  2. soupy's review will go up there with "Sucked, Actually" as my favorites of all time.
  3. He may have had an effect on those he met, but my initial thoughts when I read the book were that I couldn't believe how incredibly stupid and selfish he was. His family life might not have been perfect, but he had more opportunities than most. He repaid them by vilifying them and cutting them off for years leaving them to wonder about his whereabouts. His journey "into the wild" is laughable as he didn't venture into the "wild" so much as he went camping in well-known, well-traveled hunting grounds. He died just miles away from civilization because he was ill-prepared for his "adventure". I think a lot of kids go through that phase where they are so idealistic and naive they consider trying something like this. I'm thankful I was not nearly as motivated or industrious to try some of the stuff I was thinking of doing when I was that age. The sad part is, I feel like if he could have made it just a little longer, he would have grown up, become less stupid, and would someday look back upon it as something crazy he did as a kid.
  4. I saw it this weekend. I don't know if I just wasn't in the mood but it didn't do much for me at all. It had a couple funny moments (like the bouncer scene) but overall, it was just bland. Seth Rogen should be a supporting character, not the lead.
  5. Edgy DC wrote: Well, directors often are forced to make their films with the studios gus to their heads, and don't have the juice to make the film that they want to until years later. And then they make it demonstrating that the studio guys were right all along.
  6. Oh, and I agree wholeheartedly about Gladiator. Great performances by Crowe, Richard Harris, and a good job by Joaquin Phoenix too. It was a good movie, but I am frustrated because it could have been a great movie. They built up to the big showdown where Maximus's army was gathering, but then they rob us of this epic battle based upon something a little boy lets slip in front of Phoenix's character (can't remember his name). Awful. We deserved that scene. And to deprive us of it based upon coincidence. I wanted to walk out right there. It was hokey that it came down to Crowe versus Phoenix one-on-one at the end. Characters who stab their opponent before a showdown never let themselves be put in mortal danger. It's out of character and too convenient.
  7. Great post Vic. I remember people saying that "GI Jane" would end up being one of those great Ridley Scott movies that no one sees. It ended up being the opposite. And there should be some sort of law preventing a director from going back and "fixing" movies afterwards. I just don't understand why this practice is accepted at all. You don't see authors going back and re-writing books. Artists don't touch up paintings or add elements after it's been sold. I don't see why movies should be any different. Once it's out there, it's subject to the interpretation of the audience and then you lose control over it. You don't get to go back and say "No, I meant this..."

  9. She hasn't been in any of the movies since Raiders right?
  10. Having Spielberg and Harrison Ford involved gives me hope for this one. I hope they will be enough to counteract the Lucas factor.
  11. Sandra Bullock's husband dies, then he's back again, then he dies again etc. Bullock tries to figure out the timeline while trying to save her husband. We saw a trailer for it and decided to give it a go even though we had never heard of it while it was out in the theaters. Big mistake. Bad bad movie. Inconsistencies, gaping plot holes, people who act incoherently, people who demonstrate a fraction of the urgency such a scenario would seem to call for....just a big giant mess. Skip it. This isn't so much a review as it is a public service announcement.
  12. I thought it was ok as a kid. Unwatchable when it was released on video several years later. When I was in grade school, the teachers kept telling us that if we screwed up our buddy system, one of us would get left behind like E.T.

Is it weird that even though she's in her sixties I'm still attracted to Helen Mirren? You're remembering lines from ancient adventure movies and you think the weird thing about you is being turned on by beauties past their prime? Admit it. You love both Excaliber and Helen Mirren.

  16. Off the top of my head, Animal House, Airplane, Princess Bride. Maybe Caddyshack. I'd take any of these over a number of movies on that list.
  17. I'm seeing a bit of a bias against comedies.
  18. The "Rise" posters around town are cool looking. I didn't realize the Silver Surfer was a bad guy.
  19. Yancy Street Gang wrote: I saw it yesterday and I voted 6. I don't necessarily agree with the wording that went with the number. (It's probably best not to add the cute descriptions. It makes it harder to vote what you think.) It was good. I enjoyed Leo. I thought that the girl was Jennifer Love Hewitt in a wig, but the closing credits proved me wrong. Jack was Jack, and I'm so tired of his act that if anything he hindered the movie. That "rat" impression he did got chuckles from others in the theater but I was probably rolling my eyes. I didn't like the way it ended. SPOILER WARNING! That scene near the elevator where one person after another got shot was just ridiculous. I don't mind that there wasn't a happy ending, but the way Leo's character just got thrown away at the end of a long movie was unsatisfying. And then seeing everyone else got shot one after the other was just too much for me. So overall, eh. I saw this last night. I was going to type out a review but then I saw that Yancy basically summed up everything I was going to say in a much more succinct way. Insert similarity score joke here. I can't even tell you how sick I am of Nicholson's character. I don't see why other people are required to act but Jack thinks it's ok to play everyone the exact same way. I think I know the line soupcan. Check your PM's.
  20. I have new respect for Steve Carell. This was fantastic.
  21. Wow. Of all the names listed above, I've only heard of two of them: Dale Ernhardt and Kyle Busch. I think to appreciate a spoof of NASCAR I'd probably have to know something about NASCAR, and clearly I don't know anything about NASCAR, other than that it involves cars. That's what he said about music. Meaning if we ever had a CPF 500 Yancy would dust us all.
  22. I'm with Scarlet, soup and seawolf. My stomach gets knots every time I see an ad for it. If that makes me a wuss like KC, at least I'm in good company.
