him as the foundation of the future, as long as the Mets can sign him to a contract extension, either now or at the end of the season.... Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Francisco Lindor
batmagadanleadoff replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
I doubt there's 'demands' going on, but it's The Post. It's not a "demand" in the sense that Lindor might be stomping his feet, raising his voice, making threats and throwing an all-around tantrum as he asks for what he's askin' for. It's a contract term. Lindor's request for an amount of money is "a demand" in the language of contracts. "Offer' is self-explanatory. So you've got an offer and a demand. And when the offer and demand are the same, that'll lead to a contract. -

Pretty cut and dry over at The Athletic: Cy Young Award: Jacob deGrom Second place: Trevor Bauer Third place: Aaron Nola Dark horse: Walker Buehler Jacob deGrom is the best pitcher in baseball. Period. He's a future Hall of Famer. He has the nastiest stuff in the game. His command and control are off the charts. This used to be a race but not anymore. And while they're at it, they should remove the water fountains from the Braves home and road dugouts and make it a crime for anyone to give Braves players water during a game.
