  1. in by opinion the only people not in the hall who belong there are Pete Rose and Bert Blyleven
  2. i believe that Benitez had about the same overall talent level as Wagner, BUT i think Benitez had the problem of relying solely on his fastball in big spots and thats what got him in trouble in the clutch when he seemed to be better in low-pressre spots.
  3. Nady hurts lefties himself so that seems like a redundant move to me.
  4. i dont see any problem with barring guys forever. their statistics don't change after they don't get in the first few times and the further you get from the time they played the less and less accurate any other information about them will be. finally, if you cant do away with the veteran committee, at least stop changing the rules. let them meet once every 4 years, let them only elect one player and one non-player at any given meeting, and let that be the end of it. it seems to me that every time nobody gets in for a few years they rush to find a way to force feed someone in.
  5. just dont throw your fastball down the middle 10 straight times whenever you're in trouble and you'll be fine. i always thought that was Benitez's problem, he had 2 or 3 good pitches but when he got into a "clutch" situation he didn't believe in anything but his heater, hitters eventually catch up to fastballs when they know that its coming.
  6. the only thing this reeks of to me is another attempt to put of those "poor oppressed negro leaguers" into the hall of fame. it is time to do away with the veterans committee as a whole. there was a time when it served the useful purpose of inducting those who never had the chance at induction before the HOF existed, that time is long past give the writers, not the committee, one last shot at everyone who hasn't been inducted (an up or down shot requiring 75%, not "pick 10") and then close the process of retroactive induction once and for all, if someone wasn't good enough to get in in their frst 20 tries (or 20 passes of the veterans committee, or whatever else) then they don't belong in the hall of fame!
  7. ...
  8. i thought that you can't copy/paste insider articles, or is there a way around that?
  9. Ryan's stats, besides k/9, just dont excite me. if we're going outside the organization it should be Wagner, but at what price? do we really want to go 4 years on him at his age?
  10. good deal for the Red Sox to get Beckett into their rotation and maybe Lowell will show he's got something left. does this affect the Marlins attempts to trade Delgado, Castillo, etc.?
  11. i'd do Heilman and Matsui for Castillo and a decent prospect (think Bannister level)
  12. ]Finally, for the 6' 6" 228 lb. addiction-recovering athlete in your life, here's a suit tailor-made for Straw. that would have to fit me at 6'5" 220 lb. too bad its so ugly.
  13. was Sojo ever good? i'm in class without time to check numbers... it would be scary if he lost it the way Baerga did.
  14. i didnt realize he was only 30 and his that his OBP was so good 3 straight years, i guess i'm on the Castillo bandwagon, lets get him....butnot if it stops us from getting Delgado.
  15. i'd sooner pass on molina AND hernandez and make do with what we have. while both are upgrades to Castro they will probably receive too much money to make them worth bringing here.
  16. the mets shouldnt take that salary off the marlins hands and possibly give them a way to keep delgado.
  17. i have no problem with a 35 year old...but i am wary about committing for ages 36, 37, and maybe 38 now.
  18. the way the '06 roster is shaping up a guy like him almost makes sense, not that i'd want one anyway but at least its justifiable now...
  19. the at bats given to gerald williams last year are the most puzzling thing in a long time. bench players should be good players, failing that they should be young with at least the potential to be good. Williams was neither and with 2 true centerfielders already on the team i saw no need to keep him around. lets hope the mets have a "smarter" roster this year.
  20. its going to attack! ahhhhhhh
  21. considering the mets history with prospects, particularly pitchers, i'd never say a pitching prospect isn't available. as for hitters it would take a guy like Wright for me to say "we won't deal him at all"
  22. i believe it is very unlikely that Floyd puts up numbers like that again. but he is affordable and good when healthy so i'm not in any hurry to jettison him. if theres an offer out there for an outfielder who is as good a hitter but less injury-prone then go ahead and take it, but don't be so quick to try and get rid of him otherwise. as for glavine his age alone suggests he will decline, i wouldn't trade him in the offseason though. if at some point this coming season we can trade him to fill an in-season need, and we believe that Petit is ready and wish to clear a spot, then maybe it becomes time to deal him then.
  23. Edgy DC wrote: Personally, I have little concern over whether Delgado sits or stands. as long as he stands at the plate 600 or so times.
  24. ]Then it should be cheap to pick him up in a trade and bat him leadoff. hahaha....a great idea, but i doubt willie would lead a guy off for having an amazing OBP, that would make too much sense. as for 3 years, $30 million thats probably about right, but if its gonna take a 4th year and more money to trump the yankees i'm not so sure its worthwhile.
