  1. As tempting as it is, I'm already in two football leagues and even I have to be reasonable at some point.
  2. Keep in mind that Syndegaard was called up a full year after most people thought he would be. Also keep in mind that it was done for baseball reasons, not for money reasons.
  3. The other possibility is that the Astros made the Brewers a bigger offer than the Mets were willing to match. Which is fine. We're talking about a guy with a .751 OPS in a hitters' park. That's a bit pricey for a the level of upgrade.
  4. That pitch was a little too fat for 0-2; Jansen dared Uribe to hit it, and Uribe crushed it.
  5. Can't blame Granderson for holding there, it was a terrible bunt. Jansen is in now. I like to see that from a Dodgers' perspective.
  6. Great hustle by Granderson to get to second there.
  7. Mejia bails himself out. The power fastball to strike out Pederson was huge.
  8. I'm guessing that it wouldn't take Harvey, deGrom, or Syndegaard to upgrade on Mayberry or Eric Campbell.
  9. Ramirez has been swinging the bat quite a bit better lately, and he was obtained for a relief prospect who currently has a 4.60 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in AAA. I would have upped the bid on that.
  10. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Colon gets an awful lot of credit for a guy with a 76 ERA+. I didn't realize his ERA+ was that bad, but yeah, he hasn't been good this year. I figured he was getting a pass early on because of the wins, but now?
  11. I always liked Hamilton. He was never a great player, but he was dependable. I'll never understand why things like this have to happen.
  12. d'Arnaud was easily our most improved player to this point. I don't see Plawecki coming close to matching what d'Arnaud has been doing, much less giving the Mets a reason to "Wally Pipp" d'Arnaud, but I'm hopeful he'll be at least decent. Alderson also deserves credit for not being too quick to cut ties with Gilmartin. Hopefully Gilmartin rewards the confidence. I'll feel much better about our pen when (if?) Black and Parnell come back. Until then, where's the duct tape?
  13. And Omar Minaya's vaunted Latin American scouting program continues to boast more established juicers than established major-league ball players. For somebody who looked like he could do no wrong his first two seasons here, the long-term damage Minaya inflicted on this team is staggering.
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: - So many Mets fans pre-declared that games were going to be lost this year because of inadequate defense at SS ... and in Game 1 they were right!! Who wants Ian Desmond now?
  15. (Duda's two-run single was preceded by a bad, bad, defensive play when Desmond called off Uggla on what should have been a routine, inning-ending popup and then dropped the ball.)
  16. Now make them pay, Lucas.
  17. Trades like this make me really glad the Ottoneu league doesn't count saves (I have Joaquin Benoit). Wisler might be worth enough in the long run to justify this deal from the Braves perspective, but it's a no-brainer for a Padres team that is basically all-in for this year. It will be interesting to see how all these moves look in October.
  18. Blevins is an interesting case of somebody who ought to have been used as a LOOGY but wasn't. He's much more naturally inclined for that role than Torres, even though I think Torres is the superior pitcher overall. TransMonk wrote: I guess the dream ends for Gilmartin. What happens when Black and Parnell return? Does Carlyle go away? Assuming Black is out on Opening Day, we still have Mejia, Familia, Torres, Torres, Carlyle, Blevins, and one spot open (possibly Montero or Gee, but not certain). Carlyle looks like the most likely to lose his spot, but a lot can happen in a month (as we've already seen). It didn't look like we had room for Carlyle to begin with, and now he looks like a good bet to head north. Don't assume we won't see a lot of him.
  19. Torres had very severe reverse platoon splits last year, driven mainly by 25 walks in 119 plate appearances against lefties. That had never been an issue before, so I'm not sure what happened. He's actually been very solid against righties the last two seasons (.557 OPS last year and .470 the year before), so I'd hate to see him get used as a LOOGY. He does improve the bullpen depth on the whole, and has significant upside if he can overcome the control issues.
  20. Gilmartin has been pitching noticeably better lately, which (assuming it continues through the week) is probably sufficient to bring him north.
  21. I have a suggestion. If no night works for everybody, why not just bypass the draft and have a blind auction on every player like we do with waiver-wire players during the season? We can limit the bidding to 20 players at a given time, and 24 hours per auction, and by the time the season starts we'll all have functional rosters.
  22. So the draft is happening next Friday now?
  23. I'm not suggesting that they were. But I do think circumstances have forced a decision to be made on Montero's role sooner that Alderson and Collins would have preferred, that the decision is a difficult one, and that either direction they go with him carries some risk.
