  1. I think the versatility helps, but Zobrist was basically going to be our 2nd baseman. Which makes it a question of Herrera versus Lagares and Conforto. I would argue that Conforto hasn't proven anything yet. I mean, he looks great, and I hope he will be a star. But I think it's way to early to say he's proven anything. He's only had 25 more AB's than Herrera. But I agree that you'd have to be insane to block his progress. Lagares, is more proven, but he's kinda proven that he's not very good, at least with the bat. I definitely think this is where a club looking to win immediately should be looking to improve. Scouts rave about Herrera. And since the idea that young, cost-controlled players are the key to winning teams, I think it would have been a bad idea to block our second best positional prospect. That's why Walker fits so well. 1 year commitment. And with his splits, if roster space allowed, he could even platoon with Dilson.
  2. Mike Puma tweeted from the BBWAA dinner on Saturday that the Mets might not be done adding to the bullpen. Any guesses on who the last guy would be? You'd certainly think at this point it would be a righty. Parnell is a candidate I guess. Before the off-season, I guessed that Sandy would take a flyer on a starting pitcher who had a down year (or was injured) but still has life on his arm. I guess Doug Fister kinda fits this profile, but reports say his arm is dead. I was thinking Tim Lincecum might be a dominant setup guy too, but you'd think someone would give him a shot at starting. Initially I was thinking of Mike Pelfrey for this, but he ended up getting stupid money.

All should be subject to change based on Performance. Certainly. Terry's stubborn, but not inflexibly so. I would put my money on this as well. And as Conforto hopefully shows he is real, he will be moved up accordingly.

  5. Hey, I'm not saying that the Wilpons don't suck (they still do). And like I said, until the full report comes out, I believe that they never had any real intent to bring back Cespedes. But still, when the situation presented itself, whether it was Cespedes saying he wanted to come back, or the pressure from Terry and the other players, or the threat of the Nats, or the fan outrage, whatever it was, the Wilpons had the choice to step up, or make more excuses. And they stepped up. Like we've been asking them to do. And for me, one right step, even if it's in a sea of mis-steps, is worthy of credit. We'll see whether it was just this perfect storm of circumstances that caused them to open up payroll, or whether this is the start of a long-awaited trend. But for now, there is joy in Metville.

I would think that he would be getting a minor league deal from someone before January is over. He might not get back to 99-100 regularly but he was spotting 96ish at time last year, his control was just gone. But that's something that's pretty common right after Tommy John, he's a prime candidate to have a nice bounceback year this year, he's certainly a guy I'd take a 2-3 million flyer on, but it'll probably happen closer to Spring (which, granted, is like 3 weeks away) You think it would take that much? I was thinking 1-2 million with incentives.
  7. Plus there was that small issue of an extra $10 million AAV.

  9. I'm not saying they're completely off the hook. Even with Cespedes, the payroll remains lower than it should be. And until more info comes out, I would guess that they never really intended to bring Yoenis back at all, and were shocked that he came back to them. But still, when the situation presented itself, as unforeseeable as it may have been, boy did they step up. It would have been so easy for the Wilpons to stay at the 3 year, 60 million mark, or to refuse to grant the opt out. In which case I think Yoenis is probably a National. As these talks dragged on, this is the direction I thought they would go. But they didn't. They pulled the trigger. They raised payroll. And they deserve credit for doing so. Maybe this is a sign of things to come, or maybe this will be the exception. I don't really know. But those are problems for another day. Today, we celebrate. And it's because of the Wilpons.
  10. Now that Cespedes is back, we turn our attention to the Mets remaining needs. And to borrow a line from Crash Davis, we're dealing with some serious shit here. *No obvious choice for backup 1B *If Bartolo continues to defy his age and Wheeler and Montero both come back healthy, we are going to have too many starting pitchers again. *Clubhouse remains divided on whether Mrs. Met is a good thing or not. *How to find enough AB's for prospect billed as future All-Star 2B
  11. Hey, look at that. It's snowing. Were we supposed to get snow?

Every superstar claims it wasn't about the money at their press conference. Cespedes may be the first to actually mean it. Fucking awesome. I may be a bit drunk and giddy now, but for me, Cespedes joins Wilmer on the "Guys who will always be good in my book" list. My liquor is almost certainly not as ass-kicking as yours, but I'm PRETTY sure this is at least a little bit because he believes in himself a LOT and believes he's due a much bigger deal come this time next year, and if he's going to be somewhere for a pillow-sleepover, he might as WELL be here. I'm a LOT more comfortable with De Aza at fifth-OF. Fair points. What gave away that he believes in himself? The batmobile or the custom walk-up song?

Poured myself a Hellgate, by Blind Bat, a semi-local microbrew. It's not great, but it's in a growler that I've gotta get through soon, so what the heck. This will be a day long remembered. It has seen the signing of Niuman Romero, it will soon see the return of Yoenis Cespedes.

  15. Per Heyman, wanting to influence the Tabloid Cover Derby results "a factor" in Cespedes' decision.

  19. I mean. It's not every day that the Antonio Bastardo deal becomes official.
  20. Let's have a virtual drink together. Poured myself a Glenlivet. Master Distiller's Reserve. My wife got it for me in London. Perfect night to crack it open. Here's to you guys CPF.
  21. How about Washington? Offered more money for Zobrist, Heyward and Cespedes and were jilted each time. Maybe they need a better pick up line. Holy crap. It will be fascinating to hear how all of this went down. On SNY, they are saying this is will be the first time a team ended up winning a negotiation with a star player when that team never really wanted him in the first place. Wilmer cries when he thinks he's traded. Wheeler calls Alderson and asks to stay. And Cespedes leaves millions on the table to come back. Something special going on here.
  22. So I'm selling these signs that say "Cespedes"... No really, 3 years per Heyman. Opt out after year 1. Left money on the table from multiple teams. Crazy.

  25. And wants him back. “I will put my name behind the statement that Yo was a good teammate on the field and a great teammate off the field,” Wright said in a phone interview Friday afternoon. “And I hope we find a way to bring him back. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/exclusive-wright-calls-mets-sign-yoenis-cespedes-article-1.2506495 The "Cespedes is a Diva" rumor has now been refuted by both Collins and Wright. I hope this is not more of the Ike Davis/Justin Turner bullshit that they've done in the past. If the Mets are doing this intentionally while trying to conjure up justification for passing on him, that's some low class bullshit.
