  1. Yeah, it went something like that . . . (As always, ROFL reading this stuff.)
  2. Not what I was going for . . . but I'll take it!
  3. The Vladick firm is a well-known plaintiff's shop. I wouldn't say that they are publicity seekers per se, but this case was filed lightning fast, and brought in federal court (where it doesn't really belong) and then announced to the press. All that sounds like a squeeze play. If you wanted to try this case, you would bring it in state court. As it is, they don't really have a basis to be in federal court, but they trumped up an FMLA claim that isn't really there just so that they could have federal jurisdiction. The proper way to process a case like this is to (a) contact the other side and discuss settlement in advance, then ( file with the EEOC and then let the EEOC attempt to mediate. If the case is not settled at the EEOC level, then you get a "right to sue" letter and you can bring an action in federal court. The fact that they rushed to file this and publicize it suggests that they are looking for a quick settlement so that the Mets can avoid the bad publicity. But if the case did get to a trial, it would be a nightmare for the team.
  4. The Mets cannot possibly fight this lawsuit. It is a nightmare to defend. If they were really smart, they would reinstate her to her old job and fire Jeff. Of course, that won't happen. So, what will happen is that the Mets will file an Answer to the Complaint in federal court, denying all the important allegations, and then get into mediation and work out a settlement that will not include any admission of wrongdoing and will require confidentiality and non-disclosure of the terms of the settlement. SHe will get paid off handsomely, and will find a job with some other organization and the Mets will pretend like it never happened. That's what happens with serial assholes who are in positions of great power in their organization -- they misbehave and then pay off the victims and nobody has the power or the inclination to hold them accountable. I've seen it happen many times.
  5. While you should never take the allegations in a complaint as if they are true, in this case much of what is alleged here either seems like it might be true and sounds plausible for Jeff. But the very fact that they fired a senior female employee just a few months after she returned from Maternity leave, allegedly for poor job performance, is a historically stupid thing to do. Even if none of the other allegations were true, this would be very bad and any employment lawyer would advise against it. But, the reality is that they will probably settle the case and there will be no changes in management. I doubt that this is the kind of case that will result in Fred firing his kid.
  6. That makes so much sense -- the photo exists, so Kranepool signed it when asked to. The inscription doesn't say that "This" was his 3000th hit, it just says "congratulations on your 3000th hit" which did happen in that same game. It actually makes the autographed picture more interesting - it now has a cute story to go along with it! DD
  7. When Olerud was living in the house for 8 months while the neighbor was in Scotland, there could have been this huge wind storm -- yea, that's it, a TORNADO -- and the tree was uprooted and they had to take it down. Yea, that's the ticket. Too bad, because i really kind of liked that tree . . . Now -- too fucking late. Viva La Tree!
  8. I never understood the appeal of Baccharat. Give me poker or craps any day. The Tequila is fine, however.
  9. I just hope they go to an NHL model where the instant replays are centralized and a crew of full-time replay officials are looking at this stuff and making the calls rather than sending the umpire crew off the field and into the tunnel to look at the replay, which takes time and asks guys who are not typically doing it to make those calls based on video review.
  10. Someone please get a message out to the bullpen and tell Valdez to sit the hell down!
  11. Complete game shutout Complete game shutout Complete game shutout . . . Jerry . . . are you listening???
  12. That only goes to show you that you can never trust the auction house . . . There is no way that they reached out and spoke to Kranepool about that so quickly. There's a photo of the umpire retrieving the ball and handing it to Clemente, so Eddie backing up the play is conclusively false, and that's not second base he's standing on. Regardless, it really is Ed and Roberto, and it really was signed by Ed. Beyond that, who the hell knows. (I think the mystery surrounding the picture now makes it even more interesting than if it were the spontaneous event itself!)
  13. You're right about the black shirt under the uniform. Hmm. Could the picture have been a re-staging the next day? Perhaps we need to find Mr. Kranepool and ask him . . .
  14. This picture turns up everywhere from that day -- Clemente doffing his cap to the crowd from second base OE -- someday I'll learn how to embed images in posts . . .
  15. There is a smudge/spot on Clemente's hat in both pictures, and the uniform seems to be the same in both. It's possible that somebody posed Kranepool and Clemente for that picture either right after the actual event, or later in the game (or even after the game) at first base. It does seem from facial expressions like neither player is very excited by the moment!
  16. It's an interesting mystery. Kranepool is certainly playing defense (he's got a glove on) and Clemente looks to be "on base." It could be that after the 3000th hit there was a stoppage of play and if the ball was thrown back into the infield Kranepool may well have been the cut-off man and had the ball, so Clemente could have walked over to first base to receive the ball (along with a standing ovation and perhaps some other ceremony). But, it does look for all the world like he's standing safe at first base with his foot on the bag. If only there were video of the event available on you-tube . . . DD
  17. You have GOT to be F'in kidding me!
  18. Deep, cleansing sigh of relief . . .
  19. you know Santana is an ACE -- shuts down the Cards 1-2-3 the inning after the Mets take the lead! He smells a win, baby
  20. Let's see if Carpenter stays this sharp second time through the order . . . but if he does . . .
  21. Gets Pujols with bases loaded. Big out. Scarlet at the game today, so I'll have to pinch hit for her from the office - but only for next hour until 3:00 meeting. DD
  22. I hate Park. He's worthless. Even for $600K, he'll get to spring training and take innings away from Pelfry and Humber and any number of other kids who have so much more upside and who I'd rather see pitch. If Park is the #5 starter, he'll suck and it will inhibit the development of whatever young future star who ends up at AAA as a result. Park will have one or two good starts early and we'll wonder whether Oman caught lightning in a bottle, but by June we'll be wishing we had Ishii back. Tell me that Humber couldn't put up a 4.81 ERA and lose as many as he wins -- that's what Park did last year -- giving up 1.4 baserunners per inning pitched. H.A.T.E. him.
  23. I like Newhan. A few years ago he came up with Baltimore when their second baseman got hurt and played so well that when the second baseman came back, they put him in the outfield. He's versitile and can hit, although when you get 1 at bat a week, it's hard to show that. Worth a shot here. No downside.
  24. I think I'll pass this year. Too many leagues to do justice to the task. Unless you need more owners to fill in space, I'll let somebody else take a shot. DD
  25. Right -- I was thinking of the wonderful sunny day for Game 1 of the NLDS, when we crushed the Dodgers. THAT was a nice day.
