Love the Topps Photoshop rendering to make early 1980s Shea into Anaheim Stadium on that Ellis Valentine 1983 Topps card. [FIMG=277]http://img.comc.com/original/b8443e4b-bc0b-4aaa-88c9-5ad9c970067e.jpg[/FIMG] Yeah, that's pretty neat photoshopping for 1983. Was Photoshop even around in 1983? PC's hadn't yet reached mass consumption, or anything remotely close, in 1983. They were still in the early adopter stage in '83. But Topps left the stadium untouched. What it did, I think, was only to transform Valentine's Mets uni into an Angels uni. I don't think Topps ever messed with the stadiums. Like on this 1973 card of Bobby Valentine, just below Ellis's: [FIMG=277]http://img.comc.com/original/abdab525-c7fe-4678-b216-5b24a9b99c1a.jpg[/FIMG] The card is represented as an Angels card. But the photo is from Bobby's Dodger stint. The photo depicts an action shot at Dodgers Stadium. Again, Topps "fixed" the uniform, removing the Dodgers chest wordmark and adding Angels racing stripes to the uni. No need to mess with the hat because the front LA logo isn't visible.

Perfecto streak snapped. 8 out of 12 on the '82's.

Of course, these are photos of the highest WAR ranked Mets for that season, in descending order. I mean, if it wasnt a top 12 WAR list ... if they threw in a picture of Larry Foss, for example, I might've gotten stumped.

Perfect 12 on the '72's, too, just as easy as the 10 years before pics. This is, so far, eeezy peezy. Zvon woulda scored perfect 12s on the 60s and 70s, too. Me and him are/(were) goddamn experts on early Mets photos, especially from the 60s. (/brag).

Perfect 12 on the '62s. Recognized all of 'em instantly, with not a micro-second of hesitation. Here's a trick/hint: On BBref, the players appear in their photos wearing the uni and cap of the team they played the most games for. I'll do the rest later. (/brag)

Three straight series! Three straight card threads! Three straight Bobby Valentine appearances! (Rickey Henderson and Craig Shipley, too!) Who was Keith just talking about that was a great teammate and overshadowed by Dave Parker and Dave Winfield? Missed it. Thanks.

=RealityChuck post_id=95369 time=1654718611 user_id=82] So it would seem that you're eligible if you are a rookie when the season begins.

Sidd Finch.

My gander of your Gonder goosed my attention. According to his SABR bio, Jesse Gonder made the 1969 Padres out of Spring Training but never got into a game and was gone after a couple of weeks, à la Jerry Moses with the 1975 Mets. Learn something new about a veteran catcher every day! You are the winner of our "Find the Interloper " contest. Indeed, Gonder was a Padres ghost, their first one in fact as Gonder was on their 25 man roster from the Padres inaugural game. And then Gonder was a goner, never to appear on a major league roster ever again. I figured someone would've found this interloper much quicker because I played the same Gonder interloper card four or five years ago. And that led to a multi post exchange with Zvon doing a lot of the posting, I think. He really enjoyed these card threads.

=roger_that post_id=95358 time=1654710929 user_id=128] Not worse than Mackey Sasser. Or Clint Hurdle. Or Jesse Gonder.

Edgy MD wrote: Similar to what I learned in the Dodger-card thread about Tommie Agee finishing his career as an almost-but-not-quite Dodger. Agee, I'm pretty sure, was the last Dodger Spring training cut from the team that would go on to win the pennant. One new Dodger outfielder that did make the squad in '74 was Agee's Astro teammate, Jimmy Wynn, who might've been the best Dodger that year and who was unquestionably better than the undeserving guy that, nonetheless, won the league MVP that season. The Mets from Mobile.who grew up together, Agee and Jones , sure did fade fast, young and suddenly, didnt they?

The guys that make those lists are always trying to gauge a player's ceiling and then tempering that with the chances of him reaching that height. True. And that article points all that out. In Alvarez's case, that catching is by far the toughest defensive position in baseball and that Alvarez's defense is not on par with his hitting. He's really raw, defensively.

I dunno. I think it was an incredibly powerful reaction for someone who never saw the game in the first place and then essentially concedes later on that not all HBP's are equal. I mean, you have to see the game to form an opinion about the pitcher's intent, no? Ejections? Protests? Are those calls even allowed to be protested? Unless it was all tongue in cheek. I'm definitely guilty of that. Sometimes, anyways. Of course, when I go tongue in cheek and then someone misses the point and goes all literal on me, I then respond by going even tongue in cheekier. If they still don't get it by then, things sometimes tend to go downhill really quickly after that.

There's a web article published yesterday where one of the minor league experts is now rating Alvarez as the best prospect in all of baseball. And BTW, after a slow start, Alvarez is currently destroying AA pitching.

That picture of Laffey is from a road game. At Denver. It was the 20th anniversary of the Rockies first game ever, which was against the Mets at Shea, and so to celebrate the anniversary, the Rockies wore throwback 1993 road unis, just as they had worn during their inaugural debut. And the Mets participated in the celebration by wearing throwbacks of the same unis they'd worn when the Rockies debuted. Me, I wonder if the Rockies paid for the Mets throwbacks because I cant see eff 'n Jeff splurging for that. Especially in 2013.

Now it's fixed. Two HBP's this inning.

I'm watching the game on ESPN gamecast (just for a while). It's gone haywire. Alonso HBP. Then Alonso grounded out to first. Now JD Davis is on 1st. He wasnt even in the lineup. Now nobody;s on base. WTF?

=RealityChuck post_id=95242 time=1654647774 user_id=82] I expected more for Jim Fregosi. He was on a potential HOF track until traded to the Mets.

That's an almost verbatim reprint of an article posted a few days ago. It reads more like the so called insiders opining rather than sharing inside info. Also, the web Sports Illustrated, these days, is ... to call it an embarrassment would be a gross understatement. Not your father's SI any more. Or your older brother's. To steal one of ceetar's favorite words, it's trash.
