  6. If the MFPs make the playoffs by one game, it will be Thursday's game, with the MVP being Bob Davidson who ruled foul Gaby Sanchez's clearly fair double in the bottom of the ninth. Hanley Ramirez was running (not jogging) from second and the game should have been over. But Davidson simply stopped watching the path of the ball after it flew over the bag and before it landed fair on its first bounce. It was never foul except in Bob Davidson's lack of interest. Eff the Marlins, but still, they wuz robbed.

  8. Updating the Determining Third Index through the two-thirds of the season. The Mets have thus far achieved/accumulated: 28 Wins of the gonna win variety 25 Losses of the gonna lose variety 26 Wins that determine your season 29 Losses that determine your season The "one-third" or even "win 50, lose 50 no matter what you do" equation still strikes me as a myth espoused to excuse managers who don't know what else to say when their teams lose.
  9. Pelfrey's giving Ollie a run for his oh no money. Maybe Ollie could "mop up" by starting Pelfrey's turns and Pelf could come in in the second. Sure it sounds crazy... But what about this dopey theory I'll happily espouse: Pelfrey began to be less wonderful right about the time Manuel told Pelf's BFF Maine that he was completely dispensable to the team. Right around when I noticed Pelf had a new bench buddy in Dickey, I was impressed how he adapted to the realities of the business. But I wonder if there was something to the Pelfrey-Maine relationship that made Pelf a good pitcher. Then again, Maine had his best season when Guillermo Mota shared a clubhouse with him, so I'm talking out my hat.
  10. Oh crap, Pelfrey is pitching in the first inning. Crap.

  15. Ian O'Connor tweets: Derek Jeter's 4 for 4 is just a little this-is-still-my-house reminder to A-Rod on the day of No. 600 #yankees Amazing! O'Connor's Jeterlust is truly frightening. O'Connor jealously protects Jeter's turf by downgrading A-Rod's accomplishments. Of course, Rodriguez is the one who put Rodriguez on trial in a case that never ends. Last summer, when I asked Derek Jeter why he never went the boli route, he talked of the lessons he learned from a father who worked as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor. Jeter mentioned two other factors in his decision to play it clean: the potential side effects of steroid use, and the lethal hit of disclosure on a user's public image. "Eventually," Jeter said, "I think you're making a deal with the devil." Rodriguez's Faustian bargain came with the heaviest price. A-Rod was the only active baseball player to make Forbes' top 10 list of most disliked sports figures; Jeter was named baseball's most marketable player in a SportsBusiness Daily survey, and was the only baseball player named in the most recent Harris Interactive poll ranking America's favorite sports stars (Jeter finished third overall). A-Rod is free to add to his rsum and trophy case, and to attempt to become the first player to hit 800 home runs. But if the celebration appears muted, well, Rodriguez party-pooped his own bash. Too bad for the slugger. He could've touched them all. I get the sense O'Connor would like to touch 'em all, too -- all that are on Jeter.

  17. I'll bet the graphics team at Schaefer-Topps HQ in Pa., when planning for the season ahead, made preparing R.A. Dickey cards a pretty low priority. Yet you wouldn't know it from the work they put out. The '74 is a beauty. R.A. Dickey is a beauty, too.
