  1. After stifling the urge to regurge over the selection of a "toolsy" high school position player in the first round, I began to re-think it. I'm feeling better about the first two picks. Sandy and staff aren't looking for a quick fix - players with college experience who might make the majors in a year or two and quickly make their drafting skills look good. They picked players who will need time to develop, and that shows me a commitment to building the organization and player development- a longer term approach. I like that. Later
  2. Thanks, Monk. Good job. And if any of the reporters write that the Mets might trade Reyes to the Brewers, we'll all know they heard it here first. Later

  5. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Meanwhile on a related topic, Bill Madden with about the worst piece of shit he's ever written this morning. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2011/06/06/2011-06-06_to_do_wright_by_david_club_should_do_him_a_favor__deal.html That reads like he wrote it before he even got out of bed this morning (while he was still jerkin' his gherkin to the picture of Jeter on his wall). Rating Madden columns is difficult, because its tough to tell the difference between worst shit and best shit. But I'd put this on the top 10 list, moving up fast, with a bullet. Later
  6. Every time I hear "toolsy high school hitter" I think "Shawn Abner". I know. I know. I should be thinking "Darryl Strawberry". But still ... Later
  7. Gee isn't just getting by on guile. IIRC he led the International League in strikeouts last year, and set a modern Buffalo Record in doing it. He has stuff, too. Later
  8. "Chipper" is an ancient Indian name that means "royal pain in the ass". I think its in the Chipper-wa language. Later
  9. How did Reyes not even make the top 10 of players "for this year"? He's near the top in the NL in hits, triples, steals, etc. etc. 'Tis a puzzlement. Later
  10. Marvelous Marv still has a place in my heart. Anyone who votes for the guy they got for Nolan Ryan should be banned forever from all things Metly. Later
  11. To quote the famous Pirate broadcaster Bob Prince, "We had 'em all the way". Later
  12. Edgy DC wrote: I'm kind of surprised to see him in the Sally League. A guy --- especially one with a college pedigree --- knocks down buildings in Brooklyn, I expect him to open in St. Lucie the next year. Savannah seems like a lateral move. I think this may have been a reaction to the flak the prior regime took for promoting some of their top prospects too quickly. That said, I expect he will be promoted to PSL after the SAL All-Star break. Later
  13. FK, your kid has been lighting it up this year. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=RF&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=519377 That OBP is off the charts. The questions I'd read about him concerned his ability to catch up to a real good fastball. He seems to have answered that question at this level. Can't wait to see if he can continue to do it once he gets promoted. Later
  14. I heard the question and his answer. He was asked (I paraphrase) "What are you going to do with your roster in the next couple of days?" He said that Buchholz was going on the DL. But, it seems like the question was asked because someone will have to go because Reyes will be coming back to the 25 man roster shortly. And the Buchholz move is one of those wink wink kinds of moves. Later
  15. Edgy DC wrote: Davis doesn't need to be sidelined for any of that to happen. Then where would Davis play if Duda plays first? Oh, you mean Duda in left? Later
  16. In case nobody here has heard yet, Lucas Duda had two dingers and a double for Buffalo tonight. (and two walks) If Davis is going to be sidelined for an extended period of time, I'd like to see Duda brought up to play first, Turner (and Murphy) at third, Tejada (or Turner) at second and Harris playing wherever guys who have been DFA'd play. Later
  17. Edgy has mentioned in another thread that the Mets acquired him for inclusion in the Benson trade, as the Pirates requested. Later
  18. Here's the scenario I want. Yanks down by a run, bottom of the ninth. Runners on first and third, two out, Jeter up. He hits a ball to the right side that hits the runner between first and second. The runner is called out, but, by rule he is credited with his 3,000th hit. Game over. Yankees lose! Yankees Lose! And the 3,000th hit carries that stigma(that it wasn't a clean hit). Forever. Later
  19. Ceetar wrote: Mora turned out to be just fine, maybe Murph will too. Well, he's proven he can hit ok. But can he father quintuplets? Later
  20. It was about Bob Bailey that a New York baseball writer (Dick Young? Leonard Schecter?) wrote: "On one hand he can't hit. On the other hand, he can't field, either." Later
  21. If I ever wanted to see if I could still pitch, I'd like to start against that Binghamton lineup. Come to think of it, that wouldn't tell me much. Wally must be going nuts down there. Later
  22. If the blimp was speaking drectly to him, I wonder if other people saw different messages. Later
  23. batmagadanleadoff wrote: It's a given that if Sterling gets hammered in the Picard lawsuit, the Wilpon/Katz group is a goner. The riveting issue is whether Wilpon/Katz can lose control of the Mets even with a favorable outcome in the Picard suit. If Sterling doesn't ultimately pay out more than their alleged fictitious profits from Madoff, are they then guaranteed to retain majority control of the Mets, or can they still lose the team? Any information or analysis on this front is what I find to be the most newsworthy. Fred's comments about Reyes and Crawford money and Wright's superstardom or lack thereof is just a side show. I can't wait for this to go to trial, so there will be a jury we can tamper with. Later
  24. Ashie62 wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: 14 hits, 3 Philly errors, 2 walks, 2 stolen bases (plus an advance on defensive indifference) and just 4 stinkin' runs. No Ike Davis, no David Wright. And a waste of genetic material in left field. Later
  25. I get fox stations from both New York and Connecticut. The Eastern part of Connecticut loves the Sawks. (As I've mentioned before, one station didn't always tell you Mets scores.) They might be carrying a different game up there. Later
