  1. Was he a broadcaster?
  2. And we were pushing midnight on a Saturday when Mitchell was allegedly phoning for "plane reservations." I have no doubt he was on the phone, but I'm skeptical he was talking to the Flushing rep for Liberty Travel. Also, in the spring of 87, Gammons did a story about this game for SI, and Mitchell said he was in the clubhouse, because with Schiraldi, a righty, on the mound, he figured Danny Heep would get called on to pinch hit. This demonstrates how players sometimes don't pay attention to what goes on pitch-by-pitch. Heep had hit for Santana way back in the fifth inning (another of Davey's questionable moves in that series).

  4. Whenever you get two new teams in a World Series I always wonder who they'll get to throw out the ceremonial first pitches. Now, I haven't read who the Astros will use, though I'll be stunned in Nolan Ryan is not one of them, but I did see who the Pale Hose will trot out for games one and two. For game one: poster boy for the Go Go Sox Luis Aparicio, who I believe is also a boyhood hero of Ozzie Guillen. Great choice. Now, if you think about it, the White Sox history has been spotty enough that the second choice is not that obvious: perhaps a long-time productive White Sock like Harold Baines; maybe hall of famer Carlton Fisk; you could go back to guys like Wilber Wood; or even throw a bone to Frank Thomas, who, while persona non grata with the manager right now, is a 16-year member of the team and will have Sox on his cap when he goes into the Hall of Fame. But I still can't believe who they decided to bring in for game 2...Bo Jackson. Now, the only enduring memory of Bo in a White Sox uniform I have is whining about not playing in the 93 ALCS, then going 0 for 11 when Lamont put him in there. I don't even believe his best days as a ballplayer were even in Chicago. I don't know why this bothers me so much, but I'd be annoyed if I were a White Sox fan.
  5. "He hit us, threatened us with machetes, poured gasoline on us..." Okay, at what point do you say to yourself that maybe this guy is a little loco and get the hell out of there? Were the free tapas that good?
  6. Meet the Mets. But the original of course, not the later, more PC version. And if there were an official Mets soundtrack, The Curly Shuffle would have to find a place on it. God, how lame do you have to be to have a Journey song be your anthem?
  7. The Donnie Moore/Dave Henderson talk from that article is WAY premature. If Houston wins tonight, and let's say Lidge polishes off a 4-out save, everyone, from Lidge, to his teammates, to half the state of Texas will have forgotten about Pujols's home run before they even board their flight to Chicago. The Moore/Kim/Niedenfuer talk should be shelved until Houston loses games six and seven.
  8. repost mistake
  9. Felix had the steroids thing down, it was the "performance-enhancing" part of the equation that gave him trouble.
  10. My first knee jerk reaction when he walked Edmonds was "walk Albert." I know it goes against convention putting the tying run on second, but should Garner/Lidge have even considered it? wouldnt you rather face Sanders there with the bags drunk?
  11. October 14, 1973 -The Mets even the World Series with a 10-7, 12-inning victory over the As in Game 2.The game is notable for a few reasons:-Willie Mays's final appearance-Buddy being called out at the plate on a non-slide as he tried to score on a sac fly, leading to the classic argument at the plate.-Tug going six innings in relief, giving up 4 runs in the process, only to watch soon-to-be-forgotten man George Stone pick up the final three outs for the save.-Don Hahn sets a WS record for at bats in a single game. He singled and scored in seven official at bats.
  12. The Catcher (Paul) said in the post game that in situations like that (third strikes in the dirt or that get away) the ump almost always yells something like "no out" or "ball in play" which he did not do on this occasion. That's not a rule, mind you, just something that generally happens. And I second, third, and fourth the motion that Piniella sounds clueless. At some points, I think McCarver and Buck (who I also cant stand) actually felt bad for him, not correcting his mistakes.
  13. Maybe this should go in the baseball news of the weird thread, but perhaps no one had a better game than 25-year-old Shaun Dean of Porter, Texas. Seated in the left field bleachers, Dean caught not only Berkman's 8th-inning grand slam, he was also on the receiving end of Burke's series-winning blast in the 18th. Dean will be invited to attend practice on Friday at Minute Maid Park, and is expected to return the balls to Burke and Berkman.
  14. My thought in watching the Sox-Sox series is that the White Sox found a Japanese middle infielder who can actually play.
  15. So, is it Torre or Staub for #41? edit: you gave Yes answers for both.
  16. 10 - Jesse Orosco, 1987
  17. Could 22 be Mookie Wilson? Wasn't he sent to Toronto the same day as the Viola trade with Minnesota in 1989? But I would think Mets fans would have noticed. I know I did.
  18. 5 - Darryl Hamilton, 2001
  19. 43. Bret Saberhagen, 1995.
  20. 41 - Rusty Staub, 1985
  21. 35 - Tommy Davis, 1967
  22. Ventura's walk-off in 99 against Atlanta. Tackled by Todd Pratt before reaching second base.
  23. 12 - Mike Hampton, 2000
  24. Is Newman the guy who thought we'd all care where Andy Roddick's Mojo was?
  25. Re: the Braves' dominance. I just turned 38. The last year that they were not in the postseason [discounting '94] was the same year I graduated college. Or, put another way, Joe Walton was still coaching the Jets the last time the Braves were not playing postseason games.
