I would have loved to have been listening in on the phone call that Keith made to that Padres trainer. Judging from her quotes, she didn't seem mollified, but wants to put it behind her. I'll bet Keith bungled that, too. I couldn't agree more with your first paragraph, soupcan too. But I couldn't disagree more with your second. I'm guessing Keith was smooth in that "I'm Keith Hernandez" way.
  2. I love the whole concept of the wide tab. Coor's light had it too. It almost seems to be an implicit admission that their beer is not very good, but the handy container lends itself to being consumed very quickly.
  3. Carlos Delgado chuckled at any suggestion the Marlins approached the Mets about sending Dontrelle Willis to Flushing for David Wright. "D-Wright!" the ex-Marlin called out to Wright in the clubhouse, after seeing ESPN mention a trade rumor that has no chance of happening. "I'm selling my place in Miami."
  4. One thing I'm noticing about LoDuca...announcers will speculate about the great advice he is giving a pitcher, and then cite to it as an example of his leadership. Fictitious Example: Gary: "LoDuca out to the mound. He's probably telling him to calm down and focus on the batter. Trying to get him to settle down..." Keith: "Well, that is his reputation. People say he's a leader..." Gary: "And that's the type of thing you just can't measure. Paul LoDuca has really brought that leadership to this team bla bla bla."

  6. According to ESPN, and my memory, Feliciano was called up on the 17th before the start of the Braves series. Beltran first sat out complaining of the hamstring on the 16th.
  7. Bret Sabermetric wrote: You're suggesting a major CYA policy here? I'm with you on that, of course, as I think the Mets' primary question on almost any issue is "Will this make us look bad?" rather than "Fuck who gets blamed for this screwup, how do we fix it so it stays fixed?". But almost no one buys into that line of thinking. No question about it. If he hadn't been used in the San Diego series, he would have been DL'ed. If he had been hurt initially this weekend and was certain to be out the Giants series, I believe he would have been DL'ed. (We would have heard stuff like "We're not sure the severity, but at this point in the season, and in light of his struggles last year, we're erring on the side of caution"). After not DL-ing him initially, and using him in San Diego, the Mets can only pray that Beltran is healthy on Friday and does something worthwhile against the Braves. That way management can say "See? Good thing we didn't DL him, he would have been unavailable until Monday."
  8. This poll may set the record for fewest votes received so far this season. Honestly, no one deserves any beer.
  9. You're missing an option for all of the above. Beltran for not realizing his injury was as severe as it was. Willie for being an idiot and using him when he wasn't fully healed. Omar for not DL-ing him. And the medical staff for not being able to ascertain the severity of the injury. I feel like they are not putting Beltran on the DL because do to so now would be to admit they really fucked up by not putting him on nine days ago. It's like Zambrano....let's continue to deny making a mistake and hurt our team further in the process.
  10. Nady 2 Matsui 2 LoDuca 1
  11. I said the same thing. I can't even sit through the commercials.
  12. What I don't understand about Jose Reyes is how anyone allowed that swing to climb up through the system. He steps in the bucket, gets out on his front foot, and the back foot, instead of staying planted and rotating, slides all over the place. He has a horrible swing. Can we really expect improvement from him as long as he has these mechanics? As to Bret's questions, I'm with Yancy about pushing off any thought of a long term deal until the end of 2007. Let's see where he is then. As far as his OBP this year, give him until the All-Star break. If he hasn't straightened himself out by them, move him down in the lineup and hope there's someone worthy of being moved up.
  13. Every year, at some point, sometimes sooner, sometimes later, the Mets remind me not to get my hopes too high.
  14. If Jorge Julio pitches so well he takes the closer job from a guy with 400 plus saves, and then saves 43 of 46 the following year, I will eat my shirt.
  15. Wait, I just realized Armando is their closer, is this a big game?
  16. LoDuca hits it well but it's tracked down. I'm thinking of not staying up to watch these games anymore.
  17. My mistake. Valentin reaches on a blistering ground ball that just ate up Neikro. That was scored an error? Wow, tough call.
  18. Rumor has it that Beltran is out for this series as well. The incompetence of this team is astounding. Here's the thing, I'm no professional athlete, but when I get an injury, even I can tell which ones will heal in a day or two, and which ones might linger for a week or more. Chavez batted with the tying run on third tonight.
  19. Valentin up. Because God forbid we should get our leadoff man aboard.
  20. Heilman strikes out Matheny. Willie furious...demanding an answer as to why he wasn't walked.
  21. 2 runs score as the IBB pushed another run into scoring position. Isn't Heilman effective against lefties? Isn't Bonds a lefty? Why don't we walk Matheny here so we can push another runner into scoring position?
  22. Not exactly Willie's best game tonight.
  23. I don't understand this. The guy is hitting .220, is about as great a double play candidate you could ask for, and instead they load the bases to give Heilman no safety net to a guy who has already jacked a 3 run HR. Intentional walks are for losers.
  24. This road trip sucks. Other than the Pedro game and the 8th inning last Thursday, these guys have been painful to watch.
  25. Looks like him.
