Neither LaRoche nor Giles is making that much, but they were evidently too expensive to keep even in this market. I'm surprised Schuerholz and Cox are sticking around. A few more years of this and they'll be the Devil Rays minus the good prospects.

I can't imagine it (Endy, feel free to prove me wrong on this one), but his glove still makes him valuable even if he reverts back to his previous numbers.
  3. At this point I think Franco would be more valuable as a bench coach than as a player. His highlight for us last year was getting Beltran to make the curtain call. I don't know if anything is up regarding Chavez. It's rare for an NL reserve player to have a glove that more than makes up for any inadequacies he might have with the bat, but he probably will never have more value than he has right now, and if somebody sees him as a starting centerfielder and is willing to pay a starting CF's price to get him, I'm listening.

Armando Benitez. opinion: I guess I was one of the many who couldn't forgive his blow-ups against the Braves in September 01, but Benitez was much better than he generally got made out to be, and it's unfortunate that we basically got nothing for him. fact: Soriano got 8 years at $18M per year, and Zito got 7 years at $18M per year.

He hits lefties fairly well, plays all three outfield positions, showed excellent power before last year (and plenty of veterans have seen their power numbers plummet upon arrival at PETCO too), his progress was stalled when he lost a full season to an injury but that was a few years ago and he's hardly old at 25 -- why not? I think he'd be more likely to make the club in a reserve role than Milledge, whom I think would need to beat Green out of a full-time spot to make the Opening Day roster. Newhan complicates things, but with Endy in place as the fourth outfielder and Green a liability against lefties, the Mets need an extra righty outfielder more than a lefty one. Plus I think Johnson is simply better than Newhan and will show that in the spring.
  6. Opinion: The list of #1 overall picks in the MLB draft is, with a small number of exceptions, really unimpressive. Fact: Moises Alou's OPS has exceeded .900 in each of the last 3 seasons.
  7. ="Johnny Dickshot"]But maybe in the absense of a big stud the plan is, lets gather as many high-potential arms as we can and see who rises to the occassion] There's some logic to that approach. I don't see how he could hurt, at any rate. I get the feeling the New Orleans affiliate will have some very well-paid players by AAA standards. iramets Jan 14 2007 05:26 AM We've actually reached the point that I will open these "Mets sign Soandso..." with zero excitement and a total expectation of "OK, let's see what the bullshit gag is THIS time, sigh"--isn't there some sort of story about boys who cry wolves? Eventually, the Mets will sign a Zito or an A-rod, and no one will bother opening the thread that exclaims it.... abogdan Jan 16 2007 03:27 PM I checked in just to see "Mets sign Sosa" in the subject line. Oh yeah, Mets sign Sosa.
  8. The problem with Mulder is that he won't be ready for Opening Day. Between Pedro's injury, and Pelfrey and Humber likely becoming more major league ready as the season goes on, I don't really think the Mets need to add another pitcher they'd have to wait for. If I spend the money at all at this point, I'd rather it be on somebody we could send out there right away.
  9. I wonder if Minaya, Randolph, or Peterson saw something in his mechanics in Cincinnati that changed from when he was in Toronto, suggesting that the huge difference in performance might not be as flukey as it looks. That would affect his value, to be sure, but the Reds would have known that better than anybody and didn't tie him down. I guess we'll see if they spotted something along those lines.
  10. He may or may not be better than Feliciano. I could see a one-year deal for the sake of depth, but that contract looks silly.
  11. I fear excessive multi-year contracts to mediocre LOOGYs.
  12. My concern is that if Newhan makes the Opening Day roster, we will have problems with left-handed pitching again. We won't have a right-handed batter to spell Green, and only Damion Easley to spell Valentin. He would have to clearly outplay both Milledge and Johnson in the spring for me to feel comfortable replacing one of them. I think he's fine as depth in case of an injury, but I wouldn't guarantee him a spot.
  13. And 120 games of Alou would constitute a huge upgrade from what we got out of left field last season.
  14. No argument from me. If I'm an Astro fan I'd be pissed at him. (And I'd like Carlos Beltran, who gave them one hell of a postseason and more than justified his half-season rental without ever promising anything beyond that, but what do I know?)
  15. I was under the impression that Minaya turned down Milledge for Blanton, not Beane. At least that is what I hope. Barring a trade, I'd give Milledge a fair chance of wrestling the RF spot away from Shawn Green. Everything has been really expensive this winter, and if this proves to be a peak in the market then Minaya will wind up looking smart. We're still prohibitive favorites in our division. The Phillies got Garcia, but replacing Wolf with Eaton is a downgrade and they haven't addressed right field. The Marlins are a good centerfielder and a bullpen away from scaring me. The Braves have become a small market team. And the Nationals will consider 70 wins a success. We have some young guys who are likely to get better as the year goes on, and Pedro only has to be healthy by September to pitch some meaningful games for us. Sure I was hoping to upgrade somewhere, but the teaam is still in solid position for a playoff run and the future looks good.
  16. I could justify a minor league deal for the sake of depth, but we're going to need a righty OF to spell Green against some lefties at the very least, so I can't really see him beating out both Milledge and Johnson for that bench spot. Assuming he can even outperform either of them.

