  2. deGrom (.600) also has the highest Mets batting average in today's lineup.

  5. The Mets are like Li'l Abner's Joe Btfsplk, with a black rain cloud perpetually over his head.

  8. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=61109 time=1618595956 user_id=68] it might be 27 degrees tonight in Denver.
  9. My strongest memory of that stretch in 1980 when the Mets were playing out of their minds, bedsides the Hendu homer, is a Warner Wolf recap segment where he was going nutso over the Mets. Warner was also out of his mind on that night.

  12. In his rookie season, Dwight Gooden set the all-time single season MLB record for K's/9 innings with 11.3945. Today, Gooden's rookie season ranks 39th on the all-time list of K's/9 innings in a single season. https://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/strikeouts_per_nine_season.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/strikeouts_per_nine_season.shtml In 1984, Gooden broke Sam McDowell's 1965 record of 10.7143 K's/9 innings. Today, McDowell ranks 72nd on that list.

  14. Edgy MD wrote: Well, 60'6" was arrived at after a lot of experimentation. To reach a desired effect. If the "founders" were after something different, more offense, less base stealing, more groundouts, etc., whatever, they would've settled on different dimensions and rules. And everybody today would be saying how sacred those dimensions and rules are. If they're going to experiment with a 61.5" mound, then the game isn't right, as far as the powers that be are concerned.
  15. The dimensions of the diamond and location of the rubber are genius. It may have been lucky genius, but it's wonderful how it is. Stop all experiments and go fix soccer or something. It's not genius. It's the way it is and what everyone's used to. If the mound was originally 61.5" away from home and MLB proposed to bring the mound in by a foot today, you'd be complaining about the proposed change and claiming that a 61.5" mound distance is genius. You'd be used to a 61.5" mound distance and all the stats and style of game a 61.5" mound distance delivers.
  16. Many of the effects should be able to he calculated precisely with math before a single 61'6" pitch is ever thrown. But what about pitchers who've been throwing off a regulation mound all their lives? How are they supposed to adjust? I remember playing for a few days as a teen-ager on nine and a half foot basketball rims and how that screwed everything up for a while when I got back to regulation size rims.
  17. This Summer, the independent Atlantic League, in conjunction with MLB, will experiment with a pitcher's mound that's a foot farther back -- 61'6". The mound change is expected to reduce strikeouts and this anticipated effect in particular, will be studied closely. https://theathletic.com/2518208/2021/04/14/moving-the-mound-the-double-hook-what-mlb-and-the-atlantic-league-are-trying-out-next/https://theathletic.com/2518208/2021/04/14/moving-the-mound-the-double-hook-what-mlb-and-the-atlantic-league-are-trying-out-next/
  18. Every team has played 9, 10 or 11 games, except the Nats (7) and the Mets (5).
  19. Edgy MD wrote: I was thinking Gooden and Young would be our most likely answer. Close. July 4, 1992. Doubleheader against the Astros. Gooden and Young are the pitchers of record. But Young was the game #2 reliever: Tom Filer was the starter.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: Not for nothing, but I wonder when the last time the Mets sent two African-Americans to the mound in a double-header was. Having two African-American starters on the same Mets team might go back to the days of Al Jackson and Sherman "Roadblock' Jones. (I didn't look it up.) And I'm not sure if they started both games of a double-header. (Jones only had three starts) Later 1979 Mets - Roy Lee Jackson (9/77-10/80), Ray Burris (8/79-10/80) and Dock Ellis (6/79/-9/79) were all Mets teammates for about three weeks.
  21. I protest. 1967 had to survive an entire tournament and win multiple rounds to earn its championship crown. 2021 can just swoop in and take the crown with one win against one cover? Why does 2021 even deserve to go head-to-head with the champ? This is bullshit.

Fans of a certain age will get the reference. Right now, Evans'd be a cover-boy candidate for the old format Sporting News. Skeptics can make a poll: On what day of the season does Evans's batting average fall below .275? Oh, and he's hit three HR's so far, too.
