Nelson could hold his own 1986 celebration at his estate. He's got the scratch.

The 35th anniversary of Mickey Lolich's season in a Mets uniform obviously takes precedence.

  5. As "ETA" noted above, Friday openers in the (distant) past were not weather-protected. Plus, it's the Nationals. They come back every other week, more or less, for six months.
  6. First time I can remember the Mets not "protecting" the Home Opener either with an off day. I assume that has something to do with it being a Friday, not that it can't rain on April 8. ETA: Thinking harder (and checking), Mets skipped the off day after the Home Opener in year when they opened on a Friday, which hasn't been in a long time, but it's not unprecedented. In 1997, they were going to Home Open on a Friday but when they realized the other NY team was doing that the same day (both started the season on the West Coast), they pushed their own opener to Saturday -- and were rained on for their troubles. Thus their Home Opener became a Home Opener Doubleheader with little fanfare (saving it up for Jackie Robinson Night) and two losses. 1997 would get better, but at 3-9 it started brutally.

He said his work for ESPN will mainly consume night and weekend hours, leaving the days free to oversee Stamford's health and safety departments. ... comes off as a little naive, and kind of trivializing toward those among us-- ahem-- who work in emergency-management-y fields. Are you implying Bobby Valentine is less than superhuman?
  8. Opening Night in Miami has been penciled in for 7:10. Two previous openers the Mets played there were late-afternoon daytime affairs. I'm assuming the date (4/1) being a Friday has something to do with the scheduling...as might the host being the Marlins, who take the fun out of everything.

For the 10 Mets that will be on the team, plus Terry Collins named as a coach because of the Mets fantastic first half, being in SF means a comparatively shorter flight to the game in Arizona. It's a travesty how many deserving Mets Bruce Bochy is leaving off the N.L. team. How can he overlook Ollie's league-leading 38 holds?
  10. I expect my vocabulary to be expanded every fifth day after R.A. pitches, and not in the way I find new ways to say "FUCK!" after Ollie pitches.
  11. I realize there's no sound, but there's something wrong with the color -- Seaver's wearing red.
  12. Every question put forth from this calendar should be prefaced with an implicit, "Prior to 2010..."
  13. No problem. And considering how little we saw of him in any given season, I really loved beating Trevor Hoffman.

  15. Immense due respect to the site I have listed first among my myriad Mets bookmarks, but Mark Simon is a walking, talking UMDB unto himself, I can assure you -- and gives credit where credit is due always.
  16. I have this calendar and guessed correctly because the key to this calendar is understanding there is lengthy lead time on printing.
  17. During barren periods like winter and work stoppages, there's usually one player I rely on to infiltrate my thoughts and nudge me happily toward when the Mets will play again. These days it's Ike. I can't (or Ike'ant) wait to watch him at bat again. Expecting a good year. There's ten new inches of snow on the ground and CPF was gone all morning. Like I need to expect a bad year out of Ike Davis?
  18. Can't say I'm fond of "Hanley" as a handle either.
  19. In the offseason he was signed to that deferred payment contract of which he crows, I recall Michael Kay on ESPN howling that the Mets were ruining baseball's salary structure -- three years at $21 million for KRIS BENSON? Three weeks later, the MFYs went and cut the ribbon on the First National Bank of Carl Pavano. Clearly, that was the Mets' doing.
  20. I guess Kris Benson goes into the theoretical Hall of Fame wearing a Pirates cap.
  21. No. 19 (as I understand it -- I didn't see it at 8 and it reairs at 11) is the deciding game of the 2003 NLDS between the Giants and Marlins, the one in which Pudge Rodriguez tags J.T. Snow at the plate to end it. A fan-fucking-tastic game as I recall it.
  22. BTW, I was hoping this was a thread about shoe phones.
  23. Jeff Musselman went to Harvard. Ironically, trading Mookie Wilson to get him was far from brilliant.
  24. When he enters a game the night after having gotten through a tough inning, will be playing. In retrospect, should have been Pedro Feliciano's music.
  25. Phil Humber, a DFA instead of an A.
