  1. Has anyone seen, or commented on this, from Adam Rubin: ]After struggles in 8th inning continue, Mets drop J.J. Putz 7th inning BY Adam Rubin DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Thursday, June 4th 2009, 4:00 AM PITTSBURGH - Jerry Manuel met with J.J. Putz Wednesday and informed the ex-Mariners closer that he was being moved from an eighth-inning to seventh-inning role until he can rediscover his form. Putz was the primary culprit in a five-run eighth inning Monday night that resulted in the Mets' second loss in 22 games in which they led with sixouts to go. He will be replaced by rookie Bobby Parnell as the primary set-up man. Manuel described the move as temporary. "I watched some film today, and we think we've found a pretty big, glaring mechanical flaw that's kind of slowly progressed, maybe even through last year," Putz said. "I think we're going in the right direction." As for a lesser role, Putz added: "When you get into those pressure-packed situations, you really don't have a chance to work on anything. All you're really trying to do is figure a way to get somebody out. Maybe, by taking a step back, you're allowed to kind of pitch with a clear head and really think about what you're doing as opposed to just trying to think about getting a guy out." I like it in concept. I just dislike how they continue to try to define undefinable roles like "7th inning guy" or "8th inning guy".
  2. Not to offer a defense, but neither of the last two hits was really hit hard...just found a whole.
  3. Can we officially say that Putz is "not working out"?
  4. Who is watching on SNY? Gary Apple is hyping a potential Met trade if we stay tuned for Sportsnite? Anbody know what he's referring to?
  5. a few things: I heard the sound byte of Delgado on the radio this morning. Right before the "I can't guarantee that." ; he said: "I'm pretty sure I will be back this year." Again, the News can't make a headline out of that. Wagner coming back: Billy doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who will happily accept a 7th or 8th inning set - up role. Lennon's piece: Come on David, you can do better. He has a "long history of leg problems", but "hasn't been on the DL since 2004"? Which is it?

The MFYs responded with Sinatra's, which was released as a single that year. The Mets occasionally dabbled in Frank as well. If you watch the '86 WS on DVD, you will notice it as part of a stream of New York songs played between innings, including "Autumn in New York". metirish May 28 2009 12:45 PM ="Fman99"]="Centerfield"]Dear Mets, please ignore the unwarranted grumbling from my fellow fans who don't know how to have a good time. They hate life and everything that is fun. Like the B-52's. I think Sweet Caroline is a riot. I'm going to continue to sing it and not worry about what anyone thinks. Along that line, I have some other suggestions as well: 1. Throw back HR balls hit by opposing players. 2. Play Sinatra's "New York, New York" after wins. 3. Put up a meter counting the number of HR's hit into McCovey Cove. 4. Day-O!!! 5. Throw an octopus on the field before playoff games. By the way, I love the unique configuration of the outfield wall. Not knowing whether a ball was a HR for six minutes? Absolute blast! CF hit this post out of the park. 9. ]or the Alberto Castillo game in 1998. The game after was pretty good, too. I was at that one. The teams combined for 6 total hits in a 1-0 Mets win. Bobby Jones gave up singles to the first two guys he faced, then gave up only one more over 8 innings. Tim Wakefield took the loss, despite allowing only 1 hit over 8. The Mets run came in the sixth, when Brian Mcrae singled, stole second, then went to third on a ground out. With two outs, Wakefield balked him home. The game ended with the tying run on base, and John Franco striking out Troy O'Leary looking on a ball about 18 inches off the plate. At the time, I think it was the first 1-0 game at Fenway in seven seasons.

