  3. Spinning off from my observation in the Frank Thomas thread, I just happened to look up Roberto Clemente's career stats. He had one year in the minors, where he hit under .260. In his first five years on the majors, he had a grand total of 100 Bases on Balls. TOTAL. In his fourth year he had 31, then retrogressed to 15 in his fifth year. With today's emphasis on OBP, would you have kept him on your team? The obvious answer should be YES, because he brought other things to the game (gap power, speed, defense, excitement). And those other talents were obvious to the most casual fan. So, how long should we wait these OBP-conscious days for a young player like Reyes? Do we overlook his low walk rate and just sit back, enjoy the other things he does on the field and wait for him to improve his walk rate? Or does it even matter? Later
  4. He's the first sportswriter who I've noticed has used the term "impatient" when describing Omar. Looking at his moves, and the timing of those moves, it makes sense in many cases. It reminds me of the reputation of old GM Frank "Trader" Lane, who at times seemed to make a deal just to make a deal. Later
  5. Nice, Vic. Do you feel the quality of Woody Allen's work has fallen over the years, too? If so, what do you consider to be his "peak"? Later
  6. TheOldMole wrote: Rickey was a pioneer SABRmetrician -- I remember an article he wrote in Life explaining why batting average was an outmoded statistic and we needed to concentrate on things like OBP. It makes perfect sense that he'd do it to have more negative stats to concentrate on in contract negotiations. He took note of OBP? Then those early contract negotiations with Roberto Clemente must have been fun. Roberto had a total of 100 BB in his first five major league seasons. That's probably the only thing Rickey had to use against him in those negotiations. His agent must have countered by asking why Rickey took him in the Rule V draft in the first place. Wish I was the proverbial fly on the wall when those negotiations were taking place. Or did players even have agents in those days? Later
  7. I asked him about that. I don't recall his answer.Later
  8. Never knew he had a book. Thanks, Later
  9. It seems that Donald Trump took less time to select an apprentice than it took for that deal to be finalized. Later

  13. I'm hoping there is some way the MLB Hall can recognize the lifetime contribution to the game made by Max Patkin, the "Baseball Clown". He doesn't fit into any of the sub-halls (executives, writers, etc.) Later
  14. That's a lot of work, Squid. Did you get your running in today? (or whatever it is that you do with tentacles) Later
  15. Just got back. I had to go out of town for a funeral - my dad's last surviving sibling - his sister. She would have been 89 today. May she rest in Peace. Later
  16. http://www.komotv.com/stories/41097.htm Plus, more on the Seo deal. Boone? I guess this shows how much they are looking for a replacement for Kaz. It also shows little willingness to give Hernandez or Keppinger a full shot. Rather, they would plug the gap with a veteran, albeing wasjed up one. Later
  17. ="Edgy DC"]He's just missing the word back. But if the words on the page are what he meant to say, he's also missing a clue. Later
  18. Before you go any further, take a step back away from your keyboards and read that quote again. The writer says that the Rays would "convert Matsui to a shortstop". Apparently, the writer doesn't know that Matsui WAS a shortstop for the 12 or so years prior to this past one. So, how can you believe what he writes? Later
  19. Rice and Gossage will make it. I'd also vote for Blyleven. Tommy John (also on the ballot) doesn't have to be voted into the Hall. He's already got a new wing named in his honor. Later
  20. Well, if you believe Jim Bouton, its because they get MORE sleep at home. Later
  21. M&MD typically would jump all over this in favor of getting Baez because: 1) He was 7-7 in save opportunities against the Yankees this year, so Mike must think he's the second coming of Goose Gossage. 2) Baez is a name player, on a team other than the Mets, so he just HAS to be better than any young Met, right? 25. Regarding the early posts in this thread: Is it really possible for us to know what went on inside his head at that monent? As for the rest, concerning punishment, at the time it happened I would have voted for public disembowelment. Later
