  1. You'd have a game almost unrecognizable. Triple plays would become common enough that players would intentionally hit grounders. Fine, if that's what you want.
  2. Edgy MD wrote: Infield fly rule doesn't come into effect with a single runner on. There has to be two or three runners on. With a single runner on, there's no real potential to trade one out for a chance at two by letting a popup fall, only to trade an out for the batter with an out instead for the lead runner. This occasionally happens, when there's a notable difference in baserunning speed, and it's perfectly legal. Yes. My bad. I know the rule extremely well but simply forgot. Otherwise, there'd be double figure infield fly rules called every game. But what I wrote still holds for when the rule does apply. Even worse: your way, with runners on first and second, you might be practically guaranteeing triple plays.

  5. Jeez is time flying. There's already a whole generation of adult Mets fans who've never seen a Mets game in real time at Shea Stadium, in person or on TV. Shea, to them, is like the Polo Grounds to me.
  6. I don't know if there was ever a full on ban preventing active players from doing beer ads but players were banned from wearing their uniforms while doing those ads. That's probably still true.

It's not because the defense is more sophisticated. Whether the runner on first during the infield fly is safe or out is completely out of his control. If the fielder can just let the ball fall, he has to be able to get to second, which is basically impossible if it's sitting in the grass 20 feet from second base at the feet of the shortstop. The only smart play to make if the rule didn't exist would be for the runner to stay at first.

  9. Think of all the money the team would save on post game buffet if the sponsor had to supply the hot dogs. I'd want Benny Agbayani on my team for that.
  10. How about a karaoke contest? Maybe some AC/DC song where you can't even tell what language the player's singing in, never mind the actual lyrics. Or a hot dog eating contest? They could get sponsors for that. Money..
  11. That's an interesting take. Your way, I think that virtually every infield pop up with a man on first would result in a double play. Nothing wrong with that, either, if that's what the higher-ups want.

  13. Edgy MD wrote: I think the end of is obvious — extra innings mean added costs, they interrupt teams as they obsessively control pitcher usage, and they add to game length. But bad leadership tends to only look at one side of the ledger when instituting reforms. I imagine the Lords of Baseball are delighted with the outcomes of this rule, and will come up with any pretext to keep it going. I hate it, too, but I agree with you: it'd be very simple for MLB to extend the rule or make it permanent. Besides, if this rule were instituted, say, 100 years ago, for example, no one today would be griping about it or pointing out how absurd it is. It wouldnt be scrutinized at all and would seem as logical as the infield fly or the two strike foul not counting as a strike. All this, even though despite being 100 years old, it'd be the exact same relatively new rule we're complaining about today.
  14. Don's made more major league money than any of his Syracuse Mets teammates -- about $4 milion, to date, and it's not even close. So the Big Macs are on him.
  15. Jeez. A laser third out. Plus a foul ball home run. He didnt have anything that inning.
  16. Get Lugo off the mound already so at least the Mets could bat in the 10th.
  17. Bringing Diaz in for the 8th is about as good a move as I can remember the Mets making in years. Let's see now if it pans out.
  18. On the night Gil's Dodger # was retired, the Mets coulda contributed by wearing 1969 throwbacks with the centennial patch.

For fun, let's test my "We'd do better on this road trip if Williams was a long believer and Castillo was our starter" theory The experts are saying that there are way better suitors for Castillo than the Mets because Castillo will likely be the most desirable player available at the trading deadline and the Mets dont have the prospects other teams do that it will take to get Castillo. Yabbut the Mets are also probably one of the few clubs capable of doing the Reds the further favor of taking a shit salary, so their price in talent could decrease (does anyone read what i write?). Some Guy on the Internet says Mauricio + Allen for Castillo + Shit Prospect is a fair deal, but also doesn't contemplate the Salary Eating Discount I read what you write. But maybe the Reds aren't mainly looking for salary dumps. They're still relatively cash strapped. They want prospects. Cheap baseball labor.

  21. Pete might just obliterate the Mets franchise HR record when he's done. The record's pretty paltry anyways ae the holder, Strawberry, was only an eight year Met.

Which experts? You're gonna make me look again? They're not specifically ruling out the Mets, but the Mets aren't included in their lists of likely suitors for Castillo.
