  2. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I don't care at all about hats on plaques. So dumb! The real challenge is getting the guys' face right. In the case of Joe Torre, I'm not sure they will want to be all that accurate. Later
  3. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Best name for a pitcher since "Bob Walk". And all those pitchers named "Homer". Later
  4. Edgy MD wrote: I don't think he profiles like Irabu. More like Halladay, I think, or Maddux. Coming off a 24-0 season and working on a 26-game winning streak... that's no joke. His ERAs the last few years... 1.27, 1.87, 1.27. That's not a bag of Goldfish crackers. To paraphrase an old baseball joke, we should sign the guys who were able to hit him. Later
  5. When I saw the thread title, I thought it was about the opera singer who will sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. But then I realized that would be in the non-baseball forum. What's next for baseball? Body cavity searches? Later

The Yankees are giving Tanaka an anti-aircraft vehicle? The North Koreans must be a bigger threat than we thought. I believe that in A-Rod's case , it stood for "antisocial asshole value". Later
  7. I hope Tanaka means "Clone of Irabu". Later
  8. I like Eddie C from the days of the "Cole-man ans Soul-man" show (with Dave Simms?) on WFAN. He did the Mets report and Suzyn Waldmann did the Yankee report. She would give interesting updates - clubhouse happenings, trade rumors and even reports on some minor leaguers. Ed was on with Massive Mike and the Cretinous Canine. The wouldn't let him do his job. The comments were "Hey Eddie, how's the hotel bar, har har har", "Hey Eddie, the (newborn) twins keeping you up all night? har har har" He never got around to talking about the Mets. I felt he would have done that if given the chance. Later, he must have grown a set of balls, said something, and they let him report on the Mets. He did a respectable job at it. Later

  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: What do they mean by "Timing Play" and "Record Keeping"? To me, 1) "timing play" is about whether a runner leaves a base too early after a catch. 2) "record keeping"? I dunno. But it could mean taking another look at official scorers' decisions(hit/error). If so, I doubt any manager would waste his one appeal on this one unless it meant a no-hitter or hitting streak for one of his players. Later
  11. ... and then, the dog ate Derek's homework. Later
  12. Will they still have enough money to sign that Japanese pitcher (Tanaka?), or does this mean the path has been eased for the MFYs to get him? Hoping this deal will be Zito-like, but worse. Later
  13. The Baseball Almanac 2014 edition is out. It names Montero as the team's minor league player of the year (not to be confused with best prospect). Is that their pick, or have the Mets named one yet? Later
  14. The 2014 Baseball Almanac just came out, and BA says Montero was the organization's minor league player of the year. Don't know if that is their take, or if this the official decision. Later
  15. I feel bad for Allan Dykstra. Later
  16. I can hardly wait to see how this plays out. Later
  17. He'll probably take it to Federal Court. And, since he never FAILED a drug test, I think he'll win. And when the evidence comes out that MLB bought their "proof", I think anything that followed will be declared "fruit of a poisoned tree"* and the case will be dismissed. Its not against the law to lie to your boss. Later * = cases get thrown out when the charge is based on illegally obtained evidence.
  18. Frayed Knot wrote: Ceetar wrote: Team X (2014) -- probably minimum wage or something close to it Seems doubtful that he'd be able to snag a starting job although yaneverknow. If not he wouldn't be a bad guy to take a flyer on as a bench/PH. He's pretty slow these days but can still play either 1B or a corner OF spot when needed with a minimum of casualties expected. Yes, once the waiting time for his DFA clears (48 hours?) any team can sign him for as little as the major league minimum. And the other contracts in force must pick up the remainder of their obligations to him. But I'm thinking there will be enough GMs who think he may have something left in his tank that the bidding will go higher than that. Not much. maybe, but higher. If the price stays reasonable, I think he's worth a look-see. If they cut him, the other contracts in force kick back in. Later
  19. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Gooden and Valenzuela are the pitchers that come immediately to mind when I think of the top pitchers from the time period between Blyleven and Maddux. And of course, Jack Morris has been discussed a lot lately. Who else? Here are some recent pitchers who are not in the Hall. None of them ever won a Cy Young Award. The list is in decending fWAR order. From what I read about it, fWAR is a good way of evaluating pitchers, based on some Fangraphs metrics. Still struggling to understand it. Mike Mussina Curt Schilling Kevin Brown Rick Reuschel Luis Tiant Tommy John Andy Pettitte Frank Tanana Jerry Koosman Dave Stieb Kevin Appier David Wells Wilbur Wood Jamie Moyer Later
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: It does seem unlikely that there would be much of a black market for Hall-of-Fame votes. What about Mets fans buying ballots on the black market to protect Seaver's percent-of-vote record when Jeter and Rivera become eligible? Later
  21. Thank you for posting that. Lovely tribute. Semper Fi. Later
  22. instead of Ed Kranepool, what would the name of this forum have been? OE: I put in the word "instead" to put it into time perspective. The Mets acquired Staub long after 1961. Later
