  9. Heard on ESPN radio this morning that Bondermann has the second most victories of all active major league pitchers under the age of 23.Anyone know who's first? (They didn't say)I think he's going to be something special, and wonder why the author didn't make him one of his top 5 starting pitchers.Later
  10. The key is when a player has been added to the 40 man roster. IIRC, Zambrano started out his pro career as a position and was later converted to a pitcher. So, he may have spent more than three or four years in the minors, exposed to the RuleV draft, and nobody selected him before he made a 40 man roster. I didn't look at Zambrano's records, but this is a technically possible explanation. And, about Neyer's piece. The rule was changed several years ago. I remember when teams could only option a player a total of three times - period. Not the possible yo-yo situation of today's game where a player could be sent down, then brought back up, several times a year (like Victor Diaz this year).Later

    Uh oh

According to WFAN, Piazza has a hairline fracture on his left wrist. He will be "day to day" for a few days until the swelling goes down, and they know whether he has to go on the DL.So its Castro and...?The backup catcher, Mientkiewicz is still on the DL.The next option is Cairo. On the pre-game show, Willie said he hopes he doesn't have to watch Cairo "try to catch Looper's 95 MPH fastball."So do we.There was a rumor (not confirmed) on some other Mets sites, that Mike Jacobs had been called up. There was no confirmation on any reputable site(MLB, Mets.com). But maybe Mike is sitting in the stands in street clothes, just in case.EDIT: Update. ted Robinson just announced the Jacobs has been called up. Santiago DFA.They didn't want to announce the callup until he arrived at the ballpark.Later
  14. That still can be done by the end of the month if they think they can include him in a deal.Later
  15. I agree.I can also imagine Omar having an Andy Rooney (60 minutes)- type conversation with the GM of the team that claimed him:"Look at all the second basemen I have assembled here on my desk..."Later
  16. Traschell (and maybe Cairo). to SF for Alfonzo Rationale:From the SF side - Fonzie has at least one more year to go on his contract. This will save them money to go into the free agent market next year. Cairo's deal expires at the end of this year.(He did sign a one year deal, right?)They need pitching, and might be willing to take a shot at extending Traschell if he is ok. If not, they still save money next year. From the Mets side - Fonzie's family still lives in New York (My cousin teaches at the private school his kids attend) and he still likes the organization. (She told me)He isn't any worse a defender at second than Cairo, and has always been a high OBP guy- just right for the #2 spot in the Mets order. His contract for next year is insurance against the kids not being ready yet, and if they are, he can provide a backup who won't embarass the team if he had to play more than a few games in a row.Comments?EDIT, I had Cairo on the wrong side of the equation.Later
