  1. you set this one and the last one up incorrectly, it says pick three but you can only pick one
  2. I refuse to watch Joe Morgan, sorry ESPN
  3. The Potomac's easy Not if you're George McClellan. Impressive story and the guy was lucky to miss the snow. Temperature wise I'd rather try it now than in the summer, the 40's don't feel cold when you're sweating.
  4. FJM quit writing awhile ago, so Joe can at least say he outlasted them. I really hope this is true, I'd tune in for Bobby Valentine on Sunday nights even if the Mets weren't playing. Do you hear that ESPN executives? I WILL TUNE IN FOR BOBBY VALENTINE this message is directed to any ESPN-controlled spiders.
  5. damn, i got beat to the Julio Franco joke my a matter of seconds
  6. i don't know any of those names, I guess they want to go young? i'd rather an older Captain America, like Kevin Sorbo!
  7. I think we should also try using the free agent blind bidding for waivers, which is a new Yahoo feature this year, instead of the generic "first come first served" method. i like it. PS What happens when Carl Crawford gets traded to an NL team in mid-July and we all go all-in bidding for him? whoever prudently saved their FA budget gets him. or if there is a "tie" (two max bids) it goes to the player lower in the standings. as for the innings limit, i think it should be high enough that even with the best innings eaters in the league you dont hit it, but you can just drop and replace starters 4 times a week. 1450 is fine since we have 3 dedicated reliever slots. ps- this is shaping up to be awesome instead of just another yahoo standard/mixed/public league that anyone can go join on their own anyway, way to go fman
  8. at least up the bench size from 3 to 5, this makes having the next useful player less a matter of being the first to click the waiver wire when player X gets named a starter and more a matter of planning.
  9. booo dont water it down, whats wrong with having to use part-time players??
  10. I'd break camp with Blanco as my catcher, Barajas as the backup, and Coste on the team only if he "wins" a ph slot over guys like Carter. Thole as the AAA starter, Santos either starting at AA or backing up Thole and being ready incase of injury.
  11. JCL- you'll have the chance to make your own picks at draft time... yahoo's rankings are generally decent if you take into account that they are 1) heavily skewed toward last year's numbers and 2) don't get altered much to include injuries and expected playing time in the spring...so just use common sense to exclude guys that yahoo likes but you know are hurt or not starting. as far as stats/positions you need to fill out the roster...some people would rather take the best player (lets say Pujols) while others would rather take Hanley Ramirez because of position scarcity, which is the the idea that Pujols + a crap SS later on won't be as good as Ramirez + a crap 1B, because the 10th best 1B will put up much better roto numbers than the 10th best SS. theres no right answer.
  12. Ken Burns announced plans for a "10th Inning" addition to his aforementioned Baseball documentary. The new chapter will cover 1994-2008 and will run for about four hours. Among the emphasized topics are Barry Bonds, the 1994 strike, the steroid scandal, Japanese import Major Leaguers, the sport's reaction to 9/11 and the long awaited crowning of the Red Sox as WS champs. The 10th Inning is expected to premiere on PBS this October Glossing over the Yankees mini-dynasty would be awesome.
  13. smg58 wrote: I have a rules question: what happens if there's a trade between leagues? gotta check the yahoo default, leagues go different ways on this...in some leagues you lose him, in some you keep him, in others you keep him but cant trade him, and in still others you get first crack at the guy he was traded for (multiplayer trades the guy with the highest priced or highest pick player leaving gets first choice of the guys coming back) reagardless of waiver priority. any of these rules are fine by me, but make sure we know what we are doing before the draft.
  14. I'm in, and not planning to start up the non-NL only league (but will join if someone else really wants a combined league)
  15. count me in, i always get fed up with mixed leagues because they are way too shallow.
  16. I've changed my vote from Delgado to Free Agent. lets give Blalock a shot.
  17. Centerfield wrote: Bedard to the M's. $1.5 million, reportedly. Yes, that's $500,000.00 less than Alex Cora for those keeping score at home. (Yes, I'm sure that there are incentives and the deal is not official yet, I'm just saying...) now theres a guy i feel the Mets let slip at that price tag because i wouldn't have blinked if Wilpon paid double
  18. yes, castillo is a sunk cost, but so is every other contract you've signed (except to the extent that you can trade a guy and not eat the contract, but i'd think if the mets could have done that at any point over the last two years it would be done already.) Hudson represents an additional cost, one the Mets may not feel worth taking on considering he is only marginally better offensively than the guy who got on base 39% of the time last year. maybe the Mets dont buy that there is a large, gaping defensive difference between them. maybe they know something we dont (like why Hudson settled for peanuts last year and is likely to again this year relative to his numbers) edit- lwfs with news of the signing as i'm posting. 5 million? thats alot to pay a guy to fill a position that you've already got filled. i'd have liked to sign him but i am not angry the mets passed. if castillo sucks this year maybe the twins will suck too and hudson will be available in july for a garbage "prospect" and the promise to eat his remaining 2.5 million
  19. too much to respond to in this thread alone today so i'll make a few scattered points... Another reason why he [Castillo] should have been jettisoned is that it would have been a sign that the Mets are committed to once again changing the culture of the clubhouse, which lets be honest really does need a good shake up. Ala what happened in heading into 2005 when Martinez and Beltran were brought in. 2004: 71-91, 2005: 83-79 2009: 70-92, 2010:?? "clubhouse culture" is code for "wins on the field" and the only "shaking up" it needs is winning more ball games, which takes baseball talent not charisma. -to whoever said the Mets have a "small market mentality", find me a small market team that signed Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, Carlos Beltran, Johan Santana, Jason Bay etc. -Steve lets have a reality check here about winning only 70 games again. even if the mets had brought back the same exact roster, they shouldnt be expected to suffer the same freakish avalanche of injuries again. the top 10 Mets in plate appearences last year: Wright, Castillo, Muprhy, Tatis, Pagan, Beltran, Sheffield, Francoeur, Cora, Santos. the top 3 had 500+ and the next guy had 379. to use the phillies for quick comparison they had 7 guys top 500. so give 500+ this year to Wright, Bay, Beltran (barely), Castillo, Reyes, and whichever two you think will be the best out of Pagan/Francoeur/Murphy and see who wins the division. the phillies had 6 guys get to the plate more often than David Wright, our "leader" at 618.
  20. for $80 a seat you can get tickets to five Cyclones games, 4 of which will have fireworks, with the "Skyrocket" package.
  21. considering that they have the option for 2011 theres no reason to make hasty decisions. i wouldnt do anything until you are sure he's healthy. after that, start talking contract, but theres no reason to get aggressive until at least NEXT offseason. exercise the option when it comes time, and keep negotiating. i wonder though if reyes might be signable for less now than he will be later given the injury. he might not want to give away all his best free agent years right now, but what if the mets agreed to two years (2011 and 2012) at something like 12 million a year? this amounts to 13 for 2012 from reyes' perspective because he'd otherwise be re-upped for 11, and it gives him some security at a time where he's coming off a major injury while only sacrificing one more year before hitting the market (or getting a big deal from the mets)
  22. Noah Lowry? wow. If he's really looking healthy why not?
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: A one-year contract? That means we'll probably be having this same discussion next year. just like we did last year. fine with me that another useful plyer will again be available next year, more options are good.
