  1. Citi Field: A nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to lose there. One of the few highlights was running into Swan Swan H in the Promenade food court before first pitch. It didn't take long for us to exhume the ghosts of Glavine and Stone, to name two ex-Braves. Man, we Mets fans are cheery people.
  2. What exactly does Vasgersian think he's bringing to the table with that remark? The silent "we hope he's OK" pause from the announcers kind of said it all regarding what they were watching. But he's got a nice voice, which I guess explains his anchor role.
  3. Why isn't Santos batting cleanup? --New York Mets fan who overreacts to every new toy
  4. I find it offensive that anyone would insert a football reference into a baseball clip.
  5. Was saying "Buffalo" last night while at the game when Murphy and LF came up. This is no place to learn his craft. I could deal with some combination of Sheffield (who's stinging the ball) and Reed in left while Daniel gets the hang of fly balls that don't count in the NL standings.
  6. I adore George Vecsey but this is insipid piling on, indeed. He was present at the creation of the Mets, a time when they were not to be taken seriously and I don't think he can believe anyone does see them as more than a lovable sideshow.
  7. I believe this poll was spurred by a piece I wrote last Flashback Friday[/url:1pvgrw1x] hoping all seven banners would be restored to some place of prominence. Given that the Mets have the precedent, I'd indeed like to see '88, '99 and '06 honored as they were at Shea. I particularly liked the '99 banner not just from a personal affinity for that season but because it would have seemed self-denying to not acknowledge on a going basis the events that gave us Pratt and Ventura (in particular) just because "WILD CARD & NLDS" was a little unwieldy. I'm a big fan of stuff that undeservedly falls down the memory hole. If we confine "history" to the pennant-winning years, more and more it is forgotten what a big deal, in their time, the years they just missed the World Series were. A nice marker signifying that yes, on these approximate grounds massive crowds gathered to cheer extracurricular baseball feats seems plenty appropriate and reasonably dignified. I can't see burying 1988, 1999 and 2006 just because they didn't go quite as far as 1969, 1973, 1986 and 2000. As i wrote last Friday, the most you can ask out of any regular season is to facilitate a postseason. All seven seasons did that. Long may they wave.
  8. His big moment came (if I'm not mistaken) on a Game of the Week, thus enabling his motion picture work as he had become a coast-to-coast star.
  9. Whitey Ford does everything from the goodness of his heart for the benefit of the community.
  10. I seem to recall Tom Seaver's Jacksonville roommate (or his ghostlike presence) coming up a while back. Keith Olbermann is on the case here[/url:3rmierkv]. He mentions a non-playing callup and someone with the program to prove it. No number cited there or on MBTN. What the Huck?
  11. Yes, but as Jason my partner has discovered, Johan can do it all...literally[/url:39tcllok], it turns out.

  14. Nick Johnson, the last extant Expo in Washington, I think.
  15. God called. Said he's flattered by the comparison, but he's no Johan.
  16. Edgy Knows Knats better than most Knats fans, I suspect.
  17. Once you've secured "FAFIF" (and, for that matter, "MBTN") for your baseball library, I can recommend Darling's book heartily. Great stuff on Ron Hodges in there, which isn't something every book can say. Picked up "After a Many Summer" by Robert Murphy (not be confused with Bob), on the departures of the Giants and Dodgers, thus the birth of the Mets, yesterday. Very promising.

  19. No more amenities for the players. Take a bus back to New York, boys.
  20. It is great people care this much. I doubt they listen to it. Now to get the passion of the players to match the passion of the fans.
  21. ="John Cougar Lunchbucket":14ynr1l1]Yes, a return of good baseball to Pittsburgh would be a boon to the US of A. So would a new album from Donnie Iris.[/quote:14ynr1l1] LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Apr 23 2009 01:28 PM ="Edgy DC"]I don't think the Pirates are paid for being bad. For being one of the league's lowest-revenue teams = "bad" at generating revenue (an indirect result of the on-field brand of badness) ="Edgy DC"]There may be ways to fix the imbalance and there may not be. But my point was that an imbalance exists. The point with which I took issue was that you said that the system was built to do that. That problem ain't the revenue-sharing deal-- that's capitalism. The next thing you'll tell me is that increasingly-extreme resource gaps between haves and have-nots is BAD for a social or economic collective. But we've gotten away from the real point here... which is that I would really like to have a free Homestead Grays cap with my paid admission of 5 dollars. http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/schedule/promotions.jsp?c_id=pit Edgy DC Apr 23 2009 01:34 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Apr 23 2009 01:38 PM ="LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr"]The point with which I took issue was that you said that the system was built to do that. That problem ain't the revenue-sharing deal-- that's capitalism. You brought up the revenue sharing deal. I didn't. No that isn't capitalism. Capitalism would allow teams to move wherever they want and compete directly for the markets they want. The protection that the teams have for their marketplaces is anti-competitive to the core. That's the next thing I'm telling you. Nymr83 Apr 23 2009 01:34 PM they have alot of good giveaways. Nymr83 Apr 23 2009 01:36 PM ="Edgy DC":22dwilgs]No that isn't capitalism. [/quote:22dwilgs] that is certainly true, which is not to say its good or bad "for the game", but it should justify the revenue sharing to anyone not named Steinbrenner. Gotcha... and agreed. Now tell me you wouldn't want a gratis 1979 Pirates pillbox hat on the same night as the Dollar Dog Special. Edgy DC Apr 23 2009 01:48 PM I think we should have a forum meetup at PNC that night. Nymr83 Apr 23 2009 01:50 PM is it a weekend? that hat is pretty cool and its $1 hotdog night to boot (do you think they have kosher food in pittsburgh?) LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Apr 23 2009 03:11 PM It appears to be Friday, August 21st. (Although Saturday night of "1979 Celebration Weekend" includes a postgame KC and the Sunshine Band show-- I'm guessing Capt. FAFIF would approve, although he'd probably prefer the Knack or something-- and something called "Scratch N' Win Saturday." So, you know. There's that.)

  24. ="Benjamin Grimm":2uahya2m]Do they still have a grey road jersey? And if so, does that say Mets or NEW YORK? I was out of town and missed the entire season-opening road trip.[/quote:2uahya2m] Yes. That's all they wore the first trip. Fman99 Apr 22 2009 12:28 PM I am mostly indifferent on the color schemes -- I don't loathe the black hats and jerseys the way some do. I still prefer home whites/pinstripes, and road grays, but whatever. It actually bothers me more to see them wearing "Mets" on the road instead of the "New York" in the traditional font. I liked the continuity of that - that they wore the city's name when they weren't in NY and "Mets" at home, regardless of colors. Ah well. I will also confess that I didn't notice it during play last night. TransMonk Apr 22 2009 12:28 PM ="G-Fafif"]="Benjamin Grimm"]Do they still have a grey road jersey? 25. Today, 39 years ago, Tom Seaver retired 10 consecutive Padres via the strikeout, 19 K'd Friars in all. Best. Earth. Day. Ever.
