  1. Bobby Valentine: Prospective partial Mets owner.
  2. Don't know about the Dutch, but he was the first Jewish player to begin his major league career with the Mets (selected from the Dodgers via the defunct first year player draft). Ike Davis is the second.
  3. Wayne and I stand corrected.
  4. Bad news coming in twos: 1965-68 Met Greg Goossen -- catcher, first baseman and Casey Stengel anecdote staple -- found dead at 65. And, no, in ten years he has no chance to be 75.
  5. Wayne Hagin reports the great Duke Snider -- Dodger legend and 1963 Met All-Star -- has passed away at age 84.
  6. The press release announcing this, uh, bounty declares the Mets are giving away "more than 300,000 items," which assumes 25,000 fans will show up to retrieve the 12 all-ages premiums (plus however many adults come for the Bud-sponsored Reyes banner). However it adds up, what an odd way to put it...unless you're trying to make a number that doesn't mean anything sound significant. I can't help but wonder if sponsors are backing away from the 'Pons.
  7. Hairston's off his intrasquad pace. He must go.
  8. Mets announced their promotional schedule, here. One event strikes me as rather gluttonous: Cap and Hot Dog Eating Contest Presented By Nathan's | First 25,000 Fans Inviting 25,000 fans to eat caps and hot dogs? Hope it's followed by Tums Day.
  9. Why is Willie Harris dining with former National teammates?
  10. The first lineups penciled in by the new managers... [u:3c19se85]The Gonzalii[/u:3c19se85] Jordan Schafer, dh Nate McLouth, cf Jason Heyward, rf Brian McCann, c Eric Hinske, lf Freddie Freeman, 1b Brooks Conrad, 2b Brandon Hicks, 3b Diory Hernandez, ss --- Jair Jurrjens, rhp [u:3c19se85]The Collinsmen[/u:3c19se85] Jose Reyes, ss Luis Castillo, 2b David Wright, 3b Angel Pagan, cf Jason Bay, lf Ike Davis, 1b Josh Thole, c Scott Hairston, dh Fernando Martinez, rf --- Jenrry Mejia, rhp Other pitchers the Mets plan to use, according to reputable sources: Manny Acosta, Pedro Beato, Taylor Buchholz, John Lujan, Armando Rodriguez
  11. Baseball! 1:10 PM! Mejia starts, PIX telecasts, FAN airs. It doesn't count, but it doesn't have to. It just has to be.
  12. No. 12 will be Game 4 2001 WS -- let's move on.
  13. HBTY MBTN! Here's to another Boswell's worth.
  14. Made quite the impression on Pedro Beato this winter while the two trained in Garden City: “I got to work out with Jose Reyes, with [2009 top pick Steve] Matz and another minor league guy, Cam [Maron], the catcher.
  15. Former Met catcher, coach and manager Yogi Berra hews to routine every spring, assisted by some guy who once gave up an All-Star home run to Lee Mazzilli. (Despite the MFY overtones, it's a nice story -- hate to say it, but I always kind of liked that fellow from Louisiana.)
  16. That film clip of the audience enthusiastically clapping.

I think I'd chip in, say, 20 dollars to make a 20-30 minute interview between Clyde Frazier and our hero happen. It would be quintessential and consequential.
  18. No doubt lavish and quite comfortable, but honestly, not all that attractive.
  19. I have to stop using such cheap voodoo dolls. This one's five years late. St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright injured his elbow Monday and is returning to St. Louis to have it examined by team doctors. General manager John Mozeliak said Wednesday that "things do not look encouraging" for the 2010 Cy Young Award runner-up, based on the initial evaluation by the training staff, and believed it is a "significant injury." He said the right-hander injured his elbow in Monday's bullpen session. I have nothing against Wainwright in the here and now despite his effectiveness on October 19, 2006. But if Yadier Molina accidentally slipped on a bat that got lodged up his ass, I wouldn't complain too vociferously.
  20. Over/Under for taking them one game at a time is 162.
  21. The property is overvalued, but it's got great intangibles.
  22. I believe I read Izzy make some remark about Franco when he took that number. "Geez, John Franco scared me a lot when I was a rookie. Between him and Jay Horwitz, I couldn't believe how ethnic New York was."
  23. Whoever's telecasting it, the World Series could use some seventh games (unless the Mets are ahead or behind 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2, obviously). Seven-Gamers, by decade, in the past 70 years: 2002, 2001 1997, 1991 1987, 1986, 1985, 1982 1979, 1975, 1973, 1972, 1971 1968, 1967, 1965, 1964, 1962, 1960 1958, 1957, 1956, 1955, 1952 1947, 1946, 1945, 1940 What's with the endangered species progression? Randomness at work? Or is everybody tired after three rounds of playoffs? FWIW, we went 18 years, from 1959 to 1977, without a six-game World Series and then had four in five years -- then went ten years without one before the next four went exactly six games.
  24. Edgy DC wrote: The 1997 series was awful. Weather and Fox kept every game lasting nine hours. That 11th inning ending was a mercy killing. It was an NBC series.
  25. Overheard a conversation yesterday in which the vocabulary was SAT-level and thought, "wow, sounds like R.A. Dickey talking."
