  1. Edgy, this is the last move I read about. Mets reassigned RHP Jeremi Gonzalez to minor league camp; optioned RHP Bartolome Fortunato and RHP Mike Pelfrey to minor league camp. I've noticed the names of Ragsdale, Basak and Lambin in box scores earlier this week. When Reyes played his forst game since returning from the WBC, he pnly played a few innings. I think Lambin took over for him at short. EDIT: Edgy, the only other move I could find was Padilla being put on the official 60 day DL. Later

  6. Looks like this kid won't have a fond memory of his Mets experience: From today's Daily News ]CATCHING BREAK: Catcher Jesus Montero, a 16-year-old Venezuelan phenom, had a painful tryout. Looking to get a jump on a base stealer from behind the plate, he reached too soon and was clobbered by minor-leaguer Jamar Hill's swing. Observers feared a broken arm as Montero writhed in pain, but that concern proved unwarranted. Montero could command more than the $1.4 million Dominican outfielder Fernando Martinez got last year at 16 if the Mets win the bidding when Montero is eligible in July. He must be quite a prospect. Don't ML teams usually check out foreign prospects in their home country? Bringing him to the US must mean teams think he's something special. Later

From things I've heard, Diaz' only problem is limited range. (Which is why I suggested the diet) He reportedly has good hands, catches anything near him and turns the DP well. (Those were the same things I heard from my Canadian friends about Jeff Kent when he was in the Jays' organization.) Later
  8. Putting together some thoughts about second base: From today's NY Daily News: Victor Diaz still has a minor league option. From discussions about Soriano: He's a head case, a good hitter, but lousy fielder. Idea: Hey! We have one of those. Why not option Diaz to AAA, put him on a diet, and play him at second base every day to see what he can do? From prior reports when we got him, Diaz wasn't terrible. It was just that he concentrated more on his hitting than his fielding. But now, maybe he can be convinced that improving his defense would be his best shot at becoming a major league regular. Whaddaya' think? Later
  9. Being Ed Kranepool was being a student at James Monore High School in the Bronx when my wife went there. She didn't really know him. She was a year ahead of him, so they weren't in the same classes. Later

  18. I forget where I first read it. It was either in Bouton's Ball Four or Brosnan;s The Long Season. "Latin American ballplayers are all first ball, fastball hitters". Once I read that, I began to take notice. We;ve read the quotes: Ralph Kiner "The toughest thing to do in baseball is walk Tony Pena". "You can't walk off the island" Have you seen anything so far in the WBC, or just in watching ball games over the years, that would challenge that stereotype? Do you think the OBP skills of Latin American players improved since GMs and fans have started to take notice of that stat? Or was it a false impression in the first place? Later
  19. Willie has been saying nice things about Gonzalez. I'm getting scared. I'd keep Iriki with the big club as a long man/ middle reliever (actually, I'd put Zambrano in that role) and give Bannister some regular starts at AAA to stretch out his IP/G and keep him ready to step into a starting role if needed. Lima is a wild card (in more ways than one). He's either a starter with the big club or fodder for the waiver wire. Later

  21. A friend of mine, a Jays fan, suggested this as a solutiojn to the second base situation. ]I think the Mets' best move is to take Lastings Milledge out to second base and start with "This is where you stand". What do you think? Later
  22. Since Anderson Hernandez is away from the team for a few days attending a funeral, it will be interesting to see if Willie stays with Keppinger full time, or plays Woodward at second. With Reyes still with the DR team in the WBC, Woodward has been seeing a lot of time at short. But Willie has said he wants to give Woody a look at second. Later
  23. My cable station doesn't have SNY yet. (I'm pissed) But I checked out the box score. Who is "J. Flores" who had 3 hits, 3 rbi, for the Mets? Did the announcers say anything about him? Later
