  1. Press conference will dovetail with Mets' previously scheduled kids' holiday party. Cano and Diaz will double as Santa Nimmo's special helpers.
  2. Justin Dunn and Cam Maron now form a battery of Long Islanders I adopted who never made it to the Mets (save for future transactions in Dunn's case). Good luck to my Nassau County neighbor.
  3. Rickey wore 24 with Willie's blessing in 1999 and 2000. Kelvin Torve wore it in 1990, presumably by bureaucratic foulup. Nobody else has had it since Mays left his coaching position following the 1979 season.
  4. In 2014, as part of a hastily Horwitz-arranged Blogger Night group interview, I asked a DL'd Td'A about the concept of starting catchers necessarily sitting day games after night games. He thought it crazy to suggest he'd ever do that if healthy. "Catching's my art," he said. What a beautiful sentiment to express in one's rookie season.
  5. Puma of the Post reports Tabloid Cover Derby favorite Wilmer Flores will not be tendered. D'Arnaud said to be tendered.
  6. Yehuda Schwartz is either scooping everybody or jumping the gun on trade being official.
  7. Best selection of the election to date. Not a bum page in the batch.
  8. Cleon is still very much an All-Star in Mobile, per Kristie Ackert's profile in the News. https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-sports-cleon-jones-mobile-africatown-20181121-story.html

Nadir of the season in that "it can't get any better, it will only get worse" sensation that overcomes you, yet it really didn't get worse, therefore it actually got better. But that night...oof.

  12. Love for Lewin here.
  13. Recent Bill Madden column in the News said Jay Horwitz, in his new Alumni Relations role, has reached out to more than a hundred Mets of yore, stretching back to Hobie Landrith, Casey's Stengel's initial preventer of passed balls. Said the 88-year-old former catcher, "I was the very Mets player and after 56 years this is the first time anyone from the Mets ever called me." Jeff Wilpon sadly rationalized, "We weren't old enough to have enough history. But now we are and, in Jay, who's been with us so long and has seen so many players come through the organization and maintained a rapport with them, he was the absolute right guy for this job." Others on Jay's call sheet, according to Madden: Jack Fisher Jay Hook Mike Baxter Cleon Jones Doug Flynn Dave Kingman Joe Christopher Duffy Dyer Bobby Pfeil Bruce Chen Fifty-seven seasons in the books, I'm glad it's been deigned that enough history has piled up to get in touch with these guys.
  14. Cespedes was more exciting going back on the DL than most Mets were doing anything else at this stage of the season. This Yo-intensive interlude is a reminder of what a presence he's been since arriving...and what a void he leaves when he's in absentia.
  15. One player from the 1990s remains active until otherwise indicated: Bartolo Colon.
  16. Inane bullshit. Also disdain the Randazzo limbo. Mets signed off on this. I wonder if there's a connection between new GM and some ill-advised desire for a fresh sound. Not a good way to celebrate Tom Seaver's and Seth Lugo's birthday.
  17. Centerfield wrote: I find it one of the weird quirks of baseball that we ended up having both Tatis and Park as Mets. Two guys linked forever by a memorable play, both end up as Mets. Others: Robin Ventura gets pummeled by Nolan Ryan. Jesse Orosco strikes out Kevin Bass to end '86 NLCS. Left Davey Johnson making the last out in '69 off the list since he was never a Met as a player. Elio Chacon and Willie Mays went at it in 1962. Ten years later, Mays was a Met...and Elio Chacon was ten years older.
  18. June 2018 doesn't figure to be for the faint of heart.
  19. From those wonderful folks who gave you Nolan Ryan, Ryan Thompson, Ryan McGuire and Ryan Church: Ryan O'Rourke, signed by the New York Mets today. He's a lefty reliever with 54 games' experience garnered as a Twin in 2015 and 2016. Tommy John surgery occupied his time more recently.
  20. Nick Piecoro of Arizona Republic dissents from Yelich unanimity, gives 1st place MVP vote to Jake, who finished fifth overall. The antimaffei.
  21. The Last Blasphemer lays it on Randy Jones. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/mlb/sd-sp-degrom-scherzer-cy-young-vote-writer-20181115-story.html Twenty-nine other writers didn't have an automatic column this morning.

  23. Marco Rubio isn't gonna like this late entry in the Tabloid Cover Derby.
