  2. Those of us who remember Chuck Hiller know he couldn't be any worse. Could he? But I'd personally keep him in left field. IMO that throw he made from foul territory the other night to keep the baserunner from scoring could only have been made by someone who had played third base. The usual left fielder would have taken a slpit second to set his feet or wind up before throwing. His 3B experience and arm is a plus on plays like that. Later

  7. CC got to the ball in plenty of time to throw the runner out. But he mishandled it. Error all the way. Later

  9. Wilmer celebrated his promotion to Brooklyn last night by going 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Flores, 17, while with Kingsport in his first professional season, had hit .310 with 8 home runs and 41 RBI in 59 games. He had signed with the Mets as a non-drafted free agent on his 16th birthday in 2007. Welcome to the Big Apple, kid. Later
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I'll gladly put my MVP support to whoever puts the Mets on his back and carries them through September. I'm with you on this one. I've posted before about how I fell that the "carrying the team on his back" thing is important to me when considering MVP. Recent guys who I felt fit that bill, but lost it to players with better "counting stats" were Vlad (forget who won that year)and Hidecki Matsui (who lost to a late season stats surge by Gary Sheffield). 11. Elster88 wrote: I hope he leaves, becomes a starter, and wins three straight Cy Youngs. Speaking of Aaron the starter - he threw 60 pitches. That's not too far from the number of pitches he might throw in a first test start. (Yeah, I know. It was in three innings. Don't dazzle me with logic, I'm on a roll) Why not give him the chance to start? Later
  12. AG/DC wrote: Interesting sidebar: Met-killer Pat Burrell batted third and went 0-7, fanning four times (I believe that's a sombrero) and leaving 10 guys on base. It used to be that three strikeouts was the sombrero and four was called the golden sombrero. Maybe that's changed. Later
  13. He mentioned that when Castro went down last night and was replaced by Schneider, Pedro started getting into trouble. He noted there were several pitches where Pedro shook him off, with bad results. Do you think the change made a difference? Later
  14. My impression is that Murph's early success was hitting to left field. In recent games, opposing scouts may have caught on, and other teams are pitching him and playing him to hit that way. It will be interesting to see how well he adjusts. Later

Was he signed for a one year contract? Or more? Later
  18. Wasn't the reason baseball and softball were going to be dropped because of US domination? Maybe this year will change their minds. Later
  19. On tonight's post game radio show, they said that Manuel wanted to take Santana out. But he said "As long as that little guy (Oswalt) is still out there, so am I". Manuel also criticized Santana for "not being economical with his pitches". Sounded like he wasn't too thrilled that Santana threw so many. Later
  20. The Yankees have announced that he will be their starting pitcher this Saturday. OK, so once everyone sees him, who will be the next missing person to be seen? Amelia Earhart? Jimmy Hoffa? Elvis? AND When he finally strides in from his bullpen warmups to take the mound, what music should be played? Money For Nothing? What would you suggest? Pardon me for being excited, but this opportunity comes around about as often as a Presidential election. Later
  21. Isn't jumping to conclusions the sport that's going to replace baseball in future Olympics? Later
  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Whenever I think of a sidearmer or submarinber, I think of Elias Sosa first. Who is your 1st association? Dick Hyde. And a pitcher for Washington (back in the day) named Marty Kutyna. He had a herky-jerky delivery which started out as a traditional windup but led to the ball being released somewhere between sidearm and submarine. EDIT: Just heard that the US team lost. I don't have any details yet, but I volunteer to go into their locker room and try to comfort them. Later
  23. Since the Mets gave them Anderson Hernandez, didn't they have to give them another player to even out the deal? Later
  24. Mole, the first time I heard the term was after the Met "Generation K" trio of Wilson, Isringhousen and Pulsipher experienced some arm problems. There was a concern that overworking a young pitcher could hurt their arms. So, pitch count limits were imposed. As for pitchers of that era, I remember Steve Carlton thrusting his arm into a bucket of rice toimprove arm strength. And I'm not sure if he was the pitcher who said (I paraphrase) " The muscles in the arm are like any other muscles - the more you exercise them the stronger they get". Pitcher Mike Marshall had a degree in Physiology, and was the first to pitch in over 100 games in a season. Of course, he didn't do that too many times. Later
  25. They try to pay a draftee less than the player drafted ahead of him, and more than the player drafted after him. I'm not sure if it is written, unwritten, or even legal. IIRC, the Mets caught a lot of flak from MLB in the past by paying one of their high draftees "over slot". So they played nice with the other kids (GMs) by paying in or below slot this year. Later
