  1. ="Edgy DC":3b58wum5]I find that the bigger issue is teams generally trying to copy the ballpark experience from each other, as if they don't believe the typical fan gets out to other ballparks and realizes "Rock and Roll Part II" is crammed down your throat no matter what your favorite team.[/quote:3b58wum5] "R&R Part II" completely absent from the CF experience. I noticed that when it was used at Shea in the last year or two, it was The Glitter Band's version. I guess they want to keep Gary's influence to a minimum so close to Kiddie Field. Edgy DC May 28 2009 12:23 PM That was more of a specific issue over the last 10-15 years. I mean to speak more generally even as I make a specific citation. Hopefully teams are waking up to the notion that residuals from public performances of Glitter's records have fed his international crime spree. Centerfield May 28 2009 12:27 PM Dear Mets, please ignore the unwarranted grumbling from my fellow fans who don't know how to have a good time. They hate life and everything that is fun. Like the B-52's. I think Sweet Caroline is a riot. I'm going to continue to sing it and not worry about what anyone thinks. Along that line, I have some other suggestions as well: 1. Throw back HR balls hit by opposing players. 2. Play Sinatra's "New York, New York" after wins. 3. Put up a meter counting the number of HR's hit into McCovey Cove. 4. Day-O!!! 5. Throw an octopus on the field before playoff games. By the way, I love the unique configuration of the outfield wall. Not knowing whether a ball was a HR for six minutes? Absolute blast! HahnSolo May 28 2009 12:28 PM No one can convince me that we need an 8th-inning sing-along. The MFYs responded with Sinatra's, which was released as a single that year. The Mets occasionally dabbled in Frank as well. If you watch the '86 WS on DVD, you will notice it as part of a stream of New York songs played between innings, including "Autumn in New York". metirish May 28 2009 12:45 PM ="Fman99"]="Centerfield"]Dear Mets, please ignore the unwarranted grumbling from my fellow fans who don't know how to have a good time. After a review I agree Benjamin Grimm May 28 2009 12:45 PM I seem to remember them playing "Kool and the Gang" after wins in the 1980's. I think that was playing after Game 6, but I'm not sure. When I hear that song though (which is seldom anymore) I do flash back to Mookie and Buckner, although I may be conflating. The fiancee and I were arguing over whether Old Man Sheff chose it himself, or had one of his nephews help. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 28 2009 03:54 PM ="metirish"] Off days are great around here for bitching about stuff. Also, for actually writing letters. Using Gwreck's piece as a jump-off, I just scribbled out my own "Caroline Ain't Sweet, She's a Flippin' Hoo-er!" missive, and sent it using the real-world mails. Join us, won't you? holychicken May 28 2009 05:39 PM Isn't the italian song that goes chee-na loo-na men-su mur-ay advocado lotsa pasta fila dough-a is a good-eh mama mia blah blah blah ,or whatever the hell it is they say, good enough?
  2. SNY showing Buffalo vs. Lehigh Valley this afternoon (and repeating it tonight and tomorrow during the day). What a depressing sight. A fog sits over Coca-Cola Field. There are about 21 people there and both teams are filled with ex-Mets, including David Newhan and Miguel Cairo for the Ironpigs and, well, nearly everybody for the Bisons. The announcers are selling the shortstopping abilities of Argenis Reyes hard, though Ken Oberkfell in mid-game chat mentioned he doesn't really have the arm for SS on the big league level. Figueroa's pitching, Cancel's catching, other team's rejects including Cory Sullivan, Mike Lamb and Wily Mo Pena are making the scene. Hard to believe this is technically the JV for the red-hot Mets-Phillies rivalry. [i do like the announcers saying "The Pigs are leading 2-0," as if making a judgment on their characters.] On the other hand, it's live baseball in the middle of a Thursday and it is distracting to those of us who are prone to that sort of thing.
  3. Umps follow a very precise process[/url:6apdbkcr] to reach the most accurate conclusion possible.
  4. ]'Fuck tubs'. Love it. Had no idea there was an actual term for those... A similar phrase I learned thanks to The Onion calendar revealed here.
  5. ="Fman99"]Still trying to convince the wife to get fuck-tubs for the backyard. Now that sounds like the first line from an ad for Home Depot.
  6. bmfc sticking it to Chico on his own turf...burn! Chico uses position numbers instead of abbreviations because he loves baseball that much.
  7. ="seawolf17":6z98j76k]="G-Fafif":6z98j76k]blown-up Topps cards, one Met per year[/quote:6z98j76k] Seriously? I need photographs, people. Photographs! Inspiration for the baseball card room![/quote:6z98j76k] Suite me and I'll photograph my and Lenny Dykstra's head off.
