Having him bunt not only means that he isn't doing what he does best - hitting dingers, but if he gets on he clogs the bases. If you pinch run, it burns a player (or two) for later in the game. Over his career, Carlos has been a streak hitter. He's been hitting the ball hard. Let him keep his stroke, don't mess with what he's doing. They'll start falling in, and then he'll go on a tear/ be able to carry the team on his back for a while. Later
  2. (Ducking) Ty Wigginton? Later
  3. Here's a benefit of living up here in the suburbs - I picked up today's Daily News and it was the early edition. It didn't mention Hughes' game or the injury. How many pages did the NY editions devote to them? Later
  4. ="Edgy DC"]If the number two prospect in the game is starting for the most storied franchise, it's already as compelling a story as there is before the night even starts. As was asked on The Prisoner, "Who is Number 1?" Later
  5. SteveJRogers wrote: It makes sense, no matter how hard the Mets have seemed to try over the years (it's sad that a lot of people only think the Mets targeted the Latino audience once Omar became the GM), but that population generally gravitiates towards the Yankees because they've heard the Yankee name in their country. As in "Yanqui Go Home?" Later
  6. As I may have mentioned here before, Joe is listed as the author of the book "Baseball for Dummies". At the time, I said it must be autobiographical. I can't understand how a man who says he is against racial injustice, labels and insults can repeatedly use a slur that insults those less fortunate than himself - the disabled. I'll climb down off my soapbox now, so the thread can continue. Later
  7. ="MFS62"]I dunno. Just past observations over the years, nothing specific to point to. Seems that if a team is paying a guy a lot of money, they'd rather be spending it on a major leaguer. But your point about passing through waivers is well taken. From Today's Daily News: ]But even though nobody in the Met high command was ready to say Pelfrey is on trial again, he is fully aware there's a pennant race to be run here, and despite yesterday's proclamation, Randolph is not likely to give him much more time to turn it around. For one thing, Pelfrey has options. For another, Jorge Sosa, whom the Mets are paying $1.25 million to pitch at Triple-A, is 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA in four starts for New Orleans and has given up only one homer in 26 innings. Later

  9. Interesting about who would be brought up if Pelfrey isn't ready yet. Traditionally, teams have looked at the budget when making these decisions. And Sosa is making over $1 million, Park about half of that and Vargas probably less than that. Omar has shown that he doesn't do things the way other GMs do. But in this case, I'm predicting it would be Sosa brought up first. Its a nice problem to have, because if the others pitch well, they could become nice trade bait come the deadline. Later
  10. Is it too early to start listing most wins at the start of a career? Most consecutive scoreless innings? Joe Smith is off to a nice start on both lists. Later
  11. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2847416 Of course, they'll probably assign John Mitchell to investigate, so a decision to suspend Torii could come years after he retires. Later
  12. Hey, Seo. Next time you feel the urge to produce a graph, try this. Find the numbers. Generate it. Print it. Tape the printout to an anvil. Drop it on your PC. Later

  14. Have you noticed Jeter when the news shows clips of A-Rod's homers? He's been the first one to greet A-Rod after one of his homers, either at home plate or in front of the dugout. Last year, when A-Rod was having tough times, Jeter avoided him like he was a radioactive leper. "Oh Captain, Their Captain" is a front-running maggot, just like his fans. Later
  15. I was born in the same city where a famous old time commedian grew up. I took advanced Math and Science courses in College. I could explain the Physics of why a curve ball curves. But I could never throw a good one. Later

  17. Shit!I gave him a kannehorra (jinx). The kid took a size five collar last night. But he did steal his 7th base of the season.Later

"L'il" Al Jackson. My favorite all-time Met. Does this mean I get to ask one? "I was born in a city named after a Queen. An infielder, I was traded by the Mets and once hit 30 home runs for the team to which I was traded." Later
  19. Do they also lead the league in DPs? They seem to have turned a lot of those this year. Later
  20. ] left CF to play just in front of the grass behind 2B for the weak hitting pitcher Ryne Duren (he struck out). I remember that game. Even though "closers" (no such term then) pitched more than one inning in those days, I was wondering why Duren was batting. He had "coke bottle thick" glasses and if the opposing pitcher threw at Ryne's head, I doubted if he would have been able to see the ball in time to get out of the way. No wonder you said "weak hitting". Later
  21. Thanks, gnat. Josh Thole was signed as a catcher. How did he look around the bag at first? Pellot shows up on several lists of Mets prospects. He had terrible numbers last year and now he's batting ninth? Did he look like a prospect to you? And Durkin is closing? Has much been made about this in the local papers? Later
  22. They started him in AAA this year. As of a few days ago, he had at least one hit in every game this season(14 games) and was hitting .392. He has also been 6 for 7 in SB attempts.Later
  23. He is currently listed on the extended spring training roster as a pitcher.Later
  24. I guess IDRC. Later
  25. According to WFAN, that was Marco's eighth game winning hit in the majors. Maybe the A's have found the new "Captain Clutch"? Mike Francessa was in a state of disbelief. He kept lamenting how Marco had been hitting .050 before the hit. I loved it. EDIT: IIRC, after the Mets got rid of Marco, they acquired Joe McEwing as their utility player. Insert your own joke here. Later
