  1. Yance, don't stop him with facts. He's on a roll. Later
  2. I feel like I'm at the opera. How many solos (soli?) can we see? Can't anyone hit a homer (or any other kind of hit, for that matter) with someone on base? Later
  3. Thank you Mr. Wilpon. Later
  4. Maybe we'll get to see Roberto Hernandez or Jacobs catch. Later
  5. Benson 3 Heilmann 3 Jacobs 2 Anderson 2 Later
  6. Maybe if Casey had managed Reyes, the message of "butcher boy" (meaning chop down on the ball and run like Hell) would have sunk in. And Reyes would be the next Ichiro. Later
  7. Methinks he had "100 runs scored" running through his head. Later
  8. Hmmm, they're auditioning Shealy in advance of an off season Helton contract dum..., er,deal? If they aren't, why bother to play him since Helton's deal still has six or seven years to run. Or is this a Tim Harkness type of scam? Later
  9. Gee, I used to work in the building right next door. Later
  10. The official name is SportsNet New York. Later
  11. Mr. Newman's first official act will probably be to steal the name from New England Sports Network and name it New York Sports Network. Mr Cohen's first official act will be to defend against the NESN infringement lawsuit. Later
  12. Bitch of a way to say "Happy Birthday" to Heath Bell. (Its really today) He hasn't pitched since Mike Schmitt was still playing, then he's put in there against a good hitting team that's pissed off. Later

    Is It Over?

Ed Coleman provided some insight yesterday afternoon. While he didn't go as far as to say that they are in violent disagreement, he said that "Peterson is a numbers guy, while Willie likes to go with his gut". Seems to me that conflict has to be resolved in some way if Peterson is going to be there next season. Later

    Our Bullpen

This is one of those threads that makes this place really fun; stats, opinion, challenge, defense, all with some logic thrown in and no personal attacks. Good job. Please permit me to add my 2 cents. I wondered why Graves was given some late season, low impact situations when those innings might have been given to Heath Bell. Maybe he'll get to pitch tomorrow (Sept 29th), on his birthday. Later
  15. Has anyone heard whether Keppinger's leg is recovered enough to play Winter ball? If so, where will he be playing? His minor league OBP numbers make me think he would be an effective #2 hitter. I see him being a Ron Hunt type of in-your-face, my-uniform-is-always-dirty, overachiever type of player. Comparing his baseball skills to Anderson Hernandez' tools is a discussion of the type that could keep the hot stove fires burning this winter. And in a sorta' roster related question, doesn't Mo Vaughn's contract (counted for luxury tax purposes) also expire at the end of this season?EDIT: Edgy, if you think this shouldn't be in this thread, please let me know. I'll make it a new thread.Later
  16. Padilla - 2.5 Heilman - 2.5 Reyes - 3 Beltran - 2 Later
  17. LaRussa has had bad luck in pinch running situations since the Jerry Dubzynski incident when Tony was managing the White Sox. Killed their playoff hopes that year. My friend Shoeless Don the White Sox fan still hates him for that move. Later
  18. either Willie is going to see if Aaron can handle a two inning save situation or ..... Looper? Graves? I'm afraid to even think about it. EDIT: Of course, this is based on the supposition that Willie has learned that RH can't pitch every day. And I'm not really sure he has learned that lesson - he's only been burned twice thinking that this season. Later
  19. Jacobs - 5 The legend continues....... R. Hernandez - 2 Cairo - 2 Beltran - .5 Floyd - .5 Later
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: They also mentioned OFer Carlos Gomez was close and would be in the 20-30 range. That's my boy! From his combination of tools (especially speed) and development at a higher level this year, thought he'd be rated higher.Later

    Smokin'

The big test will be the hot dog race. Which will still be served deep into October - Yankee Franks or Fenway Franks? Later
  22. For those of you who are interested, its 2-1 Bosox after 4 1/2. RBIs by Ortiz and Manny in the first. Jays' run scored on a PB. (Wakefield on the mound. He had a no-no through four) Later
  23. I keep hearing about Rollins breaking the Phillies team record for hitting in consecutive games. But what team was Pete Rose playing for when he set the NL record? I though the was with the Phils at the time. Later
  24. IIRC, when he was in the Mets system, he wore fatigues all the time and had several body piercings. That apparently got him labelled as "someone we don't want in our clubhouse." He is one of those Faberge eggs- when he's intact, he's very valuable. But when he's broken, he's worthless. And he's spent too much time on the DL over his career for my taste. Add that to the fact that he hasn't pitched well in several starts down the stretch for the Fish this year, and I'm getting a mental red flag about his arm. I'd pass. Later
  25. We now take a slight detour from the Metsiness of this thread, but stay on the topic Edgy just introduced- the pursuit of women. When he was a junior officer in the British Army, Winston Churchill was Court Martialed for "Being out of uniform for chasing a woman, while he was naked, through the halls of a hotel." Winston pled his own case before the Court Martial. He based his defense on the British Army Uniform Handbook which stated "A British Officer shall be considered to be in uniform if he is properly attired for the activity in which he is engaged." He was found to be "not guilty." We now return you to the Metsiness of this thread. Later