  8. The Mets keep their memorabilia in their basement rumpus room. Did somebody insist "you're not putting that baseball crap of yours in my precious living room"? When one enters through the Rotunda and takes the escalator to field level, one can peek into the suite area concourse and glimpse a few of the blown-up Topps cards, one Met per year, that are there for the suite people to enjoy and tell you about if you bump into them on their way to their luxury cars afterwards. At PNC, FYI, there is a veritable courtyard of blown-up Topps cards of Pirates through the years. All are invited to look at them.

    Club 99

El Sid denied entrance with 98 wins. Delgado hopefully gets that hundredth double by October 4.
  10. I always gave Judge Sotomayor major credit for ending the strike of '95, but by doing so she allowed the MFYs to kick off that stretch of thirteen consecutive playoff appearances encompassing that annoying dynasty. The players might have been doing us a favor striking in '94, rendering the MFYs' stay in first place moot. I suppose there are other legal issues to be considered when choosing a Supreme Court justice, but MFYLD-baggery is troubling in the eyes of the law.
  11. Yesterday was the first of six consecutive dates that had a Flushing Flash discount component available (first come/first served, buy in advance), indicating they had more inventory than planned for the Nats and Fish. If you subscribe to the Mets' e-newsletter, you could get the $69 seats for $47; same for tonight and tomorrow, all "value" dates. The $69 seats of Monday-Wednesday which become $92 on Friday for "bronze" seating are discounted to $64. Come Sunday, a "silver" date, they are reduced from $115 to $80. Some other seating areas have this "deal" as well. For a single baseball game. I'm not sure how the screw-you-over fees play into it. I do know they announced their highest attendance since Opening Night last night, though the place didn't seem particularly jammed. Details here[/url:3aujeem1].
  12. I was in a bar/restaurant as the MFY game wound down yesterday. Several TVs had it on, several didn't. It didn't seem to be obsessing the room. I wasn't watching it with intense interest either, just keeping an eye on it as the missus and I were capping off a moderate to grand day out, reflexively rooting against the home team, sorry the visitors were losing even as we normally despised the visitors. The ninth inning happens and there's much applause and hooting and "YAY YANKEES!" and the fact that the Mets had picked up an entire half-game on the Phillies -- in May, even if they all count equally -- was of zero consolation to me. These MFYLDB were full of themselves and it was disgusting. I booed, though not loudly enough to draw attention to myself. Many hours later, it wasn't so bad that events had conspired to allow us to pick up a game on the Phils in the course of Saturday. But to live the first half of it among those with their own agenda...yeech.
  13. Fucking... Fucking... Fucking... Awesome. Except for the part where Frankie goes to hospital. But the game itself = Fucking Awesome. The other 22 wins this year together didn't make me as happy.
  14. Someday the Phillies will go back to sucking and what they do on a given evening will be of little interest. The MFYs are the MFYs. It's always a good night when the MFYs lose. And the Mets win.
  15. Thing is if a comet did hit MFYS III, it would be framed as a tragedy and we'd be the ones who were supposed to feel bad we were wishing for it. Life can be so unfair.
  16. I don't think I've ever rooted for the N.L. rival we needed to lose in Interleague to actually lose to the MFYs, not even the Braves circa '99-'00. I can enjoy the part of the outcome that a loss by the likes of the MFPs brings, but it's impossible for me to actively say "go MFYs," except straight to Hades. Hades, I tell you!
  17. Some despicable team will lose this weekend. Sadly, some despicable team will win as well.
  18. Stellar intelligence-gathering. RS appearances at Shea in the early Interleague period were quite annoying given their fans materializing in almost Cublike proportions and their team being of no help in the other Greater Good prior to 2004. Perhaps it was coincidence, but Pedro was never the same for the Mets after his return to Fenway in '06. Luis Alicea was a coach for the champion Sox of '07 and has some fond memories of his time there, per a recent 'FAN pregame interview. He said he planned on taking his fielders out to left to meet the Monster, but probably has less time penciled in for that now with Murphy moved to first.
  19. I couldn't get past the fuzzy rope.
  20. Mary Tyler Moore is not gonna make it after all.
  21. Sometimes I'm a little slow to the space bar.
  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: ="sharpie"]Top o' the seventh Twins beating the Chisox 20-0. But they couldn't beat the MFYs even once in three tries. FU, Minnesota. That's not true. They couldn't beat them once in four tries. And they were the last team to lose a playoff series to the MFYs. Useless. Utterly useless.
  23. That's called not having a guaranteed contract. Or a deep bench.
  24. I had tendinitis in one of my two typing hands when I was in my late twenties. I was day-to-day, but pecked through the pain. It took time and treatment. Same thing about a dozen years later.
  25. Rubin[/url:3i2j2o54]: Mets saying Reyes is day-to-day, that it's tendinitis, that he can't hurt it any worse, that everything's fine, return to your homes. We still need at least a backup shortstop.
