  1. Paulino shut down because of a "blood disorder", not related to PEDs. Nickeas may be here longer than anyone thought. Later
  2. Thanks. Later
  3. Third place. The official over/ under is 79 games won. The optimist in me says over - 81 games. But the realist in me says under - I'm picking 78 games won. No Wild card. Later
  4. The Nats are building a fine collection of young pitchers on the DL, including their wunderkind (name escapes me). You can keep a player on the 60 day DL for an entire season, and he only has to be counted on the 40 man roster prior to the next year's Rule V Draft. But I'm not sure how that works with a prior year Rule V draftee as to whether he would have to stay with the club's 25 man roster for a full year next year. Later

    Barry Bonds

Scott Boras = Barry Gordy - lots of talent under control. Later
  6. I'm beginning to notice the emerging power of Josh Thole. Maybe he is now more comfortable with his receiving and can concentrate on his hitting a little more. I know, I know, its Spring Training. But three home runs? When he came up, it looked like he was going to be a high OBP kind of guy with little power. I likey. Later

Jackie Robinson was Nat "King" Cole, who broke down his own color barriers to become the first Black person to host a network TV show. Later
  8. Emaus hasn't exactly blown the other second base candidates out of the water. I'm wondering if settling in on him as the second baseman isn't just a case of JP and his Toronto guys trying to prove that they are just as good talent evaluators as Omar was supposed to have been. Later
  9. Derek Jeter couldn't get his picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone , so he did this. http://yanksgoyard.com/2011/03/15/jeter-on-the-cover-of-gq/ I can't wait to read the entire article. Maybe we'll find out which part of his new mansion he wants to eventually house the Derek Jeter Presidential Library. Later

  11. Box score sez a coupla' hits, including a double, three ribbies for Bay. I hope he will find his power stroke this year. Later
  12. He was either very good or very bad. And you never knew which he would be on a given day. Later

    Ollie

Wow! They released Ollie. Never saw that one coming. Later
  14. Ceetar wrote: but everyone started laughing at one point and rushed over from the other field to stare until Sean Ratiff rescued the snake and tossed it in the grass. How far did he toss it? Ratliff only had 2 outfield assists in about 125 minor league games last year, and I had questions about his arm. Later
  15. Sounds like you have a good view of the action, both on and off the field. Nice reports, some stuff we never read about (a top pitching prospect running balls out to the umps). Thanks, Later

    Ollie

Ashie62 wrote: Is anyone here going to be upset when/if Ollie leaves? Depends on how he leaves. If he can show enough so that he either doesn't have to leave (he can be productive in some role for the Mets), or if he can be traded for a productive player, I'd be ok with that. If he were to just be released, I'd be upset over the waste of resources that will yield nothing in return this year. Nothing against Ollie personally. I think in Accounting they call it opportunity cost. Later

  18. Of course, Castillo had nothing to do with those decisions. I never said that he tried to manipulate anything. There have always been scoring decisions that favor the home team. I'm just saying that I remember (the topic of the thread, right?) some obvious ones. Later
  19. I remember some very generous scoring decisions at home in 2009 on some of his 19 sac bunts. More than a few were attempts for a base hit. Turn a few of those into outs, and his BA might have dropped below .300. But alll in all, he wasn't as terrible as some major league regulars. Just not quite as good as we would have wanted him to be. Later
  20. Edgy DC wrote: It would be nice to see that crown on, say, Oscar Charleston before or after Cobb, or maybe Josh Gibson would have inherited the crown from Ruth if he had outlived him. As I've posted before, My father (RIP) watched baseball from the early 1920's through the 1990s. And he told me that Josh Gibson was the best he ever saw. Later
  21. I posted in another thread about Lius hitting a homer and limping around the bases after breaking his foot. You can't just look at numbers. As I mentioned, anybody who does that can play for my team any time. If Jeter had done that, forget the Hall of Fame. Some NY writers would be pushing for his inclusion on Mt. Rushmore. We hear/ read things about how TC has/ hasn't come out in favor of Luis. Those are sometimes followed by things like "Sandy and his front office are numbers guys". Alderson is an ex-Marine. While Luis may not fit Sandy's statistical model,I feel he certainly fits his model for the kind of player he would want, too. Later

    2011 Roster

He isn't a player, but Ray Ramirez is holding onto a long time porn stache tradition. Later
  23. I miss that strip in my local paper. It was one of my favorites. Later

  25. It might be nice if the Mets could prove, to themselves and the world, that they can beat the freakin' Braves in a game. Even in an exhibition game. They might find out they like it. Later
