  1. I agree, and wouldn't want to strip the organization of the top three prospects PLUS. You can't measure the incremental benefit of making that deal over just keeping those three, at least one of whom might become a multi-generational player. This isn't like those multi-player+ draft pick Herschel Walker-type NFL trades. I'm guessing there is a greater likelihood that a team could replenish organizational talent faster in the NFL draft than in baseball. And if the move doesn't bring near term success, it could set the organization back several years. And then the other part of my Libra brain kicks in and I think about how many "can't miss" prospects turn out as good as the scouts, and fans, predict. Remember the anguish when the Mets traded Jared Kelenic? His stock has gone down faster than a hooker at a bachelor party. * Is it worth it? I dunno. I can be firmly convinced either way, but tend on the "no" side. Later *- I really didn't want to post here, but had this need to use that analogy about Kelenic.
  2. After seeing Phil Rizzuto, listed at 5'6", play shortstop I'm OK with him. But when I read that he has "good pop" I had a flashback to the Baseball Digest Rookie Report (remember them?) that said Bud Harrelson had "good power for a shortstop", and laughed. Later

Ask him if Carpenter's success is because: 1) American League pitching sucks, or 2) He plays in a bandbox, or 3) both Then add: His improvement is more dramatic than Paul O'Neill's, but probably without the steroids. 4. =bmfc1 post_id=99968 time=1657989336 user_id=73] Mauricio/Baty or Vientos/Peterson/Megill to start for either. WSH would want the other team to take Corbin off their hands.
  5. We haven't had a good old fashioned WATP thread in a long time. And what we would have to give up for Tout AND Ohtani qualifies as WA. and I don't think the current crop of prospects (and I wouldn't include Alvarez)would be enough. The organization is too shallow. Later
  6. all of the information I was keeping them for was in Baseball-reference.com. Obviously, not "all." Read the complete sentence, "all of the information I was keeping them for". I was trying to help. Later
  7. =roger_that post_id=99896 time=1657918052 user_id=128] Thanks, but I'm hoping to find a site that tracks with OCD precision every single roster change, and the dates, of every MLB team, or at least the Mets. Sort of like the Transactions part of BB-ref, which tracks only trades, FA signings, releases and the like. I want one, preferably run by a crew of anal-retentives, that traces every minute adjustment that teams (or the Mets) have ever made. From reading the CPF, I can easily imagine the controversies, speculations, arguments, discussions, that accompanied each one at the time.
  8. Under the rules at the time, first year players had to be retained on the major league roster or be exposed to the draft at the end of the year. You were allowed to option one other player. IIRC, they kept Kranepool in the majors, optioned Cleon Jones, and lost Paul Blair in the draft. Not sure what happened to the three other first year players they signed, but did not keep. Later
  9. There's a to-do now since one of the players said "I'd have gotten the shot for a contender". And management is pissed - BIG time. Here's the comment, reprinted from USA Today: https://sports.yahoo.com/royals-unvaccinated-mess-shows-mlb-180704628.htmlhttps://sports.yahoo.com/royals-unvaccinated-mess-shows-mlb-180704628.html I read the response this morning, looked for the link and it has since been taken down. Later
  10. When I see Alvarez' slow start I keep reminding myself that Willie Mays started out something like 0-24 before he got his first major league hit. And I don't panic. As Murph used to say, the cream always rises to the top. Later
  11. =G-Fafif post_id=99566 time=1657730574 user_id=55] Jays determine it's now or never, name bench coach John Schneider as interim manager.
  12. The Cyclones scored 9 runs today on 12 hits - none of them by prospect Alex Ramirez. He went 0-5 with 3Ks and is hitting .154 since his promotion from St. Lucie. Later
  13. =roger_that post_id=99653 time=1657749924 user_id=128] It's purely a win-win. I don't get why teams are so reluctant to make the best of a short-term injury to give some high-performing kid a taste of MLB.
  14. Everything's up to date in Kansas City.* Except for shot records. Later * that's my third old song reference this week. OY!
  15. I know. It's a running joke. I keep saying they're the same and you keep correcting me. But that's really my only memory of him. Nobody should leave us memory-less. Later
  16. He's still here, pitching under the name of Drew Smith. They are the same guy, aren't they? He didn't deserve to be cut based on his last outing. Later
  17. Add-on runs are nice. Later
  18. Ruh Roh! Later
  19. There's a lot of talent on the Jays roster and their fans (and some baseball mags)had high expectations coming into this season. Later
  20. Young & casual fans are more likely to become avid fans because they have interest in the celebrity, interests or backstories of individual players; for a lot of us, it was because of our interest in a team, and so, its important for baseball to amplify those aspects in how it positions itself to attract fans That approach was successfully used by Wild World of Sports, and got many fans interested in players, and sports, they hadn't thought much of before. Will it be successful with baseball? Will it turn viewers into statistics keeping, jersey wearing rabid fans? Who knows? But it is worth a shot. Later
  21. 0-0 End of one. Peterson struck out the side. Later
  22. And I bet if you walked into a dealership in any of those states and asked them to show you proof of their "tri-state" membership, they'd change the subject. And, Boston, keep your mitts off of Rhode Island! They're part of our (Eastern) CT tri-state. Later
  23. Scouts have to be able to look inside the person to see the true value. My favorite baseball scouting report - on Barry Bonds; "He will make a great major leaguer for the team that drafts him. And I hope to G-d it isn't us". Favorite all time: A talent scout about Fred Astaire; "Can't act. Can't sing. Can dance a little". Later
  24. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: "If he tries, we can maybe say, he's 5-foot-11," ... but in reality, he's "maybe" 5-foot-10. Willie Mays was 5'10". I hope the kid hits 4 homers in the next game he plays in front of scouts. Later
  25. Lefty Specialist wrote: For some reason, cars sold to tri-state residents to make Home Depot runs or buy groceries are continually shown doing high-speed donuts in the desert. That use of "tri-state" ticks me off. If you go into a NY dealership and ask him the states in his tri-state, they'll probably say NY, NJ, CT. If you go into one in Western CT and ask the same, they'll probably say CT, NY , Mass. ( In Eastern CT, it might be CT,RI, Mass.) C'mon NY dealers. Which Tr-state association are you in? Of course, it is all BS. The IS no "tri-state" association of dealers. They're too cheap to have individual state commercials, so they made that stuff up to save money (and to make you think they're part of something big). Poor babies. Someone please buy them a security blanket. feh! Later
