  2. metirish wrote: Found this today in an article.... ] That John Maine, as the focus on him gets sharper, will start having ugly episodes with the media. The kid is a complete introvert and I believe he resents, not revels in, all the attention. I'm already seeing bad signs: Before games, he avoids being bothered by plugging into an iPod and doing a crossword puzzle at his locker, or spreading across the sofa couch in the clubhouse and watching TV, in both cases curiously never making eye contact with anyone. A few more pointlessly insulting articles like this, and nobody will blame Maine if he does get mad at reporters. Then again, now that the knee-jerk reaction has gone away, I hope Maine realizes that this is the kind of comment he's better off not dignifying with a response.

  4. I think Bobby V would count as a player for both the Mets and Rangers as well. on edit: Nope, he played for a bunch of teams but the Rangers weren't one of them.

  6. It would only expose the phoniness of the league if Giambi's contract was voided now, which would validate the point that Giambi was trying to make while exposing his own phoniness. Or something like that. As far as I'm concerned, everybody is to blame for this steroids mess. Even the clean players looked the other way, as did the league, the media, and the fans. I'm more concerned with what's being used in the league right now (that not nearly enough is being done about), than in focusing on what can't be undone. I certainly see no point in singling anybody out. I don't want to see Bonds break Aaron's record any more than anybody else does, but the likely fact that he was the best hitter to take steroids doesn't make him worse than the others. The list of players who juiced is likely to be very long, and is almost certain to include guys we rooted for and perhaps still like. But since nobody is innocent, nobody should be asked to give anything back.
  7. Wow this game got interesting.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: Yeah, starting him there is interesting, as he'd never played shortstop in a big league game before last night. Easley played 27 games there as recently as last year. He played some short at Norfolk last year and in spring training. Willie apparently thinks his range at short is better than Easley's, or at least wants to see what he can do there. Gotay could make a decent career out of being a switch-hitting utilityman if he can handle shortstop, assuming his bat isn't quite good enough to play second full time.
  9. Soriano just played a shallow fly ball to left about as poorly as you can play it; Green gets on with a two-out single.
  10. Soriano appears to be advertising something on those black things below his eyes. Nice 1-2-3 inning to start for Vargas, although Gotay looked shaky on that last grounder.
  11. Batty31 wrote: Quick Reyes update...Reyes did want to play today, but Willie made the decision to sit him out. Reyes says he's ok. Ed Coleman said more than likely it would be a day to day deal. The TV said basically the same thing. Everybody exhale.
  12. Although Gomez did play there last night. That's what I get for not staying up.
  13. I hope Vargas isn't a ground-ball pitcher. I might have put Gomez in center and Chavez in left, because I don't know how familiar Gomez is with left field.
  14. I'll be really impressed if the Mets can win with this line-up.
  15. Milledge seems to have a disproportionate amount of non-stories attached to him. As far as I'm concerned, this is an issue only if you can demonstrate it's interfering with baseball. As for patchy, I'm still waiting for his reply to my wedding invite.
  16. There may be two outfield spots open if Alou's option isn't picked up, so I still wouldn't assume Milledge is going anywhere. Plus somebody has to offer fair value in return, which really doesn't seem to have happened yet. Willie's comments could have easily been made before they had a fair idea how many games Alou would miss. People do change their minds in this business, too.
  17. So basically this guy's Napoleon Dynamite without the dance moves.
  18. Nymr83 wrote: ESPN.com says Piazza out 4-6 weeks. The new A's manager would have to be Manager of the Year if that team makes the playoffs after all the injuries they've had. I think this is the worst luck I've ever seen one team have.
  19. Johnny Dickshot wrote: I think somebody on UMDB points out that when Skip Lockwood came into a game Jane Jarvis played "Skip to My Lou" on the organ. It didn't make Skip any less effective. I don't know if this is a good thing or not, but I'm old enough to remember that. If you're going to have theme music for a closer, you might as well go completely over the top and do something like The Doors' "The End." So do I really want to know what Piazza has to say about global climate change? on edit: I'm also old enough to remember Leo Foster. And Pepe Mangual. But can I remember what I did at work yesterday?
  20. We were saying the same things about Jose Valentin at this point last year. He was hitting .125 on May 3, and looked like he had about 5 AB's left in his career. Now there's no guarantee Newhan will be any good, but you owe him more chances than he's gotten so far.
  21. Well, they're a half-game removed from the best record in the National League, despite a few underachievers on the offensive end. To me, that's good news. LoDuca is pressing, and Wright looks completely psyched out. Those are concerns, but they need to be patient with themselves and the Mets need to be patient with them. I agree that Delgado doesn't really look that bad at the plate, but things just aren't happening for him right now. His average will come up soon. There are plenty of good hitters around the league on the wrong side of .200 after a month, and that's normal, so it's still far too early to panic. Pitching is more of a concern for me, because neither our rotation nor our pen is deep enough to handle any more injuries. I think Sosa has to replace Park, but then I'm not sure what to do if Pelfrey continues to not keep the Mets in games. A month is too soon to make a judgement on how any player's year is going to go, and given that there's nothing even slightly wrong with the Mets' record at this point, I don't see a need for anything drastic.
  22. Gwreck wrote: ="Willets Point"]Had Omar deigned to pry open his wallet for Matsuzaka and/or Zito last winter then it could have been an effective youngster like Perez pitching tonight instead of this hack Park. They bid $39 million for Matsuzaka and outbid the Yankees. The wallet was wide open. Passing on Zito was a good idea...or do you disagree? Who else would you have rather had? Gil Meche? You can fault Omar all you want but let's be fair and throw the names out there you would have rather him acquire. Don't forget that Freddy Garcia and Jason Jennings both rewarded their new teams by spending a chunk of April on the DL. Starting pitchers are badly overpriced right now, and Minaya has opted to look for bargains. Given that he got Hernandez, Maine, and Perez last year essentially for Kris Benson and Xavier Nady, he's not doing poorly in that regard. Yes I think it was a mistake to let Sosa pitch in New Orleans yesterday knowing he might be needed, but it's one game, and hopefully Park is gone after this.
  23. He was a no-risk pickup. That being said, the Mets had the option of holding Sosa out of yesterday's AAA game but didn't. I can't justify giving Park another start based on what I just saw.
