  1. David Wright a Blue Jay?edit: lost the link. I'll post it shortlyThe link:http://torontosun.com/Sports/Columnists/Elliott_Bob/2006/07/16/1686900.htmlJust think of what would have been posted in the current third base history thread.Later
  2. The Mets had nine third basemen in 1962, starting with Don Zimmer. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/1962.shtml Many have said he screwed up the position so badly that it took the team many years to recover. They also had seven catchers that year, and it took the team a while to stabilize that position, too (with Jerry Grote). Later
  3. Thank you for posting that right before lunch. I think it was once available without prescription. They called it New Coke. Later
  4. Willets Point wrote: No one is seeing the upside of this! We need Wright to get the faith healer to work on Pedro's hip. And Delgado's strikeoutitis. Later
  5. Johnny Dickshot wrote: He's got This Year's Lee Mazzilli written all over him. Horrors! I hope he never sells his soul to the Yankees. Later
  6. Thanks. After struggling at AA earlier this year, my kid has his average up around .250 - and rising. And what would be bad about an outfield of Lastings, Martinez and Gomez some day soon?Later
  7. Didn't one of the Yankees (Andy Petite?) have a commercial for Bibles? Was it sponsored by a particular church? (MOrmon?) I forget if he was in uniform or announced himself as a member of the Yankees. Later
  8. Finally saw it today. It was everything I've read here (especially from Vic) and more. The length didn't bother me at all. In many (most) movies I have found myself looking at my watch and wondering how much longer to go. But I did not look at my watch, or feel the need to, throughout this film. It was perfect escapist fare for a hot summer day. Later
  9. Where's Don Gullett on the list of those (Yankee) free agents. And he should be near the top. The writer is either too young to remember or didn't do his research. Or both. He had one good year, then injury ended his career at the age of 27/28. Later
  10. ]Joe McEwing has cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to Triple-A Round Rock. McEwing was removed from Houston's 40-man roster on Wednesday. Jul. 15 - 2:12 pm et This was the assignment they designated him for. Later
  11. Owens down. Bell up. See bottom of article: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap;_ylt=AoXz3JcSvOjJOFM7npZxi5IRvLYF?gid=260715116 Later
  12. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Do players still have roommates on the road? I would guess in the minors they still do. Gotta' control expenses. Seems logical to me. Later
  13. Fonzie was one of the smartest baseball players I ever saw. He always seemed to do the right thing at the right time, offensively and defensively. He would make the perfect road roomie for Lastings. Later

  15. WP, Y'mean you have a wife who thinks she's Jackie Kennedy? Later
  16. ]JAKE WESTBROOK, RHP, CLEVELAND Rumors have had the Indians open to trading Westbrook for some time; with a team that was expected to be in the race down to the final days of the season badly underperforming, there's no reason to think they wouldn't become increasingly open as the July 31 deadline approaches. Westbrook isn't the sexiest option available, but he's 29, under contract for a reasonable $5.6 million next year, and is a very good pitcher who's cleared 210 innings two years in a row. He's a power sinkerballer who's reliant on his infield defense and not giving up the longball, which makes him a good fit for the Mets, and while he's not as good as the 3.38 ERA he put up two years ago, neither is he as bad as the 4.49 he posted last year. Verdict: Not a bad idea I guess the writer hasn't envisioned the fate of a sinkerballer with the limited range of the right side of the Mets infield behind him. But with Belliard a free agent after this year, maybe they would be interested in Keppinger plus???? Later
  17. ]R. Cedeno Nahhh. It couldn't be. Could it? Later
  18. Edgy DC wrote: Andruw Jones is from Curaçao. Better ballfields? Same Queen. Later
  19. I just realized something. When I flew over Aruba a few years ago prior to landing, the pilot pointed out that the island was devoid of greenery except for one golf course. I didn't see any baseball fields there. Where did Ponson and Andruw learn to play the game? And if the fields are just dirt, the kids must have to deal with some tricky hops. I wonder why more infielders haven't emerged from there into US baseball (minors and majors). About Queen Beatrix, when I worked at Emery Air Freight, she came thisclose to permanently suspending operations at the Maastrict Airport (The Emery European hub) because the flights sometimes came in later than their noise laws permitted. Old man Emery had to visit her personally to plead for her to reconsider. She eventually did. Later
  20. More Leyland on needing experience in a pennant race: "I don't think there's anything to that as far as, 'Well, this is their first time through it.' I don't buy that at all. Talent is talent. I'll take talent every time whether they've got experience or not." Later
  21. ]and then a little 'na, na, na, na, hey hey, hey, Goodbye' Nice, but that line cheapened the whole thing. I used to feel bad for Ernie Banks and for the family of Ken Hubbs. Slightly less bad for Billy Williams. But ever since Santo's heel-clicking, my feelings for the Cubs and ther fans has been "Fukk them and the goat they rode in on." Later
  22. Confirmed. Nats sign OF Luis Matos this morning. Marlon Byrd DFAed. Wonder if the Yanks will give him a try? At least he's a real centerfielder. Later
  23. The most successful interim starter was Terry Leach. Later
  24. Great KTE I wonder if Carlos got hit by the bat while standing near the batting cage? He's been one of their hottest hitters lately with (I think) three home runs. And, a fungo bat is smaller than most regular bats, with a much thinner handle. Later
