  1. I can't believe the Wilpons are trying to undercut your news.
  2. $37 is plenty symbolic -- we each kick it for a new beginning, just as was the case when No. 37 came in 50 years ago. That worked out well.
  3. Marlins president David Samson told MLB.com that the team was anticipating the series would be moved and invoiced the Marlins' season-ticket holders for only 78 games this season. I first read this as "inconvenienced only 78 Marlins' season ticketholders." At least that's what I wanted to believe it said.
  4. The headline implies he was once a Met star and the copy refers to him as a baseball legend. Works for me. Why doesn't Connecticut just make it official and rename itself Bobby V's?

    Viola

I wanna say Deron Johnson and I know that's 100% wrong. Deron Johnson was that guy in the 1970s. Anyway the whole thing was sorta a minor shock for me, though perhaps the Viola thing makes up for it. Brooklyn's gotta be an attraction, baby. Rich Donnelly. The man who sent Jeff Kent and J.D. Drew to their watery deaths on the same play at the plate in Game One of the 2006 NLDS.
  7. Howard Megdal checks in with dermatologists regarding back acne, and their diagnosis is Murray Chass is an ass.
  8. You can bet Charlie Samuels would have done it right.
  9. Matt Artus of Always Amazin' with a week-after report from Citi Field that is well worth the wait, here. Particularly digging the thoughts on Captain Reyes: And speaking to him, I just kept asking myself why his name NEVER comes up in the water cooler chatter about the team's captaincy. He never backed down from a question. He always sounded sincere, even when giving a canned response to a baseball question. And he laughs a great deal. He wasn't laughing at us, or necessarily at a funny question or comment. He just laughed from time to time, possibly as a means of deflecting his true feelings or as a tactic to shrug off a comment. I could see how the laughing could grow weary on the media that follows him day in and day out.
  10. Both incredibly cool in its minimalism and pretty shoddy craftsmanship if it was intended as a commemorative jersey for Jets legend Mickey Shuler. Four letters fell off!
  11. Order yours now!
  12. This is an insult to Del Unser.

Couldn't find evidence of Willie DH'ing in spring training in his coaching days (he did come out of retirement to DH at the 1976 HOF game, vs. Henry Aaron and the Brewers; no hits), but I have learned: a) he indeed managed the Mets a game in Puerto Rico in 1979, a win over the Pirates (assuming the Bucs were a draw in PR because of the Clemente factor) back on the mainland, Steve Henderson, nursing a sore hamstring back to health, got into a game at St. Petersburg...as a St. Louis Cardinal. He DH'd vs. the Phillies while a major league Met, singled and walked twice. Lou Brock, however, retained his job as Redbird left fielder.
  14. 17. Game 4, 2004 ALCS, the game in which the Red Sox saved humanity I've noticed the parameters of selection have changed within the MLB Network's fine print. They said at first that you the fans were voting to select the Top 20. Now it's framed as their expert panel and you, too. I wonder if the fan vote was considered not up to snuff. I kind of figured it wasn't "the fans" who voted the Marlins-Giants NLDS Game 4 from 2003 into the Top 20.
  15. I used chasing. Did not edit it.

But when I first saw the link (above) and the word "chasing", I imagined you as a nutty version of Michael Moore, and Mays as your GM CEO. (Whew.) I almost used "stalking" in the article, but that didn't sound quite right (or legal).
  17. And absolutely dashing in red pinstripes!

  20. 1) Thanks all. 2) My pleasure re: UMDB. What a resource. 3) Yes, a hundred-dollar bill would have been superb. 4) I may be close to tracking down the DH information. What I've been able to confirm is he managed a game in Puerto Rico in Joe Torre's absence in March 1979, as Torre flew back to St. Pete to confront yet another Met crisis (it appeared they would soon resume sucking and something had to be done about it). It would make sense that Willie might plug himself into the lineup in PR considering he was huge there in his winter league days. He was huge everywhere, actually, but particularly so there.

  23. Thanks guys. Fun two days with the only Met to wear 24 between Jim Beauchamp and Kelvin Torve. That's how Mays insists on being introduced. Really.
  24. Ceetar wrote: I only get it because my father used the phrase a lot when I was packing to go to college in Buffalo. How long did that take to quit being charming?