Nymr83 wrote: if you look closer you'd see that Blanton allowed alot of HITS this past year but not a high amount of walks, hits tend to be more random and could easily be the result of bad luck... i'd be happy to get him if the price is Milledge straight up. Beane can keep the guy if he wants more. But he struck out so few people that you'd have to expect a lot of hits simply because everything gets put in play. I just don't see enough upside to justify dealing Milledge for him. Haren is another story, but he's Beane's ace right now so obtaining him might not be so simple. Beane is obviously trying to get Minaya to settle for the inferior pitcher, but I think dealing Milledge for Blanton would be a mistake.
  18. Happy New Year everybody! 1969... 1986... 2007...
  19. Blanton this past year: 4.82 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, .309 batting average against, 109 K's vs. 241 hits. Zambrano could do that little, and he wouldn't cost us anybody this time. Or, to put it another way: no thanks.
  20. You have to start by making a realistic assessment of where Pelfrey and Humber are right now (it's pretty clear that they had already passed Bannister on the depth chart in the eyes of the Mets), and then decide if there's somebody in the FA pool who'd be an upgrade in 07 that would not require a multi-year committment. I'm not sure if there's a match, given the current market (which, as of this morning, is even more inflated than I previously thought), but there's no good reason not to look for one. As for deals, you have to be careful. I see no point in trading Milledge for less talent in return, and dealing Humber or Pelfrey for a pitcher you'd need to re-sign next offseason could do the rotation more harm than good in the long run. I'd like a better-than-average pitcher if one is available at a reasonable price, but there might not be any.
  21. I'm not absolutely for standing pat, but attgig makes a good point, and I'd prefer standing pat to a panic deal. This rotation, with Trachsel instead of El Duque, got us to within an inning of the World Series. We're still well ahead of the rest of the division.

    Suppan

Trachsel will sign for a bit more than 500K in this market. I wish him well but don't want him back. I don't understand the demand for pitchers like Suppan when a few million more dollars will get you quality instead of mediocrity. People have said that Suppan will get 10 or 11 million a year, but I'm betting at least 12. The postseason has to guarantee him more money than Ted Lilly or Gil Meche.
  23. Here's yet another case of so many conflicting reports that you don't know who to believe. At this point, given that the two pitchers I'd have considered dealing for (Garcia and Jennings) have already been traded, I think it's Zito or nobody. And I don't want nobody.
  24. You could offer him $3M for this year, but add an option for several more years at a higher price or a good buyout. That would beat the Padres offer, while putting the Mets in a position to be set at second for a while if he's back to 100% without risking much if he's not.
  25. Has anybody else put Humber ahead of Pelfrey?
