  1. Could be the perfect in-between candidate. He can start while Cespedes is still out and the head to the bench as a veteran presence when and if Cespedes comes back. Won't cost a ton. HR's took a little dip last year but he still hit .281. Still was able to start over 100 games in CF. Going into age 33/34 season, which means he still has a few years left.
  2. Grandal was benched during the postseason for his defense. Ramos has a reputation for being injury prone. Just putting it out there.
  3. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: way too much Alonso or Gimenez plus one mid ranked picther (Dunn, Peterson, Kay, Szapucki) and one lower level whatever? I guess that I am playing the Jeter role in this discussion. But, if I'm Jeter, please keep in mind that I know how much you need Realmuto and I have 28 other guys numbers in my phone.
  4. I'm not disputing anything that you said, but we desperately need a major league caliber catcher in the middle of his prime who can handle himself behind the plate and also hit (I mean, actually hit) from the right hand side. The Miami Marlins just so happen to have that exact player and that player wants out of Miami and Jeter sure could benefit by flipping him for some more controllable and less expensive talent. Bruce can play first for the next two years and then we will see what is on the market after 2020.
  5. Since this is really the "Realmuto trade" thread as opposed to really being a Dallas Keuchel thread, I'll ask here if anyone thinks if Alonso, Gimenez, and a lower level sweetner gets it done? Or is even that that too much?
  6. If they slow walk Cespedes's rehab for the entire season and treat the insurance payout as money that can be reinvested into the payroll, that essentially pays Machado for 2019. In 2020 $32 million comes off the books between Frazier, Lagares, Vargas, and Swarzak. I'm not even counting Wright in on this because I really don't know what the buyout situation is going to look like or if they are just going to take the insurance payout for two more years. I also think that Machado probably cost himself somewhere between 5-10% of his previous projected earnings due to his performance on and off the field during the month of October. This is financially possible.

For years, my emotionally based optimism that they would do the right thing blinded me from the intellectually looking at the facts. But now, it almost seems like the opposite. I now possess emotionally based skepticism, but the intellctual side is telling me that there may have been some sort of paradigm shift here.
  8. Joel Sherman says that we shouldn't rule out the possibility. I agree. I really don't expect Manny to be a Met, but Brodie has the confidence of the Wilpons, and maybe he can charm them into spending. Omar did it after 2004. Maybe it can happen again. Maybe. Of course, the knee jerk will be the Wilpons are not paying for Machado, but think about the argument before dismissing it: Why Manny Machado to the Mets shouldn’t be dismissed The Mets currently have zero dollars invested in the 2021 payroll. Zero. They can extend deGrom, sign Machado and still have plenty left for the organic pay raises that will be due Conforto, Nimmo, Syndergaard, etc. I think that BVW is going to be aggressive.
  9. The funny thing about Romo is that he is listed on ESPNs depth chart as the closer for a team that won 90 games yet his stats don't look great. I wonder how that happened?
  10. bmfc1 wrote: If Machado insists on playing SS then the Mets might not be interested. If that was the only holdup then the Mets would be idiots to walk away. Rosario would be a perfect trade chip to dangle in front of Jeter in order to get Realmuto. If BVW is smart he should already be starting the process of gauging what Miami might want for the catcher and leveraging that information against his FA shopping list. I cannot imagine that Jeter would turn his nose up at a talented shortstop with five years of team control left.
  11. I agree with smg58 from a previous thread about how we ought to target one righty and one lefty. The top end leftys are a shorter list. . .Britton and Miller. This is how I rank the righthanders. . . Kimbrel Robertson Soria Familia Ottavino Romo Am I missing anyone? Who are your choices/predicions when chooing one from Column A (rightys) and Column B (leftys).
  12. smg58 wrote: if I'm spending on two relievers then one of them is a lefty. Agreed. Are you alright with Andrew Miller coming off an off season?
  13. OK, let's assume for a moment that Manny is coming to the Mets (huge assumption, but let's go with it for a moment). Which out of the following two scenarios makes for a better team? -Manny at third -Rosario at short -Frazier on the bench -Grandal or Ramos catching -Adam Jones or McCutchen in the outfield or -Manny at short -Rosario in Miami -Realmuto catching -Frazier at third -Lagares in centerfield
  14. I don't think that BVW is going to not get any offensive improvement at all. I also don't think that Harper and Machado are getting over 10 years (they might not even get 10 years).
