They're "famous" for not selling out (especially first round) playoff games. I guess they have become blase about winning the division every year, and want to save their whatever for later rounds. 2. Then I'm ok wid' 'dat. Later
  3. Edgy DC wrote: I think getting batsmen in the lineup should be a higher priority. And that is one thing we've agreed on all along. But I still have mental images of Norm Siebern playing left field in Yankee staduim running through my mind. And that brown grassless area in left field at DC staduim where Frank Howard patrolled - it wasn't that big, a testimony to his limited range. If playing the outfield is what it would take to keep Jake's bat in the lineup, so be it. He would probably drive in more than he lets in. But I'd prefer someone with a modicum of speed. Later
  4. Edgy DC wrote: Last I checked they don't get a vote on who plays the outfield. Would they agree that it's a good sign? I hope those who were unfortunate enough to pitch on a day that Cairo was at first and Woodward in the outfield would. Good point. I was just asking if you thought Jake has enough speed to play the outfield. Later
  5. ="Edgy DC"] He openly speculated about using Jacobs in the outfield occasionally, which is a good sign. Do you think the pitchers would agree with that? Later
  6. Welcome aboard rookie! Now, get up on that table in the middle of the room and sing your school fight song for all of us. Later
  7. Just to keep the mental gymnastics going, here's a list of players who will be free agents: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2005-10-04-free-agent-list_x.htm Aside from the high profile players who have been discussed (Konerko, Fecal, Molina, Ryan, et. al) I spotted a few role players who might be an improvement/ fill a niche over who are currently on the roster: If they will be going with Jacobs at first, and want some lower cost backup insurance, how about John Olerud, Scott Hattieberg, or Olmedo Saenz (a professional right hitter)? And for the backup 1B/3B/of role, how about John Maybry? The only problem with him is that he's a Cardinal and St. Louis is like baseball's black hole - players come in and then never leave because they like the place so much. Later

  9. Fair enough. Just trying to be helpful. Later

  11. Yancy, there were times this year that I wasn't sure if you were going to go blind, crazy, or both. If you are going to do this again next year (we hope) I propose a rule that says you can't award any fractions of a point other then .25 or .50. Later
  12. from rotoworld: Mario Encarnacion, a former major leaguer who had been playing in China, was found dead Monday morning in his dormitory. The cause of death is not yet known, but investigators said his room had not been broken into and that a post-mortem examination found no signs of external injury. Encarnacion had suffered from gastroenteritis and he was suspended for a time by the Chinese Professional Baseball League last year after testing positive for steroids. Encarnacion, 30, was once a top prospect of the A's, and he played in the majors with the Rockies in 2001 and the Cubs in 2002
  13. Thank you, Yancy for all your hard work. Congrats to Young David. As Murph used to say "The cream always rises to the top". And we look for good things out of Mike Jacobs in years to come - finishing in the top 20 in only 100 at bats is quite a feat. Later

  15. He was pretty good. Talking about the starter's wildness, he said something like "the catcher's setting up outside but the pitches are coming inside". Sure enough, it happened on the next pitch. I was amazed that he got time from the others to make his points. They worked pretty well as a team, nobody really stepped on each other's lines. Later

Takatsu's problem (as per my friend Shoeless Don the White Sox fan) is that his stuff is at best mediocre. He relies on an eccentric motion. A few times around the league and batters begin to recognize it and tee off. Don't think it has anything to do with communication unless you consider that fact that he was successful with a prior catcher, but this year his primary receiver was AJ Pierzynski. And AJ has been known to have had problems communicating with all of his pitchers in SF and Minny, whether their primary language was English or not. Later
  19. Mike Jacobs was originally targeted for 'Zona. But they have decided to have him play in one of the more advanced Winter leagues in Latin America. Not sure which one. EDIT: Oh crap! I'm Joe Torre. Please tell me I'm not an ugly Yankee. Later

  21. Great! Now we can root against Pettite and Clemens. At least its something. Later

  23. And Jake finishes with a BA over .300. As they say, he was a triple shy of the cycle. What else does this guy have to do to get serious considerationn for the 1B job next year? I hope they don't go out and get someone who just puts up similar stats (e.g.- Overbay) just for the sake of bringing in someone "experienced". Later
  24. Did he beat Willie Mays to that first hit? Didn't Willie go o-fer 20+ AB before that homer off Spahn? Later
  25. I've seen two of the greatest righthanded hitting catchers of all time leave New York - Campanella and Piazza. I don't know which was sadder, but I consider myself lucky to have rooted for them. Later
