  1. The leash had to have gotten tighter on Pelfrey. I basically agree with Rockin' Doc at this point. I'm still hoping to see him work through his troubles, but if he can't keep the Mets at least close while he's on the mound, at some point you go to plan B. Right now Sosa would be the best option. Humber has done very well his last two starts, but based on his spring I'm inclined to give him a full year in AAA unless there's an emergency.
  2. I don't see it as a major long-term issue, but you have to discipline players in the organization who don't hustle, whether they're top prospects or they'll never get past Brooklyn. I don't have any problem with it, although I don't see why it's a story either.
  3. Amazing bunt. Now i can go to bed.
  4. Do the BP adjustments factor in that having a deep bullpen (like Atlanta does this time around) or a particularly sucky one (like Philadelphia) matters in close games? The Phillies have lost several games already to the Mets and the Braves because of their pen. Since their pen was a major source of concern going in, I don't see that as bad luck.
  5. We're talking about essentially the same team that came within an inning of the World Series last year. Pelfrey has replaced Trachsel (a wash) and Alou has replaced Floyd (a big upgrade over last year's Floyd, at least), but superficial changes otherwise. I haven't seen any reason to think that picking up where they left off last year should surprise anybody. The biggest difference is that it looks like we'll have to contend with the Braves, but that might actually make September interesting this time around.
  6. It's only two starts. If you decided that he won the job in the spring, you owe him at least a few more starts before you change your mind on that. As far as New Orleans goes, Jason Vargas has looked pretty good so far (3.42 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 19 K and 5 BB in 23.2 IP), and Sosa has looked very good (1.38 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 24 K and 4 BB in 26 IP). Park, on the other hand, has struggled (ERA over 6 due to 4 HR in 16 IP). I'd have to assume Sosa is next on the depth chart right now.
  7. Rotblatt wrote: The real question is, why did Cleveland elect to pitch to him with first base open? Not only did the wild pitch leave first base open, but it put Borowski behind in the count. And A-Rod's been hitting pretty well lately from what I've heard. The Indians' manager will have fun trying to explain this one.
  8. And in what has to be one of the most bizarre panic moves I've ever seen, Brett Myers is now a set-up guy. Lieber takes his spot in the rotation. Yes, I'm serious.
  9. The Phillies also gave the White Sox back Gio Gonzalez, the pitching prospect that they'd gotten in the Thome deal, for Garcia. It will be interesting to monitor the deals for starting pitchers that went down in the offseason. The Astros' deal for Jason Jennings just took a wrong turn, as Jennings appears headed for the DL. Jason Hirsh is already pitching for the Rockies, and so far doing all right.
  10. I really thought making a draft priority of low WHIP pitchers would have worked better than it has to date. Twelve baserunners in two innings, Mr. Young? Yuck. And any time you feel like pitching a 1-2-3 inning is fine with me, Mr. Nathan.
  11. File that one under "profoundly improbable," but anything that makes the Yankees lose is a good thing.

    OoTS 4/5

I wonder what Mr. Rollins is thinking now...
  13. I don't know if I could consider the Phillies and Braves heads above the Marlins -- Julio's implosion against the Nationals this afternoon notwithstanding. They were only a game behind the Braves last year, and should only move forward this year. Plus I think the alleged improvements the Braves and Phillies have made are largely exaggerated.
  14. Oh enough already. We're talking about a guy who's torn by whether or not it would make more long-term fiscal sense to walk away from $81M over the next three years as though he were in need of sympathy. Let him rot, and the Yankees with him.
  15. Jorge Cantu was just demoted by Tampa Bay; B.J. Upton is officially their starting second baseman. Cantu would intrigue me if the Rays are willing to part with him cheaply. I'm not sure he'd have any short-term value, but the Mets could afford giving him a year at AAA to see if he regains his bearings (on both offense and defense).
  16. Gore's family was in tobacco, which he alludes to in the movie. He talks about how they were in denial about the health effects of tobacco until his sister became terminally ill with lung cancer, and makes the analogy with global warming in that we'll regret it if wait too long to acknowledge the truth and act.

    You're cut

If nobody outbid the Mets when he looked like a potential starter, nobody's going to take his contract now.
  18. Plus he's already waived the no-trade clause once. (Or did he waive it to go to Arizona in the first place as well?) I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask around, at any rate.
  19. Any chance that a team with relievers to spare (like maybe the Twins) could use Shawn Green? I'd be willing to eat most of the contract to make it happen.
  20. ]In an NL East division where the champion could easily win less than 90 games, Um, excuse me? The Nationals lost Soriano and don't have Nick Johnson to start the season, so they're probably going to be worse than last year. Historically bad? It's far too soon to discuss that.
  21. We're talking about a guy who was closing for the Royals last year when he should have been in AA ball. (Insert snide comment about the Royals being an AA team here.) Good velocity or not, it's going to take more than two weeks of spring training to make Burgos an important part of a good team's bullpen. As for Bannister, they traded a ML-ready starter with limited upside for a reliever with high upside who's not there yet. I don't see any reason to think Bannister would be higher than Pelfrey on the depth chart right now, so he, just like Burgos at this point, would most likely be heading to New Orleans if he were here.
  22. Doesn't sound like it would be fair to hold this one against Johnson, given that nobody else appeared to do much with the bat.
  23. I can't help thinking there's more to this than meets the eye. I just don't see the benefits to releasing him.
  24. I'd like to see them find a way to move or retire Franco so the decision becomes easy. Newhan has been playing pretty well too, actually, so I wouldn't sell him short either. Given all the uncertainties in the rotation, now is not the time to shrink the bullpen.
