  2. Just missed on picking Harris for the first dinger. Later

He could afford better writers than the Yankees. Remember, Tressel's players are paid more than the Yankees. We now return you to the "Yanks are cheaters" theme of this thread. Later
  4. Question to Cashman: If you thought he might be damaged goods, then why did you sign him? And if you signed him because you felt he was healthy, then STFU. Later

The UMDB hasn't officially tracked the sequence of Mets. Each player has a unique number, but it's not strictly tied to their chronological order. (If there was a tiebreaker, though, it would be batting order.) My first reaction of two first timers entering a game for defense would be the order in which they were announced into the game by the PA announcer should be the tie breaker. But then I realized they would be announced in accordance with the batting order. But I'm not sure if a new pitcher is also coming into the game, if in some ballparks the announcer would mention the pitcher before the position players. Later
  6. Nothing compared to what used to happen when those teams both played in New York. Gimmie a break! There were no (reported) weapons involved. Later
  7. I'm hoping someone will jump up and yell "April Fool" and the season will really start tomorrow. Later
  8. Call the Observatory! We've discovered a new Black Hole. And this one really sucks. Wow! That was awful. Later

  11. Does Chin-Lung Hu make this team? Later EDIT: If we start showing prominent lungs, this thread could become an all-time favorite pretty soon.
  12. IIRC, George Foster had a prominent chin. Later
  13. OK, I'll admit it. When I read his last name I thought we'd have to be really careful how to pronounce it. Later
  14. I'll take Cincy in July, Alex. You might even get a Daily Double. Later
  15. Mets Worrisome Things 2011 Will Cris Youngs arm be constantly smitten? And not playing the kids makes us so mad that were spittin. Will we get the bad Reyes or the one from this Spring? Those are a few of my worrisome things. Will David Wright drive in runs by the oodles? Will Santanas fixed arm be as limp as a noodle? Will they get any power from the two outfield wings? Those are a few of my worrisome things. Will young Ike Davis improve as a hitter? And will unforseen injuries dump the year in the shitter? Will Jason Bays bad ribs still hurt when he swings? Those are a few of my worrisome things. But if they can resolve just a few of those things Then they wont do so bad Later
  16. Balance - in the rotation, in the bullpen, in the lineup. The result will be better than the sum of its parts. Later
  17. I'm worried that they will try to ease Beltran into the lineup by putting Duda in right field a lot. This will expose his arm and they will trade him to another team, where he will become a .285 - 35- 110 player. He is a left fielder or first baseman. Only I'm worried that all of the top minor league outfield prospects are lefty batters (Duda, Martinez, Capt. Kirk, Ratliff). I'm worried that Paulino's "blood Problem" will be more serious than we think, and the team lacks a competent righty hitting catcher to ease Thole's work load. Later
  18. Many of the projections I've read about Wilmer changing positions have been based on his size - listed as 6'3" and 185 pounds. The writers anticipate that he will add weight to his frame, limiting his range and quickness. But he hasn't added that weight yet. It will be interesting to see if he stays at short if he keeps the weight off. Later
  19. Governor David Pattterson was the host on WFAN tonight. He was quite good. He showed enough to prove he is more than a casual baseball fan in his interview with Chris Young. They spent time on Chris' career before joining the Mets, his injury, his rehab and several minutes on Young's Senior thesis about Jackie Robinson. One funny comment - Patterson said (I paraphrase) "I don't know if I should interview a Princeton grad, since I went to Columbia." Young replied, "That's OK. Ivy Leaguers have to stick together." It was a fun listen during my drive home. Later

  23. This was actually done. When Bill Veeck took over the St. Louis Browns, he put the entire team on waivers. Later
  24. IMO, Murray Chass is bitter they way Dan Daniel was bitter. After many years covering the Yankees for the New York Times, he became to reporter who covered the Mets. His columns, which also appeared in The Sporting News, were full of Yankee news (e.g. - "they wanted Jim Hickman for their minor league system"). Each week, there were no pictures of Mets players in TSN, only the same head shot of George Weiss. I wrote a hand-written note to J.G. Taylor Spink, editor/owner of TSN, pointing this out, and asking for some real news about the team we would be watching, not the one the reporter was used to covering. I guess enough people complained (or Spink actually read what Daniel was writing). After 13 weeks, and a personal reply from Spink, Daniel was no longer the Mets writer for TSN. Unfortunately, this is Chass' own blog. There is no higher authority to whom we can complain. Damn you new technology! Later
