  1. I like your nicknames Val. At the very least, I can relate. In '98, I had a sign that said John Olerud - The Quiet Riot. That nickname never caught on either...
  2. It's in Marty Noble's article from the previous page.
  3. Good post 83.
  4. Um, am I the only one freaking out over the fact that Pedro's big toe still hurts?
  5. D'oh. RMPL.
  6. From today's Newsday: By their estimation, the Mets' payroll for next season is roughly at its 2005 level; the 10 players no longer under contract account for more than $30 million, which is what Wagner, Lo Duca and Delgado will make in the coming year. That's no coincidence, either. One Mets official proudly displayed the breakdown and denied the club is merely spending wildly to buy a contender. So much for turning into the MFY's...
  7. Just so you know, I was standing when I posted that.
  8. I guess it was inevitable, but I caught this tidbit in today's News: Minaya confirmed that Mike Piazza's tenure with the Mets officially will end tomorrow when the club declines arbitration to the future Hall of Famer, forfeiting negotiating rights. This means only one thing. That the Mets have to trade LoDuca today and finalize a deal with Piazza later tonight. Do it Omar.
  9. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Am I the only one who doesn't care at all about the World Baseball Classic? I might watch an inning or two because any baseball in March is worth looking at, but I won't be rooting for the country I was born in, or for the country where my great-grandparents were born. I really don't care who wins. I just don't want any Mets players getting hurt. That's my rooting interest. I'm with you Yancy. And at the risk of sounding un-patriotic, if I happen to catch a US-Dominican Republic game and Jeter is facing Pedro, I'm rooting for Pedro to strike him out on three pitches. In fact, just looking at the names associated with the US team, Jeter, Chipper, Asshead...ever since Piazza decided to play for Italy, I'm not sure there's anyone on our team I can even stomach rooting for.
  10. To expand on the above: Minaya envisions the three-time All-Star as a No. 2 hitter. Lo Duca, who turns 34 in April, batted .283 last season with six homers and 57 RBI. "He makes contact. We wanted to get more guys to make contract. We struck out too much last year," Minaya said. "This guy's a gamer. This guy's a guy that is going to give you that leadership quality, not only on the field but also in the clubhouse." Obviously Omar thinks we didn't hit into enough double plays last year. Perhaps the only thing dumber than trading for an old, expensive catcher who doesn't hit for power and doesn't walk, would be to slot him in front of Beltran thereby taking away any chance he could steal.
  11. KC wrote: CF is a pillar of this group, he's not some shark hiding behind an alias out to bite the ass of anyone who strays into the pool with an opinion. I'm a pillar. Cool. Thanks KC, but for what it's worth, that wasn't me arguing with Mark.
  12. Bring him back anyway. Trade Lo Duca.
  13. Combining a couple of ideas in other threads.... Right now, our 6 through 9 looks like this: 6. Nady 7. LoDuca 8. Matsui 9. Pitcher Pretty shitty. Assuming LoDuca isn't flipped for Vazquez, he's more or less locked in at catcher. With Castillo now off the table, I'm not sure there's much out there that would significantly improve us over Matsui (plus we'd have to eat his contract anyway). That leaves only RF as a viable option for an offensive upgrade. I'm not sure this has been discussed yet, but if Philly is looking to deal Abreu (and it's unlikely he'll get traded for Manny), why not talk to them and see who they'd need? I realize it's in the division, and they're actually looking to compete next year unlike Florida, but it would seem the two sides match up fairly decently. We could offer pitching, such as Benson, and they could take their pick of Diaz or Nady.
  14. Grudzialanek is another guy who, like LoDuca, posts a decent BA but doesn't walk and doesn't hit for power. Given that signing him would mean both paying him and eating Matsui's contract, I'd just as soon run Kaz out there and see what he's got.
  15. And, of course, by blasting Delgado, Anna makes it that much more likely that Kris will be traded... On Edit: Any guesses on how Kris is reacting right now? Does he agree with Anna? Does he wish she would shut up? Does he agree with her but wish she would stop pissing off teammates as big as Carlos Delgado?
  16. Let's hope that Sweeney's report is correct and there is money changing hands. That would certainly make the trade make a little more sense. In any case, if LoDuca is our catcher for next year, like abogdan said, there is some pressure on the Mets now to upgrade offensively either at RF or at 2B. Batting LoDuca, Nady, Matsui, Pitcher in slots 6-9 means we're not going to get a lot of runs from the bottom of our order.
  17. I hadn't realized Ralph Branca went over to Japan to support Bobby. Ralphie's still pretty active in his old age.
  18. This is a stupid trade. I hate it. I hated it before it involved arguably the best pitcher left in our farm system. Right now Florida is ecstatic they weren't asked to pick up a portion of LoDuca's salary. I can't believe we actually gave up prospects for an expensive, 33 year old catcher who had a .712 OPS and is only so-so defensively.
  19. However, he ended up there, an OPS in the low .700's isn't out of the ordinary for him. Other than his career year of 2001, his OPS hasn't even cracked .800. And only once since then has it been above .750. 2002: .731 2003: .712 2004: .758
  20. Lo Duca is regarded more for his offense than for his defense, but he is still a sturdy defender. Which LoDuca? I'm assuming they're not talking about the one who hit 6 HR's and had a .712* OPS last year. Plus he'll be making $6.25 million and cost us players? You know, we wouldn't lose any draft picks if we re-signed Piazza either. *As a point of reference, Mientkiewicz OPS was 17 points higher (.729). Piazza, Molina and Hernandez all posted OPS in the .770's.
  21. Word has it that MK throws a mean resin bag as well.
  22. What an unbelievable market for so-so middle relievers. That's it...I'm teaching my son to pitch middle relief and not be that good at it.
  23. Zito will get plenty of starts since Omar traded the rest of the rotation for Manny.
  24. Included in the deal was 24 year old Travis Bowyer who should compete for the role of closer. Minnesota was willing to give up pitchers. I'm glad we weren't willing to give up our's.
