  1. I can't recall too many Mets being gunned down at the plate this year. Are we running more intelligently? Less aggressively? Few Dave Parkers in the outfield?
  2. Making his first MLB start since 2017 today for the Orioles was Gabriel Ynoa. Four serviceable innings helped the Birds of Broxton beat the Bengals.
  3. It was overwhelmed by 1986, but Bill also had a moment of infamy in the 1974 World Series, trying to stretch a double into a triple and getting thrown out easily to kill the Dodgers' last chance. Johnny Carson joked about it in his monologue the next night, getting all-too-knowing laughs from his L.A. studio audience.
  4. Remembering him for more than what shouldn't have to define a great career and full life http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2019/05/27/a-better-first-paragraph/here.
  5. Per Jeremy Schaap, following a conversation with Jody Buckner (Bill's wife), Bill died today after battling Lewy Body Dementia.
  6. No outside confirmation, but Bobby V (his verified account) followed with a couple of pictures of himself and his old Dodgers teammate. OE: It's official. Bill Buckner has died at 69.
  7. Just randomly tuned to O's-Tigers in time to hear Keon Broxton drop a ball in center for Baltimore.
  8. There used to be a Met guy right here who was right here this weekend, as is explored in this Free Press "he was a Met" https://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2019/05/26/detroit-tigers-ron-gardenhire-new-york-mets/1247816001/profile of Tigers skipper Ron Gardenhire.
  9. The Seavers are indeed beautiful, but Jock rocks.
  10. Gibson's suffering from Parkinson's.
  11. Tigers so impressed by the Mets they've signed one of their old relievers, Carlos Torres, to a minor league deal.
  12. Sewald and Peterson pass through waivers, stay at Syracuse.
  13. Once in a while human fallibility calling balls and strikes is a good thing.
  14. ”What's the score?” "Mets are down by two." “What else is new?” —Conversation between Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and the guard at the stage door of the 46th Street Theatre in the summer of 1975 during the original run of Chicago, portrayed in Episode 7 (“Nowadays”) of Fosse/Verdon, May 21, 2019
  15. Hech A Sketch is an underrated fun thing to have.
  16. John Oliver, in a Mets cap, on the telecast telling Gelbs no way either he or his son could ever be a MFY fan (Mets fan since arriving from UK in 2006).
  17. Smith a little out of practice at thinking through what to do with purposely dropped bunts.
  18. I'm guessing BVG is BVW, and the Lowrie and Familia signings, along with the trade with Seattle, can be said to have burned Van Wagenen.
  19. Rajai and out...unless nobody grabs him and he catches a ride to Syracuse, which seems quite possible.
  20. Sic transit Rajai — Davis DFA'd for Conforto's return. Paging Uber Driver Jason...
  21. Nice way to forget that irritating Friday night loss. (What irritating Friday night loss?)
  22. Deep into the significance of Gomez and Vargas playing together for the first time since 2007, I decided this was a game not starting until 7:10 PM. I was sitting here for 40 minutes, awake and doing other things, oblivious to a Met game taking place. I don't think that's happened since 2003.
  23. It's cool. That was my next calculation anyway. Reyes and Wright first played together on July 21, 2004, and last played together on September 29, 2018; 2,335 regular-season Mets games transpired in between. Seaver and Jorgensen first played together on September 14, 1968, and last played together (on the field at the same time) on May 11, 1983; 2,244 regular-season Mets games transpired in between. Seaver and Jorgensen were in the same game for the last time, though not on the field at the same time, on June 7, 1983, making the gap between first and last 2,267 regular-season Mets games if you choose to view it through that prism.
  24. I wasn't looking at the gap between first and last games together, rather the gap between appearances together. Hodges and Staub played together on September 28, 1975, and next on April 19, 1981. That's about 820 games. As for longest stretch between first and last games together (as measured in regular-season Mets games), it's likely Reyes/Wright, with Seaver/Jorgensen close behind. Though the years are similar (slightly past middle of 2004 to end of 2018 vs. late 1968 to June 1983), Jose and David might have the edge because of no games lost to strike or even rain.