  15. Plus, Keuchel totally looks like Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, so that is that too.
  16. . . .or, more specifically, the concept of actually going out into the FA market to get a starting pitcher who projects as a #2 or #3. Why? We have this great young staff of starting pitchers already!! It's actually the one strength of the team right now! Why allocate resources to that which is already a strength when there are so many other deficiencies on this roster? Because one of those deficiencies is catcher. Miami has a really good catcher named J.T. Realmuto who wants to be traded. But the Mets have sort of a barren farm system right now, so dipping into the prospect base exclusively in order to get a deal done might prove to be a little difficult. But, if you sign a starter, then you can use Zack Wheeler for instance as a chip in that trade. As far as I see it, the pecking order for starters on the market goes a little like this. . . Corbin Keuchel Morton Happ Ryu Corbin might be a bit of a stretch given the need and what it would cost to land him. But, I want BVW to be aggressive and not settle too much, so for me Keuchel it is. deGrom Keuchel Syndergaard Matz Vargas Wheeler, Alonso, and a sweetner in exchange for Realmuto (add in Gimenez only if Jeter plays hard ball).
  17. Ceetar wrote: Of course they passed up a guy named Chaim. You know that the Wilpons are Jewish, right?
  18. If deGrom and/or Syndergaard hire Boras before we all sit down for turkey, should we worry then?
  19. Edgy MD wrote: I don't believe there's any reason to believe that Brodie VW would be in any way a cipher for Fred Wilpon to impose his own will than any other selection would be. This is probably rehashing the same old argument that has played out on this forum 1,000 times, but if you think that Fred Wilpon does not use his GM's as ciphers for the purpose of imposing his own will, I would suggest that you have not been accurately interpreting the history of this baseball franchise going from 1987 forward.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Nor, btw, do I believe that Fred is at the moment sitting on piles of unspent cash just waiting to unleash it on FAs in a WIN NOW! attempt based on him being 81 y/o instead of 79 like he was, oh say about two years ago. Two years ago was coming off two consecutive playoff appearances and was when it looked as if Cespedes was going to be a reliable centerpiece to the offense and also when we had Familia and Reed at the back end of the bullpen. A few things have changed since then.
  21. Frayed Knot wrote: And, yes, BVW is an agent, but he's not going to be one anymore if he accepts this job and to think his only skill, and therefore his only possible M.O. going forward, would be big signings is kinda silly as well. My point with this was not so much that this is the only thing that BVW can do, but more that, given the elder Wilpon's advanced age, I think that is what we are in for. Once Fred enters into the next plane of existence, then maybe Jeff goes ahead at that point and tries to restructure this thing from the ground up (or Manfred makes him sell the way Selig made McCourt sell, which he perhaps will not do until Fred is gone out of respect for Fred). Until then, perhaps they are now going into "Fred's Last Stand" mode. The fact that they hired the big game hunting agent over the semi-proven holistic organization builder only reinforces my supposition of this, it did not create the supposition.

  23. Yes Bloom helped break down the Rays In Bloom's case, I am talking about much more than "breaking down", presumably as in conducting fire sales. https://www.mlb.com/rays/team/front-office/chaim-bloom/ ". . .he was involved in all aspects of the Rays minor league system, including player evaluation and assignments, the expansion of the department's video, strength and conditioning and mental skills initiatives, the creation of the "Rays Way" player development manual and the execution of individual development plans for the organization's prospects." I don't think that the Mets currently have anything along the lines of a "Rays Way" or a "Cardinals Way" or any other sort of "way". Do you, based upon observation, think they do?
  24. Van Wagenen's Wikipedia page says that his father in law was Neil Armstrong. I cannot see how that can be if. . . (spoiler alert for "First Man") . . .Armstrong's only daughter passed away as a child.
  25. Centerfield wrote: I would be curious to know how deGrom, Noah et al feel about this. Do they like this or do they feel betrayed? My first instinct would be to think that they now feel that they have an inside man working on their behalf from the team side. Based on what I am reading from Tony Clark though, maybe I'm wrong. It would be so typical Mets to have this blow up in their faces.
