  1. The only thing better would have been Jeter commiting a ninth inning error to pin the loss on Mariano. But I'll take this. Now my fellow Munchkins, let's all join hands and sing: DING DONG, THE BITCH IS DEAD. Later
  2. My wife just saw the picture of Jose and said she'd like to see CC Sabathia posed the same way. Later

For a while I didn't know who he was, because there was a total absence of his normal schtik. No funny names, no "back back back"- kinds of stuff. He actually was not bad - followed the action and told us what was happening. Only one unclear call -a double off the wall - I couldn't tell for a while if it hit the wall or was caught because he was describing the attempt for the catch. But he got it right immediately. Back to topic - I just heard from my Lawyer. We never gave ESPN the right to photoshop Reyes' head onto a picture of my body*. We're going to sue. Later *= Kase has met me and can confirm that I am a magnificent physical speci .... , OK, just joking.
  4. Where's Fmann when we need him? This is crying out for his post. Later
  5. EDIT: Gwreck beat me to it. Later
  6. Thanks. Later

  8. Ben, you hit a grand slam. Great job. Later
  9. I listened to the middle part of the game while driving home and didn't see either of the catches mentioned in this thread. How good were they? Good? Very Good? Or Agee/ Swoboda good? Later
  10. Any word on the recovery/ progress of Chris Young? Is he still under the control of the Mets? Baseball-reference doesn't tell us the length of the contract he signed with the Mets. If healthy, he might be the best option of all. Then again, "if healthy" has been mentioned in the same sentence as his name for years. Later.
  11. Frayed Knot wrote: The use of "Downtown" in basketball - whoever coined it - way pre-dated the three-point line. I guess it's MFS's contention that Sterling was using it in NYC before Marv even though it was he who eventually became more famous for it. On that burning question I have nothing to contribute. I was a fan of the ABA from its first game. Another announcer of their games (the Spirit of St Louis and later their national tv games) was Bob Costas. I don't recall he ever used the term. Of course, the NBA did not have the three point shot until the leagues merged. So there would have been no need for Marv to use it. But Sterling had been using the term on Nets broadcasts for years. Since they both were in New York at the time, I believe Marv must have heard Sterling use it and later adopted it as his own. Later
  12. Two out, two on in top of the ninth. Jeter up. Later
  13. Ashie62 wrote: Sonny Dove of the Johnnies hits for three putting the Nets up double digits! I can still hear him call that. LOL! Sterling coined the expression "downtown" for a 3 point shot. Marv Albert "stole" it and it became one of his trademark calls. We now return this thread to the topic of how really bad an announcer Hagin is. Later

That's like when ABC exclusively telecast the saturday college football games in the 60s. When the SMU Mustangs were playing, Keith Jackson called them the "ponies" because the sponsor was GM. We now return you to the game .... Later

Great article. I love John Sterling, nobody alive is better suited to chronicle the pomposity of MFY Universe than him. And I kinda appreciate his underlying goofiness. Seriously, I can't listen to a second of Michael Kay call a MFY game but I always tune in Sterling. Exactly. I've liked Sterling from the days he used to broadcast Nets games when they played in the ABA. Nobody says you can't both call a decent game and have a distinct personality. Baseball fans have appreciated that for years, from Dizzy Dean to Bob Prince to Red Barber to Bob Uecker. The list goes on. But, to be loved for the second, you have to be able to do the first. And Hagin doesn't. Later
  16. My bad. And to think I was saving myself for the playoffs. Later
  17. I demand a recount. Looks like my 4-0 in games 7/25- 7/28 takes the trophy. And if I won it by sitting on my arse, tough. Later
  18. A gapper off the bat of Van Slyke and he cruises into second for a double. Can't we ever get this guy out? Later
  19. Lots of hard work. Thanks. Looks like the first series against the Reds the only 4 game sweep of the year. Did I miss another? Later
  20. A normal MFY game seems endless without a rain delay. Get yourselves ready for Breakfast with Suzyn. Later
  21. Maybe the WFAN-atics were right, and the Mets should have traded for Kelly Shoppach. Fman, you are destined to a life of torture. You aren't getting rid of Wayne Hagin that easily. Later

But for the life of me I still can't figure out who will, with less than four hours remaining, start my Happy Birthday thread. (Does that answer that question?) Later I'll wish you a happy one here and now then, as I may gorge myself to death on the buffet at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas in about 20 minutes. Reyes' 7 didn't come up the entire hour I played Roulette. depressing. Thank you. Later

  25. Elster88 wrote: A lot of swagger up there about the four major sports titles in seven years. I don't believe much in karma but this was ridiculous. Only the pre-2004 Red Sox could lose like this. Most of the bandwagoners have no idea that the Red Sox went eight decades without a title and that the Patriots were a joke before Parcells. And the latter includes my ladyfriend who started watching in the Bledsoe years. Actually most Boston bandwagoners don't know anything before Brady. But this is the Red Sox type of day I grew up reading about in the papers. Oh, here's a little something for the Connecticut tv sportscasters who give us 3-5 minutes of Red Sox coverage, 1-2 minutes of Yankee coverage, then don't even give the Mets score. One guy , the lead sports anchor on a major NBC affilliate in Connecticut, when asked by the news anchor for the score of the Mets game, said "Oh. Did they play? I'll have to get back to you later." FUCK YOU! Later