    Church

="Edgy DC":28jn3asd]In fairness, that doesn't mean that the second-base guy wasn't following the play.[/quote:28jn3asd] True, but on an appeal, can the ump ask for help? I was under the assumption that on an appeal play that base's ump had to make the call. Rotblatt May 19 2009 10:36 AM I haven't even seen the replay yet, but just given our penchant for mental errors so far this season, I'm willing to buy that he missed it. I'd be curious to know when the last time a call like that decided a game, and what that manager's reaction was: did he stick up for his player, or throw him under the bus? IIRC, Manuel never liked Church. Didn't he refuse to say that Church had the starting job this spring, even though he was hitting the cover off the ball? I like Church. He hit well pre-concussion for us, as well as this April (.845 OPS) and he's stellar defensively. I was really hoping that we'd be the first team to give him a full-time job, but obviously that's not gonna happen. If we're not going to use him, we might as well trade him, and we could certainly use a first baseman. Johnson would be expensive right now, though--he's hitting .336 with 24 RBIs--and like Edgy said, the Nats have more outfielders than they know what to do with. Benjamin Grimm May 19 2009 11:09 AM When you have outfielders, you play them in the infield. Rockin' Doc May 19 2009 11:25 AM The MLB website clip of Church running the bases is totally inconclusive. You can't really tell anything from that video. I think the most conclusive evidence (circumstantial as it may be) that he missed the bag is the immediate reaction of the Dodger players pointing to third base and calling for the appeal and the total lack of an argument by Church, Manuel, or any of the Mets coaches. I'm sure there must be better footage of the play than what is posted on MLB's website. Benjamin Grimm May 19 2009 11:26 AM I'm waiting to hear what Cookie Lavagetto has to say about it. gerrard00 May 19 2009 11:48 AM I really feel bad for Church, I don't think he was given a fair chance to succeed. Admittedly, missing third in that situation is inexcusable...but I'm not sure it's much worse than the new team wide aversion to sliding. Edgy DC May 19 2009 12:00 PM Yeah, it does hurt that one of the guys to express his open flabbergastment was Beltran. Frayed Knot May 19 2009 01:39 PM ="HahnSolo":3r9ecv1y]="Edgy DC":3r9ecv1y]In fairness, that doesn't mean that the second-base guy wasn't following the play.[/quote:3r9ecv1y] True, but on an appeal, can the ump ask for help? I was under the assumption that on an appeal play that base's ump had to make the call.[/quote:3r9ecv1y] If the umps had "rotated" on the play and the 3rd base ump's attention was diverted elsewhere as a result (ie. a hit into the LF corner where he runs out to check on fan interference while home ump covers 3rd) he simply would have deferred to his fellow ump once the appeal was made. Edgy DC May 20 2009 06:16 AM "When I asked my third-base coach if he missed the bag, he said he missed the bag," Manuel said. So what's Shines' responsiblity there? Should he be stopping his hourse in full gallop and making him turn back and retouch, or should he look away and hope he was the only one who noticed? Other Church bulletins: ="David Lennon"]Manuel denied Tuesday that there is a rift between him and Church - "I like Ryan" he said - and the outfielder played along. As for getting thrown under the bus after the game, Church shrugged. As for the perceived rift, which Church hears about from fans as well as media, he insists that's not the case. "People read too much into it,"Church said. "They're not in here. [Manuel] cares, he's got a good heart and he wants me to succeed." That doesn't mean Manuel can't get angry. And he explained away his skewering of Church by chalking it up to emotion. It's too early to know if they will be exchanging birthday gifts this year or following each other on Twitter. Neither Manuel nor Church used the term BFF to describe the other, in case you were wondering. "You're doggone right I was mad at him," Manuel said, smiling. "If he was my son, I would have strangled him." Anthony Manuel: "Errrr..."

I watched it on Mets Fast Forward this AM, and it looked like he might have missed it. However, I also noticed, and it was also pointed out by Boomer and Carton, that the 3rd base ump did not appear to be looking at the base.

I haven't been a huge Manuel-the-BP-manager fan, but color me 100 percent in favor the continued Gossaging of the Rod. Plus it's a home game so there's not going to be a save situation anyway. My issue was more fatigue-related, since he hadn't gone two innings in a game since '07, and they were bringing him right back. But its all good.

On FAN yesterday afternoon, Jerry said the same thing, but also said he expected both Tatis and Reed to get time there. And the Murphy to first thing was more a "Get Sheff in the lineup for his power" idea, and not a "hey, let's move Murph around" idea.
