Is he actually better than Taylor? Tyrone has a 0.8 WAR this year despite never hitting. Mullins has 0.1 with basically league-average offense (105 OPS+). Mullins is showing as dead last on the CF leaderboard with -13 Defensive runs saved. Taylor is #7 overall.

He’s good. This is his 4th excellent year in a row. From the Athletic: “Helsley had posted a 3.00 ERA over 36 games (21 saves), with 41 strikeouts in 36 innings. Helsley’s fastball ranks in the 99th percentile in average velocity (99.3 miles per hour). Both his chase rate and whiff rates are over 30 percent and he’s struck out roughly a quarter of his total batters faced this year.”

Gilbert turns 25 in September and is now in his second year at AAA, with a .785 OPS in 81 games. He probably could be in the majors now or next year. He is subject to the Rule 5 draft in the offseason too if he’s not added to the 40 man roster.

That’s a hefty price for a guy who’s a FA at the end of the year.

Not quite a FA. He comes with team options for 2026 and 2027, at $20M each year.

I wouldn’t call it a salary dump — it’s a couple months left on a $4M annual contract — basically a rounding error for the Mets. It’s more that he’s going to time out from his rehab assignment and thus the Mets have to activate or release him, so they’re trying to grab any value they can for him.

Forget any on-field qualms that may exist with what he’s done to the game, Manfred is the guy who said that lockouts at the end of CBA terms should be the “new norm” and that they are a “positive.” And now he’s going around telling players how they would have supposedly made more money with a salary cap. Maybe there’s more to it but that just doesn’t seem like a guy who’s operating in good faith.
